STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES 2.13 - Obsession
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Just a heads up, my works on AO3 have been set to registered users only. This was a difficult decision to make and I'm not happy with it, but right now I'm just not comfortable with the data scraping that's going on. I might change my mind in the future.
For anyone who enjoyed reading them as a guest, I genuinely apologize and hope that soon things will change and I can make my work available to everyone again.
Imagine...
...that you’re sent by the Starfleet brass to evaluate the Enterprise. They’re suspicious about what Bones did to save Jim after Khan and all of the crews actions during the events of Into Darkness. The crew is less than pleased by your presence and make it known.
You didn’t want the assignment. You want it even less when you start having feelings for the over protective Captain who keeps trying to stall your investigation.
Bones: I'm not saying I'm always right.
Bones: I'm just saying I'm never wrong.
Bones: And yes, Spock, those are two different things.
Bones: When you say things like that I want to kiss you stupid, but you're already so God damn dumb that it'd just be cruel.
Jim: ...I'm having a lot of conflicted feelings about that sentence.
Alright, I know I’m late to the party, but hear me out - what about an au where, first and foremost, Prime!Georgiou didn’t die because she was awesome and deserved better, and actually got to continue to mentor Michael and continued to build a rich and beautiful friendship. Michael made a mistake, which is understandable, and was busted down in rank but not called a traitor and was able to continue under Georgiou as Captain.
Then, second of all, have it that Prime!Lorca was BFFs with Georgiou and Pike bc they all went to the academy together, and as soon as Mirror!Lorca showed up, both Georgiou and Pike went “Uh no, this isn’t Gabriel Lorca” and instead locked Mirror!Lorca up and mounted a rescue mission to the mirror verse with the Discovery and the Enterprise to save their best friend?Â
Like why can’t we have this healthy model of loyalty and positive human emotions to let Michael start her journey to greatness? She sees how vastly different Pike, Georgiou and Lorca are with their personalities, but how they’ve all achieved greatness in their own way and all value each other - and then she realizes that Tilly’s enthusiasm has its own illogical value and that she should broaden her horizon and risk things as well?Â
Don’t get me wrong, the edgy antiheroes from the mirrorverse are fun sometimes, but I’d like some positive role models and painful but gradual growth. I want Prime!Georgiou. I want her to be three dimensional and bad ass with her own motley group that she went through fire with that the rest of the Discovery gets to meet and learn from and from that find their path to greatness.Â
Or heck, maybe its the prequel, the Shenzhou is Georgiou’s ship, she and Pike with the Enterprise go over and rescue Prime!Lorca and after that experience, Michael learns what she needs to to trust herself and jump out of the nest. And just right out of the gate is made captain of the Discovery when it’s commissioned and put in charge of the crew and slowly becomes best friends with Tilly even though she’s a cadet because she’s learned friendship doesn’t care about rank or even dimensions. I don’t know I have a lot of thoughts about the possibilities of this that I’m sure no one cares about, but still.
Where’s this au? Can someone write this? Pretty please?
Imagine...
...that you’re Bones’ best friend from college and meet Jim when Bones drags him to Thanksgiving which Mrs. McCoy always invites you too as well. There’s nothing between you and Bones but honest platonic friendship, despite what his ex had accused him of, but the more time Jim spends getting to know you the less platonic he starts to feel.
Imagine...
...that you were the TA who helped Bones learn how to pilot. You had the biggest crush on him, but knew he was in a bad place from his divorce still and you parted as friends, but not the kind who keep in touch. Seven years later, Sulu is on family leave because he and his husband have adopted another kid, and you’re his temporary replacement. To your dismay, seeing Bones again reminds you of how much you had liked him - but maybe this time the feeling isn’t one sided.
Imagine...
...that you first met Jim because he was “dating” your roommate back at the academy. You’re roommate wasn’t exactly your friend and the affair ends disastrously for Jim. However, you and Jim had ended up becoming friends and keep in touch through the years until you’re assigned to the Enterprise permanently. The friendship continues on pretty well until a certain diplomat starts taking a shine to you and Jim takes offense - could it be he’s actually jealous?
Imagine...
...that before Bones is supposed to present an important paper at a medical conference he starts receiving death threats. Jim wants him to cancel going, as does Spock, but Bones of course refuses. The compromise is that Jim gets you, one of his good but not close friends from the academy assigned as Bones’ personal protection detail. Jim thought the two of you would get along - he didn’t expect the two of you to fall in love.
Imagine...
...that you are Scotty’s niece and accidently start dating Jim Kirk.
Imagine...
...that you and Jim have been dating for almost four years now and that Jim is working up his courage to ask you to marry him, while you think he’s struggling to find a way to break it off gently.
Imagine...
...you were on Yorktown taking a leave of absence from Starfleet when STB happened. Afterwards you run into James Kirk at one of the local attractions and he’s clearly helplessly lost. You strike up a friendship, though he gives you a fake name you play along and give a fake name of your own, and suggest seeing a few other local sites together.
Imagine...
...that Bones has fallen in love with an anonymous commentator who always reviews his papers and points out flaws/starts lively arguments about the material who he has started communicating with regularly outside of academic papers. What Bones doesn’t know is that the author is a low level Lt in the Enterprise’s science department - you. Spock, however, is well aware.
Imagine...
...that you’re the pilot selected to fill in for Sulu while he’s on family leave (he and Ben have adopted another child). You have no trouble befriending Chekov and through him Scotty and the engineering department, but you seem to keep having the most awkward run ins with the Captain.Â
You seem to find him at the most graceless moments, including but not limited to: him spilling coffee on himself in a lift, hitting his head in a jefferies tube making a repair, and him honest to God walking into the wrong restroom in the rec room.Â
It’s driving you crazy because all of the little glimpses of how human Jim Kirk is making him suddenly attractive to you. Meanwhile, the Captain seems to keep getting further and further flustered just at the sight of you due to his embarrassment.

“Are you incapable of keeping your nose outta other people’s business for more than five minutes?” Bones demanded in exasperation. “Bones, they had the fight literally right next to me in an enclosed area, I’m pretty sure it became my business.” Jim gestured.
Spock and Nyota had another disagreement in front of Jim and it stresses him out more than he expected. He just wants everyone to get along.

Imagine...
...that you met Bones in his first hour at the academy when he couldn’t get his apartment replicator to work and when you offered to fix it he lost it with a trademark tirade.Â
Seven years later, he sees you in the mess hall of the Enterprise as one of the new crew members and realizes where he recognizes you from. He spends weeks going out of his way to avoid you, knowing that you must think he’s the galaxy’s biggest ass hole.Â
This of course leads to the two of you becoming trapped together in one of the lifts during a crisis on the Enterprise.
