when growing up me and my dad and my brother played a game at Home Depot called “Don’t let me see you while I shop.” The rules were that I had to follow my dad around the huge Home Depot but be out of sight the whole time. This game was extremely fun for me for some reason (we also called it the “Super Spy game”) and extremely useful for my dad.

Anyway, later on I realized I could just wonder off and not necessarily follow him around and still win. This is the story of how I used to go directly into the Home Depot lights section and just immediately dissociate like I entered a fairy wonder land for hours on end.

These are all from Reading is Fundamental 7.21 written by Ben Edlund who also wrote the Ghostfacers 3.13 episode which had the “gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day” ending way back in 2008

For anyone thinking that the title of 7.21 sounds like a RuPaul catch phrase, you should know that the episode aired in 2012 when Drag Race was only 3 years old and still an underground sensation for queer audiences who assumed it’d never win an Emmy. But the “Reading is fundamental” line had already been introduced onto the show before Edlund wrote this episode. So it’s entirely possible that the episode title was a nod to queer subculture that the CW execs wouldn’t know about at the time

you know what NO i will not shut up about ben edlund because he knew!!! like you know he took ONE look at dean and cas on screen together probably in that fucking kitchen scene in 4x02 and somehow just KNEW. like he immediately caught onto the potential before anyone else did!! he was giving us destiel IN SEASON FOUR!!! metatron. made hating cas his personality. technically he was a big bad but more technically his becoming god plot was but the board on which he hung the strings of bullying cas. you love to see it.

naomi. dared to be the first to ask the hard hitting questions like “what if we stuck needles in castiel’s brain? do you think that would make him less annoying?”

ishim. he had FLAIR and PANACHE and was smug about it. he stole cas’s phone and used up all his power and then was like you dumbfuck i stole your phone and used up all your power. also i’m going to kill dean because you have awful taste.

hester. she was only there for one ep but by GOD did she give it her all when she showed up to yell about how ruined cas was.

raphael. he hated cas but in a very surface level distaste way. cas was a bump in the road and not something he made mean speeches about.

One of the reasons why I love bi!dean is because the story wasn’t about him being bi. He was just another - vessel, brother, hunter, hero, friend - doing his best to fight his demons, overcome his trauma and help others. He just happened to love guys and girls and one angel. It was natural.

honestly the degree to which I get so much more okay with people saying things in fandom when it’s stated as a preference rather than incontrovertible fact is kind of mind-blowing even to me

per that last post about headcanons it’s like. establishing your first principle that “yes this contradicts canon but I’ve decided to ignore that” is going to make me feel so much less inclined to get bitchy about something that feels like a willful misreading of the text

like, yes! this can be sort of frustrating and feel like you’re diluting yourself but honestly I think it goes a long way sometimes to just acknowledge that you’re having a specific type of conversation/approach rather than posing something as a universal truth presumed to be accepted without question

it’s also so much more refreshing and also important in creating a healthy fandom environment when people don’t pretend they are “fixing” the source material by coming up with reasons why their headcanons are superior to the canon either on a storytelling or a political level. headcanons don’t need to justify their existence by being either canon-compliant or better than canon, there is value in just being fun to the people coming up with them.
