I’ve been listening to Devo lately, as one does, and something occurred to me. One of their singles from their debut album was a deconstruction of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” They played it on SNL.
But at that point, the song was only a dozen years old. Old enough to no longer be current, but not gone from memory, certainly. And I started thinking, what would the current equivalent be?
Well, what song was huge twelve summers ago?

Roman portable sundial in the shape of a cured ham. The whimsical yet precision-crafted bronze timepiece was unearthed in Herculaneum in 1760 and quickly identified as a rare pocket sundial by its grid markings. The exact workings of the 'pork clock' have, however, only recently come to light thanks to new research.
Historians at Wesleyan University created an exact 3D-printed replica of the sundial, complete with its lost gnomon (the part of a sundial that casts a shadow) which was described by an 18th-century museum curator as having been in the shape of a pig’s tail.
Outdoor experimentation with the sundial confirmed that the device would be hung from a chain with the sun on its left side, allowing the pig tail to cast its shadow across the grid. Vertical lines on the grid represent the months of the year, while the horizontal lines indicate the number of hours past sunrise or before sunset.
The Roman user aligned the tip of the tail's shadow to fall on the vertical column of the current month. They then counted the number of horizontal lines from the top of the grid to the tip of the shadow, to reveal the hour of the day.
While fixed sundials were common in towns across the Roman world, this prosciutto clock is one of only around 25 portable sundials to survive from antiquity and one of the earliest known to exist.

whenever i look into a historical monarch who doesn’t get talked about much and is just kind of a blank spot in my understanding of the historical narrative, 95% of the time what i find is pure white hot blistering capability. a pencil pusher for the ages. a 39 year reign with no more than three hours of sleep a night. there aren’t any good stories from his reign because he systematically caught and stopped all catastrophic good stories before they could start. you shrimply must respect it
semi-related but it’s ironic that game of thrones famously neglects to worldbuild textiles when (for me at least) textile history has proven one of the best lenses for an “aragorn’s tax policy” grounded view of history, especially for a late medieval-early modern english setting. yes henry vii of england reinstated the court of the star chamber, but you’ll get a better sense for the character of his reign by looking at how and why and with what result he disrupted the trans-european alum trade. yes elizabeth i of england loved essex and killed him, but you’ll get a better sense for her reign by looking at her sumptuary laws, why she passed them and how they were obeyed. the history of european pin manufacturing sheds more light on spanish-english relationships than any anecdote of walter raleigh could

I’m still really obsessed with Ratthi for shutting down Gurathin’s argument that Murderbot was only PRETENDING to watch Sanctuary Moon by tricking Murderbot into having an emotional reaction in front of other people by lying to its face about Sanctuary Moon. A very funny and very clever move but also one that could only be pulled off by someone who is himself familiar enough with Sanctuary Moon to know how to piss off a Sanctuary Moon superfan in 5 seconds or less. An icon and a legend.

Also, between the two humans discussing their suspicions that it's planning to kill them Murderbot decides the one who tricked it into risking its life to correct a plot summary is its best friend, and the one who doubted the sincerity of its fandom as its best enemy

I asked & Martha answered: The governor module hack is being shared/spread by the SecUnits who've already accepted the hack as this book opens
Martha said sex-repulsed ace and aro SecUnit rights, and more generally that all SecUnit biology is not accessible for sex, even if an individual SecUnit's neural tissue would think well about romance. There would be a big trust issue between any SecUnit and a human to overcome; she didn't think it was likely.
S2 of the TV show will have snippets of World Hoppers.
MB would love The Pitt; no sex on screen, and competent humans giving help to people who needed help.
Humans have been in space a long time; the Corporation Rim hasn't been around for "hundreds of years," and is on the verge of breaking apart.
Lots of "yay!" for JollyBaby when it got mentioned.
There will be only one more book after this one unless something very different occurs to her during the writing; she doesn't do a ton of plotting & detailed mapping, just sees what happens.
She intended to end the series earlier but wanted to write more ART & MB.
It would be interesting "someday" to write more about the UNMT fleet of sentient ships but it's not currently a series she has a plan or plot for.
Her ideas start with the world first, and the story and characters second.
She shouted out all the hard work and detailed craft work costume and props do that goes into putting the visual world of MB on screen.
MB is doing better and she sees it continuing to get better in Platform Decay and after the series-- beyond that she doesn't have a set ending imagined for it.
Oh yeah, forgot to add:
Someone in the crowd called MB "he" and about half the crowd piped up "it!" until the person self-corrected. Martha used "it" throughout.
MB very much thinks of itself as a machine intelligence, not as a human. Lots of conversation about other sci fi authors and science inspirations for her writing, as well as Martha's thoughts on sentience and awareness of self versus others as key -- and she solidly put down current "AI" as just a chatbot.
