Cycle of Delusions

I’m currently the FP of a someone who has all of the traits of either BPD or NPD.

I asked the suspected pwNPD/BPD if they can simply take accountability for their part in an issue and it’s been such a struggle for them to do so that their reaction has been a full scale dramatic melt down. They have done everything from blaming me for ruining their night to claiming they are having breathing issues and chest pains to breaking up with me …again (I’ve lost count at this point at how many times they have done this).

In response to her meltdown, I’ve made her tea and served her that with chocolate.

What is the thing I wanted her to take accountability for?

Unresolved baggage that’s impacting our relationship. To simply admit that she has it and that’s it’s happening. It’s a blatant fact.

And it’s so difficult for her to admit it that she’s going into full blown panic.

It’s really bewildering to me and also exhausting to deal with. Any sane human being would be able to clearly see that this is obviously the case and vouch for the more peaceful option in the relationship, which is to simply admit the reality as a means to validate their partners observation and create a pathway to healing.

Instead, she chooses to gaslight and argue.

I know that I should probably just leave. This cycle of her delusions seem never ending.

What is holding me back?

Wait okay first of all you admit you don’t know if she has bpd or npd (and she could even have neither and the symptoms are coming from something else) and you tag it as “bpd problems” (a tag where pwbpd usually vent to my knowledge) and “npd abuse” as if it would be worse if she had npd (don’t know if that’s how you mean it but that’s how it comes off) and talk about how a sane person would react while saying that you’re sure she is mentally ill? Also, having delusions and being in denial of trauma and gaslighting aren’t the same thing and lumping them together isn’t helpful. You need to understand that you are talking about mental illness in pretty demeaning ways and putting it where mentally ill people will be guaranteed to see it which isn’t just a small problem that inconveniences us but a part of the larger societal oppression of mentally ill people (sanism, a subtype of ableism), thanks in advance for understanding

But anyway yeah she needs to work on herself before she is ready to be in intimate relationships because her problems are obviously affecting you too, and for why you’re staying maybe you’re codependent or something or also have abandonment anxiety or just feel like the good times make up for it which they don’t in reality but that is one of the most common experiences of abuse, you’re not wrong or bad for being stuck in abuse there are just explanations behind it. It just means that you also need to work on yourself before you’re ready to enter healthy intimate relationships and that’s fine I think almost everyone should be doing that it’s just that a lot of people don’t and that’s the norm

You can’t really do anything to change her or control the situation, the only thing you have control over is yourself and that can feel pretty terrifying to accept but it’s the truth. You are right that you should leave, but that can be really hard so you need to be prepared for how it will feel and have some coping mechanisms and tools to help you. Things I recommend is writing a detailed list of reasons you’re leaving and then when you forget why you left you read through it, or tell a friend why you’re leaving so they can talk you out of going back to her. Also when you need/miss the positive things she brought to your life, find those positive things somewhere else like asking a friend for reassurance or cuddling with a pet or writing it down in a fictional story or anything that helps soothe you enough that you don’t go back. You can imagine if your best friend was in your situation, what would you say to them to help them not go back? You can put her notifications on silent so if she starts texting you again you won’t notice it. You can go to therapy and get help for codependency if you think you are that. Practicing setting boundaries not only in that relationship but in all parts of life that aren’t too porous or too rigid, it’ll give you more ability to set boundaries with her too. Having a physical hobby that you can do, like art or knitting or climbing or anything else, so you can get busy instead of going back. Learning how to get through anxiety attacks if you start getting them after you leave. Learning how to look for green and red flags, and how to not feel bored in healthy relationships is good too

Hope you’ll get out of that situation! It’s okay to hurt people’s feelings for your own safety and yes you are unsafe in an emotionally abusive relationship where you can’t solve problems so no need to question that part, safety isn’t only about physical safety it’s about mental safety too <3

As someone who was in an EXTREMELY emotionally abusive friendship (To the point I wonder whether it caused my amnesia to worse to full on amnesiac barriers) yes I agree with all of this, I also started going and making more friends which has also helped a lot in the long run
