Here is a list of all of the times that I could find where the word "lowly" appears in the official English translation of TGCF. Please excuse any mistakes. I had to sort through a whole bunch of the word "slowly" and it doesn't sound like a word anymore.

Xie Lian replied innocently, “It wasn’t us. Truth be told, I’m but a lowly scrap collector.” Vol 1, ch 6

All my support to fic writers who make whatever choices they want, including following fanon, but I had to satisfy my own curiosity as to whether Hua Cheng ever self-describes as "lowly" in the canon (translated) text! It appears that he does not (though Xie Lian does). He does, however, call himself a bunch of other fun things at least hypothetically, like "the bones you need to trample on your climb" (vol 8, ch 130), and he declines to argue when Mu Qing calls him "disgusting" (vol 6, ch 93)!

Shen Yuan who transmigrates into what seems to be a fairly standard and generic isekai harem story (not one he's familiar with), and yet every time it seems like he might add a waifu to his harem, things veer off at the last minute and she either leaves or gets paired up with someone else.

Ning Yingying, initially reluctantly betrothed to him? Yeah she doesn't actually warm up to the idea of marrying him, even after they become friends, and still breaks off the engagement when he arranges the option for her instead of insisting that she's fallen in love with him.

Liu Mingyan and Sha Hualing fight over him? You'd think that would mean they both want him, but if he's not around they'll just pick another guy to fight over instead. He's starting to think it might not even be about the man at all!

Little Palace Mistress, stuck in her unwanted betrothal to Gongyi Xiao? Actually she warms up to her betrothed when Shen Yuan gets involved and ends up inviting him to the wedding, instead of dumping Gongyi Xiao to pine after him.

Qiu Haitang, who claims he's a dead-ringer for her long-lost fiance? Actually seems to genuinely not like him because of it! Not even in a tsundere way!

It's starting to hurt Shen Yuan's self-esteem a little, honestly. Not that he wants all these women necessarily but he knows the tropes, he can see quite plainly that he's in a situation where he should be building a harem, and yet for some reason it's just not coming together. The problem must be him, but he's also read/watched enough isekai to know that even some pretty rancid guys manage to accumulate harems. He doesn't think he's so bad that he should be failing this utterly! Is he?

He'd ask his good male friends (which he has accumulated many of on his journey, having helped a lot of them with their various problems, quests, emotional difficulties, revenge arcs or mysteries) what they think, but he has no idea how to frame the question without sounding either insane or utterly egotistical.

Xie Lians possessiveness is underrated. He was so scared of losing hua cheng, the one person who seemed like he would stay by his side, he faltered in front of the reverend of empty words, a creature he defeated twice in the past. He gave that ridiculously prideful speech about being a god to distract heavens eye & co, to buy time to rescue hua cheng.

He's LITERALLY like "I've only had this ghost king for a couple weeks but if anything takes him from me I'll become a calamity MYSELF"

I often see people interpret Belle from beauty and the beast as only academically/mathematically smart and a "nerdy rule follower" from the princesses because she "reads a lot of books" and while they are not mutually exlusive (not at all!) i think people also forget how much of a fangirl romance reader she really is... like... she sings about wanting to reread and reread the slowburn and meeting between her favorite characters... she would be reading fanfics... she would be on ao3... she would introduce Beast/Adam to ao3... she would be on tumblr... she's not chill or quiet about anything actually she would be deep in the tags and reblogging

Underrated Liujiu modern AU is transmasc athlete Liu Qingge forced to compete in women’s sports + Shen Jiu, season pass holder to most women’s leagues. Shen Jiu is making it his mission to get this man out of the women’s teams, and a lot of his rhetoric looks very terfy, despite campaigning for the rights of a transgender athlete.

Boromir isekai.

By which I mean, after dying as he did in canon, Boromir gets isekai'd to another fantasy world. Preferably one of those standard anime style ones where there are inexplicable level up systems and otaku tropes. He's profoundly confused but he's trying to go with it.

as a reader who originally started with mdzs i was surprised to find that svsss had very little in the way of ghost/haunting subplots (we get the ghost of the skinner that homophobically (jk) laughs at bingqiu and exorcises itself in the extras and that's it i think...?)

... which is funny to think about, right, given the number of characters who probably died holding extremely strong grudges in either PIDW or SVSSS-verse

anyway. AU where luo binghe is killed at the endless abyss and comes back as an extremely powerful ghost for whatever reason (read: airplane-related contrivances). In PIDW, his comeback scene is a glorious tale of revenge. he possesses various people shen qingqiu spends time around, changing targets as convenient. he doesn't leave any trace it's happening, he slowly manipulates things such that shen qingqiu simply seems insane, and he drags out all of this over a looong period of time, leaving shen qingqiu to wonder what is reality and what's in his own mind. and when shen qingqiu is finally at the end of his rope, luo binghe finally deigns to possess him and... it's finally over.

then this AU's version of SVSSS starts.

the endless abyss happens, because it has to. luo binghe returns to haunt shen qingqiu, as the plot dictates. only—even when luo binghe covers every trace of his ghostly tracks, shen qingqiu... always just seems to know. his teacher who killed him with a heartless look in his eyes sees him in every body he possesses, no matter how well he acts, looking not scared, or angry, but... sad. just sad. even as luo binghe makes a wreck of his master's life—he'll do anything to elicit a response, whatever it takes to get answers!—shen qingqiu seems to just let it all happen, even when it seems like it's clearly in his power to fight back.

when luo binghe finally possesses this shen qingqiu, it seems like he has his answers at last. he finds out that shen qingqiu has set his own body to self-destruct with luo binghe's ghost trapped in it. (this facsimile of 'death' won't keep luo binghe away from the living world forever—he's too powerful for that—but it will banish him for a long time.) ah. so shizun.. really does hate me. so much so that he'd destroy himself to get at me.

so why—in the final moments they share together, with luo binghe more intimately bound to shen qingqiu than any living person could ever dream of—does luo binghe feel nothing except regret from shen qingqiu's soul?

so the whole “I can’t follow your don’t like, don’t read guidance if you don’t properly tag your fics!!” thing is coming back, and I have thoughts.

the above guidance applies even if a fic isn’t warned/tagged. ao3’s tagging system is not 100% perfect and never will be. no manual system is. you will always have missed tags or — rarely, please repeat that with me — bad actors mistagging things on purpose.

part of being able to manage your own experience online isn’t just heeding warnings or tags. it’s being able to set yourself up for success when you encounter something triggering or uncomfortable in the wild. because you will. on accident, via malicious tagging, or maybe you missed a tag or forgot to read the new warning on a fic.

you will encounter your squicks or triggers in the world. your job is to BACK OUT of those situations as quickly as possible. read the room and make a judgement call.

is the main character about to get tortured and you have a thing about amputations? when they bring out the clippers, that’s your cue to dip.

if you can’t handle reading non-con, clicking on a fic with “dark” and “dub con” tagged is a risk, proceed with caution.

the author didn’t tag [trigger] but you’re reading the fic and have a bad feeling it might pop up.

the fic has “chose not to use archive warnings” and no other triggers/warnings tagged.

people in some online spaces will tell you that if everyone tagged their fic perfectly with every single trigger (instead of using “chose not to warn” which, again, is MORE than fair to use on its own) from the get go, nobody would ever get triggered again.

but that’s just simply not true. sometimes we don’t know we have a trigger until we encounter it. sometimes we thought we could handle something and we can’t. sometimes our trigger is so specific, asking the average author to tag it ahead of time is beyond impractical.

so yes, don’t like, don’t read. but also — don’t like, don’t continue reading. know your triggers, know what topics you can’t handle, and back out as soon as you see them. know that it will happen, inevitably, and have a plan.

encountering triggers isn’t fun. take care of yourself, recharge, and remember that anytime you prioritize yourself and your own mental health, you’re doing the right thing. even if it means missing out on a fic or two.
