So I’ve been researching Aran knitting right. For funsies. Except what do you mean it’s not that old. They started knitting on the islands in like the 1890’s ?? Literally the only evidence the patterns are older than that is this one random guy who went lol cables kinda look like Celtic knots so these designs are toooootally ancient guys. And then a bunch of textile historians called him a LIAR.

There’s also very little evidence supporting the clan unique knitting patterns. Like there’s a really good chance that’s just a marketing scheme. Also the whole thing where they identified sailors by the sweater that washed up? Also lies. Sailor’s sweaters were relatively simple and the myth came from this one play where a guy was identified from his socks BY THE PERSON WHO KNIT THE SOCKS. Like yeah if your family member knit your sweater they’ll be able to identify who it belonged to. Literally had nothing to do with Aran knitting either.

There’s such a high demand for fiber and sweaters too that most of the sweaters are made on the mainland with knitting looms (no shade to knitting machines but they heavily imply the sweaters are made by hand). Straight up not enough sheep on the islands to keep up with production. At this point I’m just hoping the wool I bought is ACTUALLY from Kerry Woolen Mills like they said it is.

I understand we’re lying for profit but please I was looking forward to some textile history (although I am still intrigued). If y’all want to read more the Wikipedia page has lots of good sources, I’d just recommend avoiding the Aran sweater market because they’re the ones selling the sweaters.

I have seen this post many times and I have finally decided to do the research. From what I have read, while what is described here is true, namely psychedelic substances containing dmt being smoked in the Andes 2000 years ago, the statement that this is the oldest evidence of the use of psychedelics is not accurate.

This person, I believe is referring to the use of plants in the genus Anadenanthera, which do indeed contain dmt (dimenthyltryptamine), in addition to other psychedelic chemicals. The earliest evidence of the use of this plant is its seeds being found with pipes in Argentina which date back to around 4000 years ago. Evidence has also been found that several other methods of ingestion or use of the drug.

Regarding the earliest known use of psychedelic substances, there is below a table from “The oldest archeological data evidencing the relationship of Homo sapiens with psychoactive plants: A worldwide overview” by Giorgio Samorini. Based on this paper, the oldest known evidence is nearly 9000 years predating the (known) use of Anadenanthera.

This is exactly why my mum cut contact with her parents, she later reconnected with her mom, and she was an amazing grandma to me. Her dad though... no thanks, but she gets updates on him from her sister occasionally. Funny thing, hes still alive and my paternal grandpa was more involved in my life even though he died when I was seven, lived across the country, and I only saw him about a week in the summer.
