Upcoming Korean MMO “Black Desert” shows incredible level of customization {x}
If Hollywood dies, the industry has no one to blame but itself.
In regards to Hollywood’s current summer slate, customers voted with their wallets. They don’t want what Hollywood is offering, in part because its continuously catering to a demographic losing interest in the movies.
That brings us to another explanation: Some believe Hollywood’s predilection for all things testosterone-laden is causing the downturn. As Kelly Faircloth of Jezebel glibly put it, “If you essentially ignore half the population, you’re leaving money on the table.”
The numbers paint a clear picture: “Females made up only 39 percent ofAmazing Spider-Man 2’s debut audience, compared with 42 percent for 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 46 percent for Spider-Man 3. The same trend applies to Transformers. This summer’s Age of Extinction skewed 64 percent male during its first weekend, more than the previous two films, and it played the oldest.”
Women are not interested in seeing movies so generically masculine they’re tantamount to a two-hour Dr. Pepper Ten commercial. Summer 2014 was so brutal because Hollywood ignored the most protiftable demographic—not because of The Pirate Bay.
An interesting look at the current downturn in mainstream movie revenues - and certainly the reason I haven't been so keen to see a majority of recent releases.

Equilibrium "Erdentempel" Album review
Folk Metal is notoriously becoming an ever "gimmicky" genre in the eyes of some overly-elitist members of the Metal scene, it can be viewed in a similar vein to that Eurorave song you loved from the 90's when you were a kid (mines was The Vengaboys), brilliant for coming on in a club or at a festival when you have a beer in your hand and an alcohol induced coma coming ever nearer, though you wouldn't even touch or acknowledge the genre when you were in the sombre of your own house and wanting some intelligent music to take your mind on a wandering journey, it has been continued to be taken less-serious as the genre has grown and some certain bands (namely Korpiklaani and Alestorm) have broken the boundaries of the underground metal scene. Luckily for me, i tend to have beer always in an arms reach and I'm pretty much always up for a party which makes me very partial to some Folk Metal (though i would be wrong in writing that i haven't occasionally snapped at Korpiklaani for being only slightly more than an unintelligible party band).
Equilibrium have always been a band that i have personally held in higher standard than most other party-oriented Folk Metal bands, they have incredible musicianship, some very talented vocal patterns for such up tempo music and even manage to make the flute (alright, flute keyboard samples) sound serious in metal, a talent which most bands have yet to be successful. For me Equilibrium and Ensiferum are some of the very few bands that actually continue to make Folk Metal a viable and interesting genre.
This new Equilibrium album isn't innovative by any means, i don't think i could really associate innovate as a word even slightly connected to the ideas of Folk Metal, it is however incredibly interesting. They have pretty much kept the formula very similar to previous albums which is very catchy folk influenced melodies using various folk instrument keyboard samples over up-tempo thrash oriented metal and very heavy, yet clean screamed vocals, all in all, its a very tight and impressive sound. They really surprise me on this album though, Equilibrium have always seemed to steer more further from the gimmicky Folk Metal and have been going for an ever more semi-serious sound (I don't think anyone can deny that Equilibrium's 8 mins+ instrumentals on the previous albums aren't metal masterpieces). What they have seemed to do on this album though is effectively seen what the Elitists have been writing on the issues of cheesy and upbeat folk metal and thought "hey, lets give them exactly that and turn the over the top cheese to maximum". as i was progressing through this album, i spent most of it having my jaw hit the ground, this is the most over the top, happy and just eccentric album i have ever came across, it just makes you want to grab everyone around you, hug them, make them chug about 2 litres of beer and dance around having the most happy smile on your face that you have ever had. This album possibly isn't overly innovative and wont be famed as a deeply influential album in years to come, this isn't Folk Metal's "Dark Side Of the Moon", it is however, to me the perfect drinking album and by that proxy, Equilibrium have created the perfect Folk Metal formula since that is all the genre is associated and connected to now.
As much as that can be viewed as a bad move by some less alcohol induced Equilibrium fans that was hoping for another overly powerful metal masterpiece that is more the soundtrack to galloping into battle than a drinking game, i see this as a brilliant move as Equilibrium have managed to succeed in doing an album that most bands of this genre cant ever manage. They have created a an album that as overtly cheese filled and what usually would seem more gimmicky than an English man in a kilt and a pirate hat going to see Alestorm, yet i still think its a serious album when im finished and a brilliant serious album at that.
As an album it is consistent and relatively strong throughout, possibly slightly too constant for some people, IT'S FOLK METAL THOUGH, you know what to expect when you put it on and musical diversity isn't a trait that Folk Metal is known for, just be happy that every song isn't named after a type of alcohol.
Agalloch "The Serpent and The Sphere" Album Review
This is thesonofthemorning signing in and starting to do his reviews for this. I was originally to start and join in on the review of the new X-men movie such as tinyoceans and themightychewbacca had, though since I managed to miss the logical deadline and appropriate time scale to review the movie in I'm going to skip over reviewing that and jump to what i do best, being overly judgemental about music and i thought i would start on a relatively recent album. Enough of the personal blurb though. Time for an album review that is now a month late (expect more albums review on a much more regular basis and it will mostly be new albums). Agalloch for anyone that doesn't know are a incredibly eclectic band in the world of extreme metal that manage to fuse Neo-Folk, Black Metal, prog and just general atmosphere that most Shoegaze and Dream Pop bands couldn't even dream of creating. When Agalloch announce a new release, it is always highly anticipated by the Extreme Metal world. Agallochs previous efforts have always had very key influences and new experimentation to add the trademark that keep them apart and unique as Agalloch releases, they always manage to have similar traits which agalloch have been famous for though, namely the incredible dreamy atmosphere that John Haughms song writing always manages to possess and even more impressively maintain being fresh through the lengthy career of the band. It is even more impressive considering they are an American band (to escape any people thinking that i have a lesser opinion of American bands and musicians, i don't and i love an incredible amount of American bands, Dreamy atmosphere in Extreme Metal has always been more of a trait of European Bands though). Agalloch on this new album "The Serpent and The Sphere have seemed to have taken a step back in being newly innovative and experimental and have seemed to have went for a more straight approach. As a band Agalloch have always been a slight loose cannon when it comes to what the key influences are from album to album and incredibly this has never created for any disappointing efforts and has only ever been making fans ever more eager for every new release, on this album they are still experimental if compared to most other bands that exist in the world, for Agalloch though, they have seemed to of calmed and brought back the amount of the new experimentation that they always strive to do and have instead, gathered and managed to create what appears to be a much more new form of innovation for them, this albums is more a gathering of the key elements and influences of the bands previous releases and through retouching on the sound and elements of every previous album. They have managed to create what i think is the grand masterpiece of Agalloch. This album collects the Black Metal elements of Pale Folklore, The Neo-Folk and more ambient elements of The Mantle, the innovative song writing structure and style of Ashes Against The Grain and the even more Dreamy and almost shoegaze experimentation that was added to the Agalloch tapestry on Marrow Of The Spirit, through mixing these elements and tying up the elements of every album rather than experimenting and embarking on the journey to new sounds and influences, they have managed to create what I think is the pinnacle sound of Agallochs career. I think the most noticeable change they have on this album is the noted revival of the more Extreme Metal oriented elements which was actually continually disappearing on the latest previous releases. On this album they seemed to have went back to the more Metal oriented roots which is very big relief considering how many bands that have a similar amount of experimentation and dreaminess in the metal world have effectively discarded the metal elements from any new releases as if its going out of fashion (Alcest, I'm looking at you) and as much as I love shoegaze and ambient being key influences in these bands and even to such an extreme that they write out the metal elements from any recent music (Anathema did a brilliant job of that), its a breath of fresh air to see that instead Agalloch have embraced the metal elements on this album. The producer of the album is Billy Anderson of Sleep and Neurosis production fame. The production is crystal and almost noticeably digital and yet still manages to very impressively maintain the atmosphere and delicateness of the Agalloch sound, for a producer that is famed for producing mostly Doom and Sludge bands and creating such sonically destructive and crushing albums that could make any venue a pile of rubble (Sleeps album Dopesmoker always has that effect), he really knows how to handle the very light and delicate elements of Agallochs sound and make them shine through the entire album, i think this incredible production is actually a a major factor of what makes the album brilliant. Some Key songs on the album are the intro track "Birth and Death of the Pillars of Creation" which has an almost Funeral Doom feeling to the atmosphere and tempo of the track, it makes for a great atmospheric kick start to the album and is so beautiful, haunting and dark that i have a feeling that it bring a grown man to his knees in tears. The instrumentation has such depth through the entire song which keeps you hooked and focused to every note of the song, though it still gives every instrument room to breathe which is very impressive considering the very doom oriented guitar tone the song has which to most bands sound would manage to swallow any room for other instruments and make minimal (which can be sonically pulverising and incredible for many bands such as Conan, though would destroy Agalloch's sound), on this album though, they still manage to give every instrument its own space even when the guitar tone is so sonically deep and large, for this album, it really is the best introduction you can ask for. Another key song on the album for me is "Celestial Effigy" which is a personal favourite for me and is a portrait of classic Agalloch. This song is possibly the lightest and the most delicate of the metal oriented songs on the album, The song is so powerful and yet still incredibly delicate and gives you a feeling that it has a personal grip over you through the entire song, John Haughm's vocals are so raspy and yet still beautiful, he has an almost whispered style of screaming that is so haunting and really makes this song even more special. The instrumentation of the song takes a more Prog oriented turn and incorporates some King Crimson-turned bleak Folk influence which to me keeps me even more intrigued through the entire song, through so much technicality, it still manages to have such an incredibly dreamy atmosphere that really steals your heart. I think the only slight criticising comment I can make it on how the album has 3 interludes which i think is personally slightly too much, these interludes are strictly acoustic guitar by Musk Ox's Nathanaël Larochette, though the interludes make for a brilliant entrance into the songs that follow them and really make the album have such a magic and beautiful flow to it, this album is that brilliant I even have to turn slight criticism of it into a compliment. This album to me really is a staple in the vast career of this band. This album really collects every element from every era and reincarnation of this bands sound and manages to show how far this band has come since Pale Folklore and how expansive a sound they can have and i think this really is an album that has been in the making for years through the amount of growth the band has went through. I really think this is the pinnacle album for Agalloch and is a testament to how innovative and creative you can be and how much musical depth you can have in metal. This album really is an emotional Journey that captures your heart and has such power that most modern albums can barely touch, this is the band that is really taking Black Metal to new levels and always has been more than any other band that is still relevant and i think will continue to do this for many years and many more releases.
Thesonofthemorning.
preface
"The series is set 97 years after a devastating nuclear war wiped out almost all life on Earth. The only survivors are the residents of twelve space stations in Earth’s orbit prior to the war, and the descendants of the people on earth who survived the war, called "grounders" by the 100. The space stations banded together to form a single massive station named "The Ark", where about 2,400 people live. Resources are scarce and all crimes no matter their nature or severity are punishable by death ("floating") unless the perpetrator is under 18 years of age. After the Ark’s life support systems are found to be critically failing, one hundred juvenile prisoners are declared "expendable" and sent to the surface in a last ditch attempt to determine if Earth is habitable again."

Even I'm Not Sure Why Kids Think This Is Romantic: The Fault In Our Stars, and Media Romanticism
Since it's author has a tumblr, and because of it's appeal to the kind of lost-and-alone teen too often found glued to their tech on tumblr.com, The Fault In our Stars has been filling up dash space for months now. Unfourtunately, all too much is made out of stories about teens suffering from ilnesses both mental and physical, and while I'm not going to bother musing on the sad relaities that might lie behind the populrity of this kind of story - if you want the figures, you're welcome to look them up - I am disturned that in the main this film has appeal for healthy, able bodied kids who have been told they should want to be in love "like this" for far too long. But going into this film, not having read the book (because even when the author reccomends it, having read the source material should not be a requirement to see or enjoy a film,) I could only wonder at what lay ahead of me. If I'm honest, I do have a little bit of a soft spot for romance and drama movies, they are fun - and in some way exist in most other genres, even when they shouldn't. Overall, The Fault In Our Stars was an entertaining, if morose, journey. The lead and narrator, Hazel Grace, is perhaps a little too fatalistic and mature for her age, even despite her immeasurably difficult life, but the realism she provides is a clean contrast to the pretentious sunniness of Augustus Waters. For me, the only really likeable character was the wonderfully played, quirky, and real Issac. Wonderful in calling out Augustus on his quip about his disability - a thing not to be made fun of, thanks very much - and charasmatic on the screen. Cinematically, The Fault In Our Stars is only a little above average. It utilises lighting and colour to build impact, but like most romantic movies, has no overwritten style or tone. Still, it is visually satisfying and attractive. Despite all of this enjoyment, though, with my friends in a half-full cinema surrounded by teenagers so young they will never know the struggle of dial-up slower than my Granmother trying to climb stairs, I was both reminded of the constant march of my twenties (Hey, most of my friends have kids, man,) and the strange romanticism that the media places on such doomed couples. Much in the same way that a majority of people seem keen to misinterpret the message which underlies Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," the modern media seems keen to complely ignore the messages which it popularies for young people. At the core of the story is the undenyable fact that even though we are doomed, we can seek happiness in our lives. Because, in the end, we're all going to die - some just a little sooner than others. the fact of the matter is that this is a story about two people who are dying and are quite simply just going about the business of living, however they can. Yet the chorus of ooh-and-ahh-ing at every little thing Augustus did or said for the duration of the film made it clear that most of the kids in that screen were there to slake thair primal, hormone-driven, media-stoked thirst. Call me shrewed and cinical if you really want, but I fail to see the romantic appeal in watching two young people who have been delt the worst hands possible by the universe go about the buiness of living as fully as possible, with one another. it's not cute, it's heartbreaking. And the blindness of all those young people in that screen on saturday to the tregedy of cancer and all it's horrors is not thair fault. It's the fault of the media outlets who have for so long fed the youth tragedy and horror dressed up as normality. I'd hate to throw around the idea that The Fault in Our Stars had a little too much of the "Twilight" treatment, but maybe it really did. Wait for the DVD. Or do one better than me and read the book.

X:Men Days of Future Past. A fresh start just not an overly good one.
So what to say about X-Men Days of Future Past? After watching the trailers and seeing the cast I was really excited about seeing this film. Yet at the same time I was also very apprehensive. I went into the cinema with high hopes and yet was disappointed.
If you are not a huge reader of comic books but are a fan of comic based films you undoubtedly will enjoy this film. Evan Peters is fantastic as Quicksilver. He's funny, charismatic and his attitude is spot on. Hugh Jackman brings his usual reliable Logan to the table. James McAvoy is again brilliant as a young Charles Xavier.
However Jennifer Lawrence and Peter Dinklage bring very average performances. Almost like they didn't want to be in the film. Their expressions were bland, their movement sloppy and the execution of their lines left a lot to be desired.
The visual effects are incredible. Be it in 1973 or in 2025 the effects artists brought their A game.
The main downside for me was the lack of explanation as to what happened that allowed Charles to re materialise or Magneto to get his powers back. There's too much of a story gap between X3 and DOFP.
Overall however it is an okay movie and if you are a fan of comic based movies I suggest you go see it.
Ranek Wolf
X-Men: Days Of Future Past destroys it's predecessors, thank the gods!
To say that the newest outing of the X-men movie franchise redeems the sins of past movies is a statement that falls far right of the mark. But it is a statement that I've seen tossed around a little too much, lately. This film is more than just an elastoplast for the ills of previous attempts (*cough*X3*cough*) at big blockbuster mutant events; it is a fun, witty, and engaging film in its own right.
If I had never seen another X-men film before, could I have enjoyed this one? Probably not. But despite that homework requirement that you have watched at least X1 and First Class, this remains a smart and challenging film which utilises the wonderful metaphors of the Mutant X gene to their full potential. While of course we all know that the idea sprang from a need for origin stories outside of nuclear fallout and radioactive spiders, it has come to represent much more than that, and time and time again allowed writers and artists to explore the constant western fear of the "other." This time around, that fear has lead to the development of advanced robots, the Sentinels, which identify and destroy mutants in order to contain the threat they pose.
Anyone familiar with the X-Men Adventures cartoon from childhood will remember those hulking machines in their red-and-violet colour scheme. Well, now they've had a serious makeover, but they're doing a bit of a better job. The Sentinels have driven mutant kind and any human sympathisers underground and into death-camp-like prisons. Enter Professor X and his ever-changing unit of fantastical X-men.
I'm not going to deal with any of the science of this movie, because well, I'm not all too sure the writers tried that either - but who cares, it's a comic-book movie. We're not meant to be able to understand it. Interestingly, when we meet them, both Hank and Charles Xavier are using their allotment of crazy science to suppress their powers. Hank simply hides his, while the professor's story is a much more painful look at the denial of disability in the mind of the patient, often overlooked in modern media. But of course, take from it what you will.
Beside a wonderful treatment of character development, Days of Future Past tied up many of the loose threads left in First Class and X3 - in the latter case mostly by erasure - but the clean slate of the ending provides us with a happy springboard for other films. We no longer have to wonder about JFK, either, so that's pretty helpful, right? Oh, and you might want to enjoy the scenes with X-men's wonderfully funny, quirky, Quicksilver while we've got them. I have a feeling that if Disney get hold of the rights for these movies, we won't see all too much more of him. This is an excellent film, and a brave in ways its predecessors could only hope of. Go see it.
