seriously though bisexuality being defined as attraction to men and women is a heterosexual’s definition of bisexuality actual bisexual groups and organizations have been defining it as attraction to two or more genders or same and other genders since the nineties and plenty of nb people actually id as bi and refusing to accept how we define ourselves is so absurdly biphobic and heterosexist and jfc it’s 2014 can other queer people fucking realize and acknowledge this
The purple stripe on the bi flag is meant to represent attraction to nb genders and the bisexual manifesto published in Anything That Moves includes the lines “Do not assume that bisexuality is binary or duogamous in nature … In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders.” That was published in 1990. It’s older than a lot of people here, including me, and older than terms like “pansexual” and “polysexual” by at least a decade. Bi history is important.
‘Bisexual’ meant ‘all genders and none’ back in the 1970s when I came out. It’s important to remember that. Maybe the word isn’t quite right now, but the meaning behind it, in my experience, always has been.
It’s 2018 and there are still people who think bisexual is transphobic. This post was written four years ago and is still relevant.
Five years later, Fitbit are still bad at gender and sex
Since my testosterone levels are now too high for the highest typical female range and too low for the lowest typical male range, I decided to try getting in touch with Fitbit again to see if they’d consider acknowledging that their sex binary is transphobic.
It’s estimated that 1.7% of people have an intersex condition, and 0.4% of people are nonbinary. Fitbit has over 25 million active users, so we can guess that over 100,000 of them are nonbinary, and a lot of them are receiving hormone treatments. We can also guess that 425,000 of Fitbit active users are intersex.
As things currently stand, if you’re trans you have to select a gender in your profile that matches your hormone levels - or all your calorie burn info and nutrient calculations will be incorrect. That gender you selected is public on your profile.
That’s right, folks. You have to expose your sex assigned at birth with Fitbit if you want the site to work properly. That is illegal under the UK’s Equality Act 2010. And there is no provision or accommodation whatsoever for nonbinary people.
But wait, it gets worse! Failing to store correct information about trans people is illegal under GDPR in Europe too! By conflating social gender with hormones to calculate calorie burn etc, they are failing trans people under GDPR.
I actually reported this to them five years ago, and it has been ignored.
Here’s the latest issue, and if you have a Fitbit account please do head over there and add to the 54 thumbs-ups that are already there.
I get really confused when americans, when talking about universal health care are like ‘yeh but it’s not free sweaty :) :) you have to pay it through taxes :) so gotcha!!’
and I’m like ….???? That’s the whole point??? Everyone pays their fair share so that no one has to be turned away because they don’t have insurance??? And no one has to set up a Fundraiser page just so that they DONT DIE???? So people don’t put off going to the doctor because they’re scared of going bankrupt?? Because healthcare is a RIGHT and should be free at the point of access?!?
“So no one has to be turned away” she says hahaha go to a universal health care country and get a necessary operation in less than a few years and come back and talk shit.
Look at the cure rates compared to mortality rates in universal health care countries and compare them to ours, then talk shit.
Tear your ACL in a universal health care country and see what the people say if you should go to their hospitals or go to an American hospital, then talk shit.
2010. I’d been feeling a bit ill. Work was going nuts, so I figured it was stress. Pretty good call considering a week later work fired their entire IT department (of which I was part).
But then I got sicker. And it turned out I had cancer.
Burkitt’s lymphoma, stage 4a. It had spread into my brain and spinal column. 90% cure rate, but I needed nine months of chemo - and not the outpatient chemo, nope, talking multiple week stays per round of the magrath protocol. Drugs were about 10k an IV bag. I was unemployed. And there were complications.
Thankfully I live in a country with universal healthcare. And it didn’t cost me a goddamn cent to save my life. I’m now officially past the five year mark to move me from “remission” to “Cured”.
I’ve lived in a universal healthcare country my entire life. And I’ve seen the US system in action. Your system is fucked. Straight up fucked. You’ve got fucking Dickensian shit going on there, people dying on streets from preventable causes or ending up broke for breaking a hip. Your health insurance companies have you by the balls and people like you are begging them to squeeze harder. What the actual fuck is wrong with you?
“But but but TAXESSSSSSSSS”
yeah no shit. That story above? Happened when I was 32. I’d spent 14 years of my life paying those fucking taxes that funded the system that saved my life. And guess what? Now I’m cured, I’m…Back..at work..And have been for several years…earning waaaay more money and paying back into the system. This shit doesn’t exist in a vacuum, dickhead. You’re not feeding some imaginary pack of leeches, you’re paying forward on your own damned healthcare so you don’t have to argue with an insurance company while trying to heal.
i also don’t get why americans can’t wrap their heads around the fact that universal healthcare is actually cheaper
like yeah your taxes might go up (hell, take a chunk out of the military budget, they might not even change) but you won’t have to pay ridiculous health insurance premiums. it’s a net saving, dumbasses.
Also I care about people that aren’t me
Also I care about people that aren’t me
the only people I have ever known who voluntarily went to an American hospital instead of a Scandinavian one (Scandinavian hospitals being all universal healthcare), was my big brother’s family who have a son with a heart condition. They’re Icelandic. Iceland, with a population of about 300.000 people, does not have a specialised children’s hospital so the surgery they needed for their child just wasn’t available in the country - not uncommon, so what the Icelandic health care system does in those cases is pay for the surgery to take place abroad in a hospital with doctors who can perform the surgery. So they decided to go to America (Iceland paid) to some hotshot children’s hospital to get surgery for their baby, and they had to wait 4 months for this vital and urgent surgery even though it was paid for up front. In your so-called amazing American hospital. For comparison, the same kind of surgery here in Denmark is actually urgent, so the child has to wait 2 days tops to get the damn surgery.
So miss me with that “waiting time of a couple of years” bullshit. That’s not a thing.
“But you’ll have to wait” – we still have to wait if we’re not rich. At least I won’t be bankrupt by the end of it.
How To Appeal A Post When You Don’t Have The Appeal Button
Since the 17th about 12 of my posts where flagged as adult content and when I went to try and appeal it there was no appeal button. I went through their help and read the whole article. I even contacted support who then copied and pasted their help page not even trying to assist me. All I know is that there was supposed to be a button for the original creator to click and allow up to appeal but there wasn’t.
On my computer:
On the app:
See no button for appeal.
It has taken me days to figure out this work around and I thought some other people out there might be having this issue.
Now here is how you appeal your post when you don’t have the appeal button
Now go through your blog and find all your pages with censored posts clicking on them to take you to the original post.
Take a look at the url.
See that number there? Copy it!
Open up a new page and type in this:
https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard/blog/your url/
At the end paste that number.
When you hit enter you will get this:
The appeal button is finally there! Click it!
You’ll get this message and then you’ll click appeal again.
Your post is now being appealed.
You can check that it was fixed just by refreshing your blogs page.
And that’s it! I know it is stupid and ridiculous to do such a ridiculous back method but unfortunately it’s the only solution I’ve come up with.
Also no you can’t just use the weird sidebar dashboard to find it as any flagged posts don’t actually show up at all in it.
Anyways I hope this helps you guys.
So I just learned something that pisses me off. Y’know quinoa? The ~magical~ health food that has become so popular in the US that a centuries-long tradition of local, sustainable, multi-crop farming is being uprooted to mass-produce it for the global market? Potentially affecting food stability and definitely effecting environmental stability across the region?
Ok, cool.
Y’know Lamb’s Quarter? A common weed throughout the continental US, tolerant of a wide variety of soil conditions including the nutrient-poor and compacted soils common in cities, to the point where it thrives in empty lots? These plants are close relatives, and produce extremely similar seeds. Lamb’s quarter could easily be grown across the US, in people’s backyard and community gardens, as a low-cost and local alternative to quinoa with no sketchy geopolitical impacts. You literally don’t have to nurture it at all, it’s a goddamn weed, it’ll be fine. Put it where your lawn was, it’ll probably grow better than the grass did. AND you can eat the leaves - they taste almost exactly like spinach.
This just… drives home, again, that a huge part of the appeal of “superfoods” is the sense of the exotic. For whatever nutritional benefits quinoa does have, the marketing strategy is still driven by an undercurrent of orientalism. You too could eat this food, grown laboriously by farmers in the remote Andes mountains! You too could grow strong on the staple crop that has sustained them for centuries! And, y’know, destroy that stable food system in the process. Or you could eat this near-identical plant you found in your backyard.
so true – another example is acai berry, which is just about the same for you as any other berry. +lots of plants we deem weeds or invasives are incredibly hardy and nutritious! look out for dandelion, wood sorrel, and Japanese knotweed
Dandelion is delicious and can be used in many different ways from salads to drinks. All you need for good foraging with a identification book and a bag.
Lambs’ Quarters DO grow across North America in peoples’ back yard and community gardens. And, some of us were taught by our seanchaidhean, our tradition-bearers, not to pull them up but to let them grow. Their leaves are richer in protein than spinach, but they grow over four feet high: virtual spinach “trees” where you can go harvest the leaves for salad or cooked veg over and over again. Grown as a companion-plant with beans or squash they provide stakes that the vines can be trained up (in place of corn, which in my area is vulnerable to local wild herbivores. Lambs’ Quarters will grow up through a thick mat of pine needles, will grow in drought conditions and in the hard-packed dust on the edge of roadways. And unlike dandelion, which is non-native and is crowding native plants out of their ecological niche, Lambs’ Quarters are a native plant that belongs here. Public service request for responsible gardeners who appreciate and nurture dandelion: please gather the flower heads before they go to seed. Do the same with chamomile, chinese lanterns, blue bells and any other “vigourous free-seeding” non-native that grows on your land.
This inspired me to do some googling. Quinoa, lambs’ quarters, and orach are all part of the chenopodium group (not sure of the taxonomical word) I’ve grown mountain orach and it’s delicious, I prefer it to spinach because it’s hardier and doesn’t bolt to seed as quickly. Imma stop pulling lambs’ quarters and try its leaves and seeds!
There is only one reason why we hear so little about the edibility - and yumminess! - of many of the plants we find growing in ditches and back gardens. One reason only - we don’t have to produce them or buy them.
Consumerism is a consciously engineered system to make people produce and consume, produce and consume, in the name of this fantasy-monster called “progress”. It is the younger twin of capitalism, and is made to have so many steps between the idea of a product to the consumer, that everybody has to pay somebody else only in order to be able to do something so basic as to eat. Most of the time and energy spent in order to be able to eat is never spent in our favour, but in the favour of those who control the system, and who consume and consume without ever producing anything at all.
How many of you following this post know that there are even people who earn money on the ignorance of people by selling them weed seeds? Dandelion, chicory, lamb’s quarters, clover, rosebay willowherb, burdock, purslain, wood sorrel, white mustard chickweed, reedmace… Of course nobody tells them that these plants are the same plants that they spend their summer Sundays digging out of their lawn and throwing away! I have heard people say things like, “Can’t be the same kind of dandelion, because I paid for it!” and “Yes, but these are cultivated and therefore better quality.” Which is true only of a rare few kinds, such as carrots, potatoes, tomatoes… Of which up to ¾ - three quarters - actually are thrown away by the commercial producers. Not donated to poor people or to kindergartens and old age homes. Not even sold to pig farmers. No, thrown away.
The only thing that can weaken - if not topple - this system, is to become aware of its mechanisms and the fact that its motto is a huge lie.
Truth is, outside of this system, all lunches are free.
Also have you ever lightly breaded and fried lamb’s quarter? Omg yum.
Wait are you telling me retail workers can’t SIT in the US!?
Yes people are usually allowed to sit instead of standing up for no purpose, even in third-world countries like mine, I’m so sorry american retail workers…
Like, do you have seats at your station or????
Yes, I’m pretty sure that’s how it works in most countries, if not every country other than the US. I’m sorry.
Standing is healthier
@nate2247 No. Standing for many hours in a row is usually healthier than sitting many hours in a row without being allowed to get up, but in places where cashiers are allowed to sit they can also stand, and often do to pack stuff and such.
The human body isn’t prepared to stand up for long periods of time without moving. It results in a massive venous pressure raise at the lower body, specially legs and feet, which induces swelling, development of varicose veins and such. It affects your entire blood circulation negatively and forces your heart to work harder than it should making you more likely to develop heart disorders too. Not to mention there are several disorders, specially back pain related to pressure over nerve roots, where standing up for so long can result in awful pain later. Even ignoring all that, it’s very uncomfortable.
Either way, the most fucked up thing about this is that there isn’t any practical reason to stand up here like in some other jobs. It’s just a big “fuck you” to retail workers and it’s sad most americans don’t seem to know this is not how cashiers work in most countries.
damn this tea scalded me
Is this what war is now?
We finally weaponized gay chicken
I told y’all about the time at Adeevka, right?
Tell us a story, Frosty!
I was at Adeevka where the Ukrainians are trying to take a strategically-located overpass from the Separs (I was there as a peaceful tourist who never even touched a firearm, of course) and the positions there are about 400 or so meters away from each other, so if you scream loud enough the fucks on the other side can actually hear you.
Up to this point, I’d observed a guy dropping his phone like it was going to bite him when I told him the Bruno Mars song he was playing was gay, and could reliably make people leave the room by asking them “would you rather sit on a chocolate cake and suck a dick, or eat a chocolate cake while getting fucked in the ass”, so it’s at this point in the trenches that a flash of inspiration hits me.
In my best Russian (which was utterly broken but “proper” Russian grammar is barbaric caveman-speak anyway) I scream out “next guy that shoots is gay”. And I swear to whatever god exists that two solid minutes of silence followed. It was some guns-fall-silent Christmas miracle shit
thats it, thats the Gay Agenda ™ : world peace
antiweaponized homophobia
PAY ATTENTION! This is how you weed out the men who deserve your time and the ones that don’t. These dudes are literally telling you who they are, but y'all refuse to listen. Your safety comes first.
I’m in a FB group where dudes 30 and older were having full tantrums over this post. These are the same guys that admit:
Not deleting nudes post break up
Not believing when women that were sexually assaulted
Not believing sex with a partner that is sleeping is rape
Etc.
Please do not date people that take issue with your protecting yourself.
i deadass took a picture of my dates license and sent to my homegirls in the gc. and turned on my location. yea you cool but it’s always about me and my safety.
Men who aren’t trash should already know this is commonplace. One of my last dates even offered to take a picture together for my safety text.
Men who get mad when women try to protect themselves are just telling on themselves, nothing more.
All you people out there talking about “spreading my private information” like you don’t drive around with your liscense plate out there for everyone and their mom to see all day every day. Sit down. Shut up. She didn’t ask for your social security number you absolute acorn. Your plates are public knowledge.
Anyone who acts like this when you are trying to stay safe at best doesn’t care if you are safe and at worst…doesn’t want you to be.
OH MY GOD whyyyy did no one tell me you’re supposed to send thank-yous after interviews?? Why would I do that???
“Thank you for this incredibly stressful 30 minutes that I have had to re-structure my entire day around and which will give me anxiety poos for the next 24 hours.”
I HATE ETIQUETTE IT’S THE MOST IMPOSSIBLE THING FOR ME TO LEARN WITHOUT SOMEONE DIRECTLY TELLING ME THIS SHIT
NO ONE TOLD YOU???? WTF! I HAVE FAILED YOU. Also: Dear ______: Thank you so much for the opportunity to sit down with you (&________) to discuss the [insert job position]. I am grateful to be considered for the position. I think I will be a great fit at [company name], especially given my experience in __________. [insert possible reference to something you talked about, something that excited you.] I look forward to hearing from you [and if you are feeling super confident: and working together in the future]. Sincerely, @mellivorinae
THIS IS A LIFESAVING TEMPLATE
YOU ARE WELCOME
My brother got a really great paid internship one summer. The guy who hired him said the deciding factor was the professional thank you letter my brother sent after the interview.
should it be an email? or like a physical letter?
email, you want to send it within a few hours at max after the interview if you can so it’s fresh in their mind who you are.
Confirmed! I interviewed for a job right after arriving in NY. The interview went incredibly well, and I went home and immediately wrote a thank you letter and put it in the mail. I had a super good feeling about this interview.
I didn’t get the job.
However, a few weeks later, I was called in to interview with another editor in the same company, and I did get that job. I found out later from the initial editor (the one who didn’t hire me) that he had planned to offer me the job, but since I didn’t follow up with a thank you letter, he assumed I didn’t really want it. He offered the job to another contender–but when he got my letter in the mail shortly after the offer had already been made, he went to HR and gave me a glowing recommendation. It was based on that recommendation that I got called in for the second interview.
So: send an email thank you immediately (same day!) after the interview. If you’re feeling extra, go ahead and send a written one too. OR go immediately to a coffee shop, write the letter, and return to the office and give it to the secretary.
Either way, those letters are important.
Pro tip: If you really want HR to develop a personal interest in your application, publicly thank them on linkedin. Just make a short post telling your network about how X recruiter really went above and beyond to make you feel welcome, or about how be accommodating and professional they were, or whatever. Make sure to use the mention feature so they’ll get a notification and see it.
Flattery will get you everywhere… and public flattery that might make its way back to their manager, doubly so.
Obligatory plug for one of FreePrintable.net’s sites: ThankYouLetter.ws. They have a whole section with interview thank you letter templates, and a page with specific tips for interview thank you letters. (There are also tons of other letter templates if you browse around a bit.)
As a former professional recruiter and recruiting manager, I confirm, especially for entry-level positions, where you are competing with oodles of people. This little thing can make a difference. Also the fact that, maybe, you took time to google the “interview etiquette”.
SIGNAL BOOST
The post-interview thank you notes can be a good way to recover in case you got asked a question whose answer you either didn’t know or felt was super weak. So if you follow the above given template, jump in with something like “upon further thought to your question, here’s my revised answer.”
But yeah always send a thank you note after an interview. It’s a small thing but it makes a hell of a difference. And def send thank you messages to any recruiters who may have helped. And also after you get the job. Small things like that really go a long long way.
