i’m going to take a moment to deviate from my usual posts, so bear with me: the actress starring in the 2020 Mulan remake, Liu Yifei, has just voiced her support for the Hong Kong police. these are the police who have been brutalizing protestors for several months now with batons, tear gas, and rubber bullets, and recently blinded a young medic in one eye. Liu has a social media platform of 65 million followers, and has been in the national spotlight since her casting - her words have influence and impact. her conscious decision to stand by the HK police sends a clear message: that violence against civilians is acceptable as a means of control, intimidation, and suppression.
this breaks my heart. as a person of Chinese descent, Mulan’s character was a source of inspiration and empowerment throughout my childhood, and I’m sure I wasn’t alone in my excitement to see the remake, but I’m even more saddened and disgusted by Liu Yifei’s support of the police. note that Liu is a naturalized American citizen, and reaps the benefits of freedom and democracy in the US while supporting those who are fighting to silence it in China.
if Mulan were real and here now, she would be out on the streets of Hong Kong, fighting for the fundamental rights of 7 million Hong Kong citizens. please, please, please consider boycotting this movie. skip it, pirate it, do what you need to do, but show that you won’t stand for police brutality.
seriously can anybody PLEASE wake up for this????
do you guys remember what happened to tzuyu from twice? she raised her taiwanese flag and it raised so much hate that china banned pretty much every kpop group from her company to ever promote in China. the Korean industry already finds it hard to promote in China so they have to hire Chinese people to do the job, what do you think the government wants in return? exactly, for the Chinese artists to raise flags on their favor! and what do you think that will happen to them if they speak against what’s going on? well, you guys already see what china did to HK. they will probably just ban them from the country and leave no chance for them to grow as artists.
why do you think that everybody is just posting plain pictures with the similar sentences? like, they don’t even try to say why they are on the government’s favor, they just go “oh yeah hk belongs to China!!!!!” and ghost. i am not just saying this about her, but as a kpop fan myself who sees many Chinese artists in kpop doing it for the second time (they also were forced to do the same about China owning the philippines) i realized this is just political propaganda.
i am not even trying to call Chinese people ignorant, or speak against the hk people who are going through so much sh*t right now, but PLEASE. PLEEEEEASE wake up for this. don’t focus your strength on boycotting mulan because 1) it’s not her fault 2) that’s what the government wants, to show mainland China that you guys are just bored, spit on whoever doesn’t think otherwise and well, probably savages. that’s how manipulation of the public opinion works.
reblogging for this addition. yall it’s not that simple
also she has family in China still so they’d all be in danger if she spoke against them. Do something about the situation if you can, but don’t attack the girl just trying to do her job lol
Also, you know, there was that time the actress Fan Bingbing (of no insignificant fame and following in China) was vanished by the Chinese government for months with no explanation or warning and it turns out she was being held prisoner until she confessed to (supposed) tax evasion and publicly groveled before the Chinese government. (x) That happened and I’m sure Liu Yifei is well aware of it.
i wish it were easier to ask people, “can i just have a little extra love today”
wish I was on a plane going somewhere far far away
how the fuck do people just stay motivated their entire lives? what drives you? I got out of bed once and i’ve been exhausted ever since.
You need to learn to hate life to the point where you want to get revenge on existence itself
Best advice ever
