the "rip ___ you would have loved ___" meme is inherently more fun with ancient characters. rip clytemnestra you would have loved morse code. rip theseus you would have loved the airtag. rip callisto you would have loved wearing shorts.
rip Icarus you would have loved parachutes
Rip Odysseus you would have loved GPS
What is up with lefty types pushing to learn practical skills (sewing/gardening/etc whatever) as like "you'll need to know this after The Revolution:tm:" and not, like, "this is a useful skill to help yourself & others in your communities Right Now". You all sound like doomsday preppers and it's weirding me out. We don't have to prep for communist rapture maybe thee revolution starts with helping your neighbors
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN LIKE....... it's weird. It's a subtle distinction but it's weird. People wanna be protagonists in post apocalypse movies so bad & when you're like "well that's not going to fucking happen innit" they call you a counterrevolutionary. Like yeah no I'm on board with dismantling the establishment etc etc I'm just saying you're being fucking weird about it. This is an action movie hero fantasy in a gen z aesthetic trenchcoat. You can just repair your clothes and feed people Right Now
The thing is. If the goal is "help yourself and your community", a lot of people's material reality makes these types of skills ultimately pretty inefficient ways to achieve that goal when compared to other, less exciting alternatives. Like e.g. if what I want to do is feed people in my community, I'm going to achieve more by taking some overtime hours at my job and donating that money to a food bank or something than I would ever be able to achieve if I spent all my free time gardening.
So the only reason why I'd choose to spend my time gardening in this situation would be for fun, or out of a sense of personal fulfillment. Which to be clear is completely morally neutral. But like. If you're aware of the fact that these skills are a pretty inefficient way to "help your community" which you're choosing over the efficient alternatives due to personal enjoyment, and you were uncomfortable admitting that, I definitely see how it'd be tempting to conceptualize developing these skills as things that are going to be vital to Helping Your Community in a future hypothetical situation.
Food banks and meal programs close to me partner up with gardeners and community gardens, so I don't think that's quite right.
Skills like gardening and food preservation and people around who can teach those skills can be a really important part of food security
In particular, access to gardening can really increase the quality of people's diets in areas where fresh vegetables and fruits are not as available.
I was learning in my African American history class about how when Black people in the USA started moving into cities, the cities passed laws and ordinances to restrict gardening because it was an ingrained part of their culture at this point to keep a garden to provide for some of their needs for food
does anyone have that one drawing of a greyhound from like the 1920s or whatever please please please i need it the one where it looks like a single piece of forlorn wire i need it

what's that one thing where they asked how ripely from alien was so realistic and believable as a female character in scifi for once and they were like "well we just took the dude from the original script and made him a girl and changed nothing else. it works bc men and women are the same?" and people were like "woah no way" and then didn't learn anything from that for 20 years
"how do you write such believable men as a woman?" "how do you write such believable women a man?" and the answer people who are good at it always give is "i just write people. were literally the exactly the same. do you think the opposite sex is some sorta totally different animal???" and people respond "woah that's wild. yea i do. and im not gonna stop thinking that goodbye :)"
Dorothy L. Sayers: Are Women Human (1938)
it's older than ripley
just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.
the first man to call me mean was my father who muttered the accusation into his broccoli before then, satisfied with the sound of the words, loudly declared them to the table at large
and his words struck me deeply because i had already softened the story that had earned this verdict, wrapped cotton around the reality of my fists and slashed all the swear words out of the script before telling my family about the theater and the boy and the darkness from earlier that day
"I-- he wasn't allowed to do that," i stuttered.
and my father said that he just had sympathy is all. one red-blooded american male to another. that i could have said yes. could have given the boy a chance.
the next time i told my family a story at the dinner table, i'd learned my lesson.
"i hit him," i said. i saw my father's face contort out of the corner of my eye. my heart raced. i smiled through my trembling chin. "he kept doing it. so i hit him again."
"that makes you a bully."
this label fit me better. "only to people who bully me first."
"you can't--"
"i think he deserved it," my brother said and fist bumped me over the bowl of mashed potatoes
"me too," my sister said. she watched my dad with interest, learning her own lessons. "im glad you hit him."
"you can always tell a teacher," my step-mom said, diffusing. she offered my dad more wine. "that should be the first step."
"you're going to kill someone one day," my dad said.
and, angry and fourteen, i hoped he was right.
So uh….some dude apparently recreated Adobe Photoshop feature-for-feature, for FREE, and it runs in your browser.
Anyway, fuck Adobe, and enjoy!
Give credit to the 30-year-old who worked on this for free and offers this service for free!
WHAT?!
I study graphic design and my tutor recommended and used this in his classes at art college last year, it’s so good it has SO many features for free, I really recommend it, even if you’re just trying to learn the basics of PS, such a wonderful thing <3
I use this and it’s fucken great. No bullshit. Really works. Sometimes the world is kind.
I actually use photopea for making gif. It’s such a free great alternative to Photoshop.

This website is elite. This website is the blueprint, it's the pinnacle. There is no website like it. I lwill never leave this website
no okay but persephone. when you listen to the soundtrack it's like she's a party girl she drinks and has fun but you guys dont understand because every single time she took a drink she grimaced. every single time. not once did she enjoy herself, because it wasn't her indulging in her wants it was her coping. and even!! even during livin it up on top when everyone takes a drink there's a moment of silence where they all look almost disgusted by it. none of them enjoy it it doesn't taste good to any of them yet still they drink it??
and then UGH okay because lady of the underground i was under the impression that she was interacting with the workers and whatnot like making the cracks in the wall that orpheus was about to break down but there's no one on stage. the only people on stage are the musicians, hermes, and persephone. none of the workers are there. she's singing to herself. do you understand do you get it?? especially with why do we build the wall right before that because I didn't realize persephone was in that song?? and the whole time she looks terrified. she Doesn't want to be here she Doesn't want to engage with this (my mom compared the song to being at a maga rally and she was 100% correct) but she does anyway, perhaps because she's forced to. and the look of heartbreak when eurydice appears; the way eurydice is confused and put off at first, but it doesn't take long for her to learn the words and join in????
eurydice and persephone is a whole other thing because I never realized how much of a relationship they had. like persephone is quick to be friendly with her, and eurydice is enthralled by that attention. but then during chant when persephone is singing about like the earth dying and people starving she's looking at eurydice walking by. she's looking at her and she looks heartbroken, she's reaching out to her but she can't reach her because she's not there. she watches as the fates strip eurydice of everything she has, and then that look of despair changes of one to fear as hades' eyes land on eurydice as he declares he'll find someone else who will be grateful. and I know that like flowers can be like an analogy for sa but I really felt it during that part. not so much in songbird vs rattlesnake? but definitely during the end of chant like AJHVSGDJAS.
and then like I said when eurydice enters the underworld persephone looks shaken. because she knows eurydice, and she knows orpheus, and- idk man. imagine being in hell and someone you know shows up, but you know they can't leave and you know they're soon to become a shell of who they once were. like. yeah
@blueisconfused blue your tags mean everything to me by the way. like yes this exactly this you Understand you Get It
one thing i wanna say though is data centers being built in rural areas is environmental racism + classism so when i see ppl bitching about locals bitching about data centers im like oh it’s literally because it’s not your backyard being demolished and your air not being polluted and your waterways not being ran dry and your soundscapes not being raised to unhealthy decibels ….
Hadestown really did just set the standard for all proshots going forward. "The cinematography of this stage production was extraordinary" is a wild sentence but completely true. This is the rubric all future proshots should be held to.
Profanity filters on single-player games are just so... incredibly performative. They don't 'protect' the player from seeing the word (you have to type it in order to activate the filter), the only thing they do is scold the player.
My favorite solution to people who get offended at the things they themselves typed is a disclaimer on a puzzle page that said "If you type profanity you will see it."
Out: Can you pet the dog?
In: Can you name yourself Fuckface McShitass?
It's really funny and jarring when you encounter a profanity filter in a single-player m-rated grown-up game for adults, but I don't think they even make sense in kid's games. If anything I think "If you tell the computer to call you FuckNugget it will do that" is exactly the sort of obvious, low-stakes 'actions have consequences' lesson that's perfect for kids.
"This impacts nobody but yourself, and even then it does not alter gameplay or the intended experience, however we cannot allow it and you need to know we disapprove of offensive language. Anyway have fun in Gorequest 4: The Tittening."
more games could benefit from brutal legend's profanity filter setting I think
Suddenly I saw in front of me the Statue of the Faun, the Statue that I love above all others. There was his calm, faintly smiling face; there was his forefinger gently pressed to his lips. In the past I have always thought he meant to warn me of something with that gesture: Be careful! But today it seemed to mean something quite different: Hush! Be comforted! I climbed up on to his Plinth and flung Myself into his Arms, wrapping my arm around his Neck, intertwining my fingers with his Fingers. Safe in his embrace, I wept for my lost Sanity. Great, heaving sobs rose up, almost painfully, from my chest.
Hush! he told me. Be comforted!
I resolve to take better care of Myself.
