have you thought about ed and stede waking up wrapped in each others arms sighing softly and pressing kisses to foreheads and chests today??? no. well now you have. đ
thinking about how so much of edâs self loathing is wrapped up in the idea that heâs inherently dangerous and that people who are close to him will not be safe
thinking about how edâs whole life has involved watching people he loves getting hurt and feeling powerless to help them
thinking about how one of the first things to happen to him post-gravy basket is meeting the bunny and telling it that itâs his best friend and itâll always be safe only for it to immediately get killed in front of him
thinking about how that probably reminded him of the multiple occasions that he almost had to watch stede get killed in front of him
âwe werenât meant to be able to see this many opinionsâ
âwe werenât meant to know what everybody thinks about everythingâ
âwe werenât meant to have the news and everyoneâs takes on it available 24/7â
thatâs all 100% true and valid and my brain is forever damaged bc of it but also i firmly believe we WERE meant to have access to this many cat videos. i can beam footage of kittens that i otherwise would never have met into my eyeballs at any time of the day or night and that can only be a good thing
For your birthday fic requests, something where Ed takes care of Stede when Stede is either sick or injured and Stede gets emotional for having all of this love poured over him when he's had to fend for himself in the past.
So sweet!! Forcing Stede to accept comfort >>>>>
--
âYou know you really donât have to do this, right?â
Ed just laughed, like it was some big joke, tossing a comment over his shoulder about running to get more pillows as he dashed off.
More pillows were not going to help.
Stede sighed, slumping back against the bedsheets. This whole mess was his fault in the first place! Heâd insisted on carrying the new rolls of wallpaper in all in one trip, and heâd had a spectacular fall when all he was carrying prevented him from seeing the porch steps. Now, his ankle was sprained, swollen black and blue and warm to the touch and far too painful to stand on.
And Ed wasâŠbeing far too good a sport about it, honestly. He was being a suspiciously good sport about it.
âHere we go,â Ed said cheerfully, rushing back in with another pillow so he could prop Stedeâs foot up. That done, he leaned back, appraising the scene.
It was absolutely pathetic, Stede thought. He was such a baby that Ed had wrapped him up in a quilt, brought him a tray carefully laden with a variety of juices in shot glasses (for fun, Ed said) and light snacks like little fish sandwiches, and brought a stack of books to the nightstand so Stede wouldnât have to get up to grab something to read.
âYeah,â Ed said thoughtfully, âthatâll do, I think. What do you want for lunch?â
Stede sighed deeply. âWhatever youâre making is fine. Iâll eat anything.â
âNuh-uh, Bonnet, thatâs not what I asked,â Ed said, sitting at his bedside, taking Stedeâs hand immediately to brush a sweet kiss over his knuckles. âI know youâll eat anything. I asked what you wanted.â
âEd.â Stede allowed a little bit of his annoyance to slip into his tone, and Edâs smile started to drop. âYou really donât have to do this. I donât think itâs funny.â
âFunny,â Ed repeated, like he really had no idea what Stede was talking about.
âYes,â Stede snapped, pulling his hand out of Edâs. âI donât think itâs funny for you to act like Iâm a big baby. I know Iâm not as tough as some, but thereâs no need to be mean about it.â
He realized heâd made a major miscalculation when Edâs lip wobbled.
âRight,â Ed mumbled, getting up so quickly it made the bed creak. âSorry. Call if you need me. Bye.â
With that, Ed practically ran out of the room before Stede could even process the whole thing.
âOh, fuck,â Stede whispered, letting his head rest back against the headboard. Heâd fucked up. Despite what Stedeâs instinct had taught him to believe, Ed really hadnât just been fussing over him to make fun of him for being soft and weak. Heâd done it because heâŠwanted to.
That felt even worse, honestly.
âHey, Ed?â Stede called, his own voice coming out a bit wobbly.
Edâs voice had the pinched, overly-casual quality it always got when he was trying very hard to make sure Stede couldnât tell heâd been crying. âWhatâs up, babe? Comfy?â
âEd, can you come back in here, please?â
When Ed popped his head in, he was very pointedly looking at the floor instead of at Stede. âIâm sorry,â he repeated. âIf it was too much.â
âYouâve done nothing wrong,â Stede promised him, holding out his hand, relieved when Ed took it immediately. âI was justâŠI think you scared me.â
âYeah?â Ed sat down, careful not to jostle Stedeâs foot, his eyes so big and wide and full of love, Stede barely knew what to do with it.
âI didnât know,â Stede admitted, trying to shrug like it hardly mattered. âI didnât know anyone could love me this much and mean it.â
Edâs mouth worked, for just a second, and then he was leaning down for a careful, gentle kiss. âYou fuckinâ lunatic,â he whispered against Stedeâs lips. âOf course I mean it. I want to take care of you!â
âReally,â Stede confirmed.
âReally,â Ed said emphatically.
When Stede had been sick or injured in the past, heâd been treated like an inconvenience. His father had mocked him for being weak, Mary had put up with him as well as she could but was irritated by his neediness. Heâd learned that fending for himself was easier. And here Ed was, who just wanted to take care of him because he loved him.
How lovely. How wonderful. Stedeâs eyes welled with happy tears, and he laughed, delighted when Ed laughed back.
âIn that caseâŠâ Stede wriggled on the sheets, getting himself comfortable. âI could really use another blanket. And a straw for my juice.â
âRight away, sir,â Ed laughed, snapping him a mock salute.
âAnd another cold compress for my ankle,â Stede added.
âOh, great,â Ed pretended to grumble, getting one last kiss in before he headed out. âIâve created a monster.â
Stede smiled at the door for a while after Ed had left.
