There are some specific-ass subreddits and cookiecutters in this world

“Belka” and “Strelka”, Soviet space dogs after landing. USSR, 1960. [1800x1295] Check this blog!
The amount of people in the notes to this post (and any other space dogs related content) being surprised that Belka and Strelka or some other “dogmonaut” survived starts to concern me. Surely you guys know that most of the space dogs survived their journeys and went on with their doggy lives? Certainly you understand that getting the living creatures into the space and safely bringing them back was the point in these experiments? Like, you all get that these dogs were sent into space as part of the programme aimed at safely getting a human cosmonaut there, and Soviets weren’t just launching puppies to their deaths for the fun of it? You don’t just baselessly extrapolate Laika’s fate on all of them, right? Right?
…
Anyway, in case you get worried or upset looking at the space dogs’ photos, please know that most of the space dogs survived their journeys and went on with their doggy lives. They were sent into space as part of the programme aimed at safely getting a human cosmonaut there. Getting the living creatures into the space and safely bringing them back was the point in these experiments. Belka and Strelka definitely survived their flight, Strelka had puppies (one was gifted to JFK), and they both lived well into the old age.
i forget her actual name(it translates to little star) but the last of the dog cosmonauts before gagarins flight ended up being adopted by gagarin and his wife and he often spoke about being grateful for her contribution
That would be Zvozdochka. She was also named by Yuri Gagarin. Here’s a picture of her with her friends sourced from a Russia Beyond article that manages to misidentify all 4 dogs (correct labels added to bottom of photo added by me)

Can anyone tell me why people hate Elon Musk? Like, what he's actually done that is bad?
At this point it seems to basically be, "He's rich so he's evil so everything he does must be evil ergo we must hate everything he does."
I'm pretty sure the hate is mostly because he's on the spectrum. Not in like a "we hate this guy because he is autistic" way but in a "this guy is really awkward and cringe and makes frequent social faux pas while also disagreeing with me politically so he needs to be made fun of at all times."
Basically people just hate his guts. I hate him because of his H1B Visa stance as well as the most-retarded vehicles and automobile manufacturing company ever to besmirch a paved road, in Tesla and the Cybertruck.
hes a retarded tech bro, he's to focused on the how and not enough on the why. he wants to put chips in peoples brains for music streaming and advertising. he tries to seem cool by pointing out all the issues caused by migrants in europe while advocating for migrants to the US. he's the kind of guy to watch jurassic park and think the message is "beef up security systems"
He didn’t even found tesla he was an investor who threw daddy’s emerald mine money around to worm his way into an executive role and claim the achievement as his own. He’s a retard who WANTS to be seen as a “cool nerd” tech bro so he aligns himself with and financially backs whoever the biggest grifter on the public stage happens to be and right now it’s donald trump who is now being pressured to allow infinite pajeets into the country because musk wants to replace the rest of his white work force.
He’s also a grown ass businessman in like his 50s and the most divorced individual on the planet he does not get a tism pass
He is a grifter and the world's biggest welfare queen ever. Even trump saw it
He's also starting to interfere in foreign elections, straight up telling people in other countries to vote for this party or that, because they're the only good choice, while he objectively has no idea about the internal affairs of any of those countries.
Granted, it's still (in most countries) up to the people, and if anyone takes voting advice from an out of touch billionaire from the other side of the world, that's on them too... except he's not the one who's going to suffer the consequences.
Personally I don't even hate him, not yet anyway, I'm just so very tired of seeing him and his bullshit every day. I cannot wait until the day Trump has enough of him and he is finally forced to shut the fuck up and stop playing global politics.
The fact that this is from 2018 and I straight up thought it was like last week, because things have only gotten worse since then (:
January 1, 2025 - A stray dog in Petea receives applause for being the first to cross the newly visa-free border between Hungary and Romania, as Romania joins the Schengen area.
Finally, some good local politics.
there's this word in Serbian 'vukojebina' which literally means 'the place where wolves go to fuck' but they use it to mean 'in the middle of nowhere'. it sure does the job well, but the visual stayed with me longer than I would have liked it to.
for chinese we have 鸟不生蛋, which is used to describe a land so barren and remote that not even birds would lay their eggs there.
In German we have "am Arsch der Welt", which means "at the world's ass"
In Finnish it's "Jumalan selän takana" - behind god's back.
I propose that these are all the same place. The world's ass, behind god's back, where birds would not nest and where wolves go to fuck.
In Polish that's
"tam, gdzie psy dupami szczekają" = where dogs bark out of their arses,
"zadupie" = behind-the-arse-land, "na zadupiu" - in the behind-the-arse-land. funnily, you can say someone lives "in some behind-the-arse-land" (na jakimś zadupiu), meaning there is more than one of those places.
but also "tam, gdzie pieprz rośnie" - where black pepper grows.
Fellow Poles, lmk if I forgor something.
one more Polish comes to mind:
"gdzie diabeł mówi dobranoc" — where devil says goodnight
In Bulgarian it's на гъза на географията - on geography's ass except it's alliterative. So like on geography's glutes.
we also have на путка си майна and на майка си в путката = in its mother's pussy = very far away
for something very close = на един хуй разстояние = at a dick's distance
Yeah, no, let's not start with the whole Oedipal stuff, I'll need a full day to write all the variations of ебало си е майката
Hungary also has "behind God's back", but there's also the much more descriptive "on death's dick" (halál faszán) (:
Name for the bird Falcon in European languages
by Ave-Nar/reddit
Sokol means falcon? That's so cool. I only knew that word as the quintessential soviet-era portable radio that every grandpa had when I was growing up, never knew it meant anything.
People will just ask you about your favourite period of history and you have to say something like “haha… maybe the Ancient Egyptians” because your other option is to tell everyone about the two month period you had where you were obsessed with the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 which fundamentally changed you as a person
Over a thousand tanks were needed to suppress a city with a population of less than two million, they needed that many tanks and most people in Budapest were civilians and they still needed that many tanks to do it because they weren’t giving in any other way. And again I must stress, before this, the West wasn’t entirely happy with the USSR but the soviets had helped during the war and really it was easier to ignore whatever was happening so they did, until the uprising which made it impossible not to see it, and this was a major driving force in moving the West away from Russian Communism, the Communist party in Denmark literally vanished overnight, without this the Eastern Bloc really might have been held together for longer so on the one hand the Uprising failed and was suppressed but on the other hand it potentially brought freedom to so many Eastern Bloc countries faster.
The way warfare worked especially in the city was that there were trained Soviet military groups, and obviously most of the revolutionaries were just citizens of the city, but because they knew the city so well they would group together, hold guerilla ambushes, and then all split up again, and most people in those groups would never see each other again, they would just do it over and over with different people each time.
The uprising began on the 23 October and the Communist Regime was replaced with the modern Hungarian Republic on 23 October 1989 exactly the same day over 30 years apart
Sometimes people are just indescribably brave
This is a beautiful post, but it also makes me really sad because that “modern Hungarian Republic” the heroes of 56 fought for doesn’t really exist anymore, it barely ever had a chance to exist before the country was swallowed up into corruption and authoritarianism yet again.
Yesterday the PM used his annual speech that was supposed to be paying tribute to these heroes as yet another opportunity to shit on the EU (literally equating it to the Soviet Union, and urging Hungarians to fight against it - even though we’re still EU members, and voluntarily so), declare that his main political opponent is a plant by “Brussels” who plans to give over the country to foreign powers if he wins the next election, and he basically called the people in the country who will vote for him traitors.
He’s preparing for potentially losing the election (if there is even going to be an election… there’s still two years to go) after being in absolute power for 16 years by planting the idea in his followers’ heads that if it happens, it was because of interference from the EU, and therefore cannot be accepted. This is coming only a few weeks after his main political advisor basically admitted that if Russia were to ever attack us, like they did with Ukraine, we would simply not resist. Put these things together and the future looks really fucking bleak from here.
I wish you luck with breaking free
Thank you for that <3
Scam artists
I miss the times when I could just not give a fuck about American eleections, no matter how much it was shoved in my face. But for the first time it really looks like it might have an actual effect on my own country's future, and that's a horrible thought.

What? No History?
That’s actually weird that there is no history. History was fun to learn. Well. Sometimes.
Yeah, I'm also part of the History Squad.
Mine were Literature and English, as in, foreign language English.
Yeah I think this poll is skewed because of the usage of "English" as a subject. For some people that means literature and grammar in their own language, while for others it means learning a whole new language from scratch.
Mine was English as a foreign language as well. Unfortunately all of my history teachers in elementary/high school sucked ass, so I only started appreciating that subject in university.
