11.5k of pure hollanov angst coming up 😋
in his last year in boston, ilya calls shane’s number a lot, mostly to listen to his boring voicemail message:
hi, you’ve reached shane hollander. i’m sorry i can’t take your call right now. i’ll get back to you as soon as i can. thank you!
one night, with the bribe of a lot of soft kisses, shane finally finds out why he always has so many missed calls from ilya.
“your voice makes me relaxed, shane,” ilya tells him. “is like you’re talking to me. i—i miss you, a lot.”
so shane records a new voicemail greeting every week, referencing something he loves about ilya, or jokes that only ilya could understand.
it became their little secret.
and yuna wonders why shane, who has never changed his voicemail message since he first got a cellphone, is suddenly doing all this.
When life gets so bad that you gotta pull out that random batfamily fic from 2017 that hasn't been updated in 4 years and ends on a major cliffhanger.
After playing in LA, Rose takes the Cens out to party. The rookies are besides themselves, Wyatt geeks out so hard that he gets to meet more actors who play superheroes, Luca gets hit on by three different models and takes at least one of them up on it, and Ilya let's out his inner club rat and is just enjoying being in a good club. Shane goes along to spend time with Rose and make sure no one pukes in front of a camera again (looking at you, Holmberg!). Ilya, Shane and Rose end up leaving together. They’re all a little tipsy—the club had good Russian vodka, so Ilya had a lot and Rose joined him to “bond” and Shane indulged in a few beers which he still doesn’t do a lot during the season even though he’s more relaxed about his diet now, so they’re all not entirely sober. Outside of the club, they’re a little loud which draws enough attention that people recognize them—well, let’s be real, they mostly recognize Rose although someone says “isn’t that the gay baseball player from that Calvin Klein ad?” when they see Shane—and several people start filming. Which is of course when Rose’s heel breaks and she lands ass over teakettle on the sidewalk.
Shane and Ilya are immediately concerned and Rose tries to wave them off, “my heel just broke, guys,” and Shane says, “you broke your foot?” and Rose laughs and says “no, my heel” and waves her broken shoe around, the red sole glinting in the light. “Why are you wearing fucking low quality shoes?” Shane asks, honestly confused, and Rose gasps, “Shane, they’re Louboutins!” And Shane very seriously says, “well, then Louboutins are fucking bad quality,” which has Ilya cackling because he definitely knows Louboutins, probably even owns a pair, and knows that they’re not low quality at all. But now there’s a video out there of Shane Hollander calling Louboutins low quality and that’s going to be a fun time on the internet. Then Shane helps Rose up and she wrinkles her nose and says, “ugh I hate walking barefoot in downtown LA,” and Ilya says, “don’t be ridiculous, we carry you,” and Rose is all, “oh piggy back ride,” and Shane says, scandalized, “you’re wearing like a miniskirt, everyone will see your ass if you do that,” and scoops her up bridal style. And then he carries her down two blocks to the sushi restaurant they chose for a late night snack and the video of that goes even more viral than Shane’s Louboutin critique.
“Shane, how does it feel to be back on Montreal ice?”
Okay but would anyone be interested in a Luca Haas x Figure Skater fic where they meet accidentally over a scheduling mix up and both of them want to use the ice rink?? Just a thought hmm
I would kill to be loved the way hollanov love each other
guys please please PLEASE stop making Ilya borderline inarticulate in English. He has literally been in Boston for most of the year, since he was 18 years old and was/is SURROUNDED by people who he mostly conversed with in English. He probably spends less time speaking Russian (and ofc in Russia) than English. HIS HUSBAND SPEAKS ENGLISH TO HIM EVERYDAY.
As someone who learnt English after moving to another country, you would be surprised how much we pick up simply by listening. When people write fics where Ilya is playing for Ottawa and STILL can’t speak a full sentence of grammatically correct English, a part of me genuinely dies. Like, I understand him making mistakes or missing certain words but he’s not non-fluent either.
#justiceforilya
My new period-appropriate crack headcanon is that the boston raiders once used akinator to figure out who montreal jane is and it kept telling them if was shane hollander and they kept thinking it was the weirdest fucking bug
Guys pls pls pls drop some Lucas haas centric fics that don’t involve him having a threesome w Shane and Ilya 😭😭😭
Just read my first ever Lucas Haas-centric fic and I feel like my eyes have been opened
i love that shane's whole emotional experience of heated rivalry is just him being like why is he mean to me then nice to me then mean to me then nice to me then really nice to me then really mean to me then nice to me in a way that bewilders & disconcerts me so much it briefly turns me heterosexual. and then he's mean to me again. oh it's because he's scared. yay! i can work with scared. i intend to marry him
Heated Rivalry, p. 275
hudson as chicken little
love them so much. i wanna keep drawing them foreverrrr
Part of the reason why people find it hard to reconcile with Hollanov in TLG is that, in the book, they both show a more realistic version of what a relationship looks like after the honeymoon period is over. Ilya is constantly annoyed by Shane's diet and his overall uptight nature. Shane is annoyed by how Ilya is a shitty captain to a shitty team and how much of a dick he is. And upon that, their disastrous miscommunication works like fuel to the fire.
Jacob is right, "The Long Game" is "Sex Scenes from a Marriage". Shane and Ilya have a lot going on individually, so when they do meet (sometimes after weeks apart), they just want to relax with each other. Because of that, they simply never talk about their lives or at least the problems they are going through. Shane is under a lot of pressure to win another cup and is also dealing with his shitty team back in Montreal. He also desperately wants to be together with Ilya in public, as the closet is becoming suffocating. Meanwhile, Ilya has depression and suffers from nightmares about his dead mother. He is also under pressure to rebuild the Ottawa Centaurs, and is tired of hiding in the closet.
All of this was bound to bring out their ugly sides, and unfortunately, it ended up in a fight where they said things they regretted. And I don't think most readers like this part of Hollanov, because here our boys are dealing with a conflict. It is not out of character for these boys to get angry and say the wrong things. What matters is that these two found their way back to each other, apologised, and worked harder to make this relationship work. They built a marriage together in this book, which was important for the overall development of their relationship.
In short, sometimes, you are bound to be annoyed by your partner, lol. And it's okay. I do appreciate, though, that both Shane and Ilya never bitched about each other to anyone else, no matter how sick they were of each other. Even when Shane hated how Ilya didn't win games anymore, he never complained to Hayden or anyone else. In the same way, Ilya also never bitched to anyone about Shane's eating habits (apart from Yuna, I think?). Anyways, it can be hard to see your favorite fictional couple fight, but that doesn't mean either of them is the villain.
YESS exactly!! Also people fully blaming Shane for their fight in the long game is insane to me because, while I do agree he was at fault, it wasn't entirely him. Ilya didn't really know too much about what was happening or being said inside the metros locker room or inside Shane's mind and Shane didn't know about Ilya's depression or his dreams about his mum. But that's the whole point of a relationship, especially such a committed one as Shane and Ilya's. They bridge the miscommunication gap, work on their issues together and find their way back to each other. I find it insane when people say "I can't believe Ilya forgave Shane so easily" when that's what love is about. You forgive and compromise (within limits ofc), and work on things together. It's also so important to remember that when you love someone, you WANT to forgive them as well. Ilya and Shane both provably wanted to forgive each other and just avoid fights if they could because the time they had together was so limited.
