Actually I love how by devaluing Simon's life the COI and Ava accidentally end up implying the mission isn't worth much to them, end up treating the mission as somehow less important than punishing Simon.

That's the thing. If Simon's main measurement of How Much Is This Worth is the fact the COI is willing to risk his life for it, and they reinforce over and over again how little he is worth to them, then that doesn't say much as to the value of the mission to them. The mission even becomes incidental to Simon deserving this, like he'd be thrown down there into the blood even without the benefit. Which is further reinforced by how the lack of resources they put into protecting Simon also reduces his chance of success--it comes off as if Simon dying horribly is more important than increasing the mission's chance of success. By mixing in the justifications of punishment and acting on it, it undermines the importance of the mission itself.

It's only when Ava admits that Simon doesn't deserve this, that it's wrong and unjust but they still have to do it does the fact it's more than him click. Because Simon's been operating under the assumption the mission isn't worth much because the COI is only willing to kill a nameless convict they all hate for it and obviously Simon values his own life more than they do. Why should he give up something so valuable to him for something that the COI as declared over and over again is not worth much at all?

But when Ava admits that they're not willing to kill him because he's a nameless convict but because it's worth more than a person, the importance of the mission is no longer greater than just some nameless convict--it's greater than an actual human life, one Ava clearly, genuinely wants to save but is still less than the mission. AND THEN! She demonstrates this by losing her own life. The mission isn't just worth more than a disposable nameless convict who isn't worth much at all. It is worth more than Captain Ava's life is to herself, and so it is worth more than Simon not because he is worth so little but because it is worth so much.

Obviously at this point Simon is screwed either way. But that fight at the end? He could've given up, or spitefully refused because the deal was broken. The whole thing was certainly unpleasant. But by the end Simon knows how much the mission is worth and he wouldn't have if Ava hadn't acknowledged his humanity or sacrificed herself. If he still thought the worth of it capped out at one nameless convict no one cared about. It's worth more than Simon, it's worth more than Ava, it's more than worth that final, clawing fight.
