I'm going to be a bit meta right now (and if you are enjoying ashes to crown, scroll past), but I think Ashes to Crown is probably the best example of why the 大女主 ("big female lead") genre feels so empty these days.

Because it's so vibe based. The scriptwriting feels catered to the fans of the FL who wants to see their jiejie playing Mary Sue-perfect type characters with Iron Man level plot armor dramatically staring at the camera in slow mo than ... actual plotting. What have the character done to actually warrant the title? Nothing.

Like the epitome of the big female lead drama is legend of zhen huan and Minglan. But what's so special about those 2 dramas are that they let their leads fail. Zhen Huan falls, multiple times. Minglan had to work through many layers of childhood trauma. Neither gave them Boss Level fighting abilities.

So yes, maybe the current way they're filming allows fans to make cuts on Douyin, but it's just empty.

(And sure, some people are like, why can't women have their wish fulfillment? I'm not saying you can't, but also, I don't think it's too much to want actual substance in writing.)

I think the one good recent example is Yang Mi in This Thriving Land which was very centered on her character and made her real and the world real and any victories hard earned. But that is prestige and I think that’s a different beast perhaps.

if we’re talking wish fulfillment, i personally find the idea of a flawed/struggling/human character coming out on top to be way more fulfilling than a perfect one winning it all. if all these girls are self-inserting isn’t that a lot of pressure? or are they so incapable of dealing with stress that they need frictionless stories?

Seriously - my idea of a relaxing fictional moment is watching a setting and characters that are very far removed from my own life in every way (and not anything I want to be in the middle of, either) because it's a great break from my current stuff.

I mean, if I have a fantasy for me, it's to have a lovely family vacation somewhere super pleasant and unfamiliar, to sleep in and run around with my family and drink a lot of fancy coffee drinks. (Or if we are talking deepest craziest fantasy, it's to have people I have loved and lost be alive and with me again, but that is too depressing for this post so...) Nothing involves being a bland boss bitch with a man of thin character and thick dick at my beck and call.

Looks like state of the "Strong Female Character™️" which I’ve had an issue with for 10+ years keeps circling down the drain. It’s why as a teen I would dnf YA books. The way power fantasies are written for women and girls is rarely good nor exciting even in plot (even if it’s badly written).

It’s why I get so excited for female loser characters. At least there’s texture with that, at least they fail, they cry, they struggle, they wrestle in mud scrambling for a knife, they run away and hide. They often never win, but when they do my god the euphoria is like nothing else.

Watching Pursuit of Jade, gorgeous drama but I’m ultimately not impressed. Did Linghe’s looks make everyone lose their senses cause if it were any other actor in the role, no one would be as forgiving about this drama…

The more Linghe dramas I watch and the more it solidifies to me that he peaked with Kunning.

The reason all those Chinese production companies are experimenting with AI actors is because giant fandoms do not seem to give a hoot about story, acting or really anything except how perfect their fave looks and how much screen time they have. With that mindset, what can be more perfect than AI nonsense with no other actors to compete with the chosen one and the story quality is immaterial.

Very unpopular fandom opinion n3:

Kdramas were better prior to 2017 and no good after 2024 and it’s part western streaming and part Puritan fandoms.

Number 3a:

The reason people view fandom as morality is because it’s easier to try to achieve virtues thru entertainment choice than actually do something in real life.

at this point it's clear that this guy is the intended "protagonist" of this show. don't even bother being invested in the leads because they're side characters actually! 5 minutes of screentime together during an episode ABOUT THEIR WEDDING. they had them talk about him ONE MINUTE AFTER CONSUMMATING THEIR MARRIAGE. how about a little romantic banter between the leads who are *checks notes* THE LEADS and *checks notes again* the central romantic pairing? if not a few sweet nothings then at least round 2, writers? the rest of the ep was about this one being a little bitch, as per usual. i'm sick of him, truly. is the actor a nepo baby to end all nepo babies? is he blackmailing the production company boss? does the scriptwriter owe him a life debt? what's going on???????

Got some Weibo goss from a friend, withstanding Winwin is an idol, apparently quite frequently now a lot of actors management try to strong arm the production team into giving more screentime for their actors especially more favourable storylines.

I can see this being the case because idol or influencers actors are unlikely to get main roles in great/good dramas from the jump (if they want main roles it’ll be in lower quality dramas). However, they’re also impatient to do the grind and work their way up the ladder slowly so I guess the next best thing is to get second leads in great dramas but push for maximised screentime regardless of the detriment to quality of the story.
