I get very annoyed by some of the posts that portray Ilya as an idiot. He's a giant party boy jock not fucking stupid. He's canonically very witty and clever in a second language and good at his job. 😒 also Shane is his enabler and competitor not his bitch wife. Shane wouldn't make him sleep on the couch, he'd be egging him on.

The GC series exists simultaneously in a world within which fear of homophobia drives pro athletes so deeply into their respective closets that they will implode their personal lives rather than face it AND another fantasy land full of rainbow sprinkles and fan service puppies in which homophobia is a single unpleasant but ultimately impotent business exec that can be shut down with a single firm “I choose him”. There is simply no way to reconcile these two worlds while retaining equal respect for both. Either the closeted athletes are paranoid losers that need to get over themselves or the exec is a cartoonish boogeyman set up like an inflatable punch bag in the way of empty fluff. As neither of these is narratively (or ideologically) satisfying, the only logical response is to reject the invalid premise. I’ll let you decide which that is.

The deadset determination with which Shane starts to persue Ilya once he allows himself to actually feel his emotions is nothing short of poetic. Shane is an immovable object until he becomes the unstoppable force. All the time he held himself back by compartmentalisation and represssion, but once the switch is flicked, his love for Ilya drives him forward, steadily and so bravely. He gets on his mission to get his man back in Tampa. Gently but persistently works his way through Ilya's emotional barriers. Doesn't even let a concussion stop him from inviting Ilya to his cottage, bravely sharing his sacred privacy. Making plans for Ilya, himself and their future, while honoring Irina. Stands shaking and afraid infront of his parents and tells them he loves Ilya. Shane is deeply commited to Ilya and he would move the world for him.
