I’ve seen a few posts recently saying they find the prevalence of Shen jiu in the fandom to be annoying, and correctly identifying how underexplored the women are in comparison. So here is my totally unasked for opinion.

Shen jiu is a static character. Not only narratively, but as a whole. He is someone who remained set in his ways, who refused change and growth at every opportunity. Yue Qingyuan, like it or not, enables this staticness. He creates a situation where Shen jiu can forever work himself into a rut without change-shielding his abusive actions and never pushing him to be better.

With such a character who is completely unmoving, it is expected for a fandom to latch onto and explore what is left undone. And I say undone not unsaid because we are not really given hints as to what Shen jiu would be like if he wasn’t a static character. heres where I think the issue lies. This is a very old fandom and Shen jiu has been kind of explored to death. To the point that we all at least subconsciously hold a bias about what his canon character is like due to the amount of fanon around him. There are widely accepted traits to his character that never existed before they were assigned to him. There is a guidebook now of how you write Shen jiu and anuthing else is considered mischaracterization. This guidebook is based heavily on his popular fanon.

all this to say: as a fandom we no longer view Shen jiu as a sort of “what if” in the same way we once did. And this is not to say anything negative about anyone who enjoys fanon shen jiu, I do too, but his fanon had totally eclipsed any unique ways to explore his character. You read scum villain, aee Shen jiu, go “he’s so tragic I wonder how things could have been different” and then the fandom provides you with a nearly uniform answer. An answer I love but one that also makes it frustrating to make anything unique or subversive out of his character. Not to mention his fanon version almost always has his hard edges sanded to make him more palatable. Nearly everything we actually know about this guy is him abusing a child with the intent to kill. He is not mean and rude in a palatable lovable way. He is a cruel abuser who has become as bad as his own abuser. as for female characters, unlike shen jiu, they are not static-they are mostly unstated. Most have little canon basis for their character. They actively invite extrapolation and interpretation and adding to the bare bones of what they are. We knew what shen jiu was, and endlessly made more of “What if he/things were different” but women in scum villain are almost always “we know nothing about them so you can make whatever you want about them”. Both are easy opportunities for fandom exploration. One as character exploration in the means of making something different out of them and the other in the means of making something of them at all. now scum vil itself posits the idea that “all these one dimensional pidw wives are actually their own people in Shen yuans world” and yet I rarely see the fandom do anything more than turn them back into cardboard props. theyre placed into tokenized yuri ships and put in the background of the main focus which is the male characters.

the question becomes then “why has the fandom run to the ground and standardized the potential exploration of a male character but leaves nearly every female character with equal potential or importance untapped” well. I think you can answer that yourself

dont get me wrong i genuinely do enjoy shen jiu as a character but i have to be in a very specific mood to deal with him and his everything so it absolutely pisses me off when im reading a fic with no shen jiu tags whatsoever and yet he is agressively shoveled into the fic like this is the third time this week its happened to me i think. like his actual screentime compared to how often he appears in the fandom is genuinely insane. again, i do like shen jiu but i truely dont get why he is so insanely popular in the fandom compared to other characters with just as tragic stories as him like qiu haitang, who has much more screentime. like. it gets to a point

yk recently ive been thinking about this au where sy is desprerate for some sort of escape (due to illness, family issues, social life, pick your poison) and ends up meeting a system!lbg and they hit it off. by that, i mean system! lbg gets sy to have an addiction of some kind. system! lbg takes advantage of sy's incredibly fragile mental state and they end up incredibly co-dependant, sy stops talking as much to his family , his few online freinds, he stops going to stores in person whatsoever, afterall, system! lbg is right there and he can give sy everything he needs.

Then sy gets transmigrated into pidw, he lives there for some years, everything plays out as in the novels until the widow era/sqq running away during jlc he runs into a plant that knocks him out sleeping beauty style, one that traps you in a dream where youre stuck at your most deperate. sqq is back to being a desperate sy who just wants an escape from it all, sat in his bed fading in and out of awareness, only one person hes willing to listen to. lbm probably attempts to snap him out of it but sy doesnt care. he refuses to hear him out, he isnt system! lbg, afterall. he just wont get it.
