People Ignored The True Meaning Behind “Confessions of a Rotten Girl” by SAWTOWNE.
Possible Warnings: Going into a lot of religious things (being Christianity), and a reference to more “mature” content.
By people, I don’t mean everyone. But I mean a lot and lot of people. It’s in your face the entire song, through its’ visuals, lyrics, everything. When reading the comments on the actual video, the majority of things I saw people pointing out was the references to other medias and fanfic culture, Miku being a fujoshi, “wow yaoi!!”, etc. Of course, I couldn’t scroll through every comment, but going through at least the top 50 comments, only around 3-4 mentioned the main topic of the song.
Throughout the song, Miku talks about apologizing while praying to God about “sinning.” (Quite literally said in the first few lyrics: “Dear God, I've come to repent my sins
Let your blood wash me clean for I'm
I'm, I'm, I'm a rotten girl.”) This is a huge overarching thing within the story, Miku feeling guilt about being a fujoshi and fantasizing about relationships between men (I myself am not going to address issues about how this is possibly problematic, I’m not well equipped enough to do so, so please do not come after me for not addressing such). Within all the funny, silly visuals, there’s a true story I resonated with. For context, I was never truly Christian, but felt I needed to believe in some god. A few years ago, after reading fanfics, I would apologize and pray to God (again, I wasn’t even Christian) for my “sins,” and it wasn’t even about it being queer content, I am queer and was then, too, for clarification, but I still felt guilty because of the “mature” content. The constant thought in the back of my mind saying “you’re going to hell” plagued me for so long, and I’m so glad to be free of it. But this song resonated with me so much, and it made me so sad people just skipped over the entire theme of it. Looking on it, the song feels similar to “BIRDBRAIN” by Jamie Paige and OK GLASS. A song with funny silly visuals and lyrics but a capturing bridge that exposes the whole meaning of the song. It’s right in your face, but some people still chose to skip right over it.
My point in making this post is just to address the theme in the song, and how it relates to real people. I’m sorry if I switched topics a bit too much, I want my thoughts to be raw and there on the post for everyone to see. You’re welcome to debate things, correct me, etc on any information in this post.
