If you heard of tumblr's unusable search function, may I present to you my ranking of ✨️epigraphic databases✨️

- EPIGRAPHIC DATABASES/COLLECTIONS, LATIN EDITION - MOST TO LEAST SEARCHABLE (personal, not professional opinion) -

Epigraphic Database Heidelberg - feels like a divine honour, sort by province, year, preservation, whatever your soul desires. Will show you a map, date, find date(!), literature, and explain the inscription to you like you're 5 yo. And the keyword search actually works! 10/10

Epigraphy Database Clauss/Slaby - good searchability by keyword and place, clear layout, maps and references to other ID numbers. Has most of what you need, though sometimes may underdeliver. 9/10

Epigraphic Database Roma - my personal problematic favourite. Very extensive, a lot of contextual information, bibliography, sometimes pictures and links to connected inscriptions. Do learn your latin though, because obviously that's the best langauge to describe ancient inscriptions, no? Great if you know the ID number. Keyword function offers false promises, though - it may give you what you want, or may not. It's a lottery. 7/10

CIL - depends on which CIL you're researching; lovely for CIL VI, absolute headache for CIL IV. You'll have to click through many pages but if you search for a particular ID number, it's easy to reference. Clear layout and links to EDCS. Doesn't seem to have a keyword search which is disappointing. 6/10

Arachne CIL Open Access - the gruelling alternative when CIL online database doesn't deliver. Deserves appreciation for publishing a good portion of the og CIL (book format) scans. I hope you have patience though, because you will be clicking through 1700 pages just to find one inscription. And when you do, there is a 50/50 chance no other information was recorded. Search function died and hasn't recovered. Bonus points for division into digital sections - at least that provides some navigation. 4/10

Inscriptiones Latinae Selectae - only in book format, but at least in public domain. Another test of patience, though shorter. No search function, everything is manual. Saves itself by division in chapters. Good luck. 3/10
