the funnest part of reading books is telling people the plot like its hot gossip
hey quick PSA but “reading before bed to wind down” only works if you’re normal about books btw. if you aren’t you are going to end up awake at 2:52am after finishing the whole book just trust me on this one
if you are going to need some kind of sedative for 4th of july fireworks for your pets NOW IS THE TIME TO SCHEDULE THOSE APPOINTMENTS TO ASK FOR THEM
NOT WHEN ITS 2 DAYS AWAY
I feel like to really get this circulating as it should, we need it superimposed over the picture of the turkey going in the fridge. (I can't do it I'm on my phone.)
With the 250th anniversary it's likely to be especially bad this year!
My own son??? Happy to see ME??? For real?!?
funniest response i’ve gotten so far re: grownup movies goes to the person who said “well i have a little something called ~*~depression~*~ and i don’t want to watch stressful ass movies” oh thank god i just learned im actually not mentally ill even a little as proven by my propensity for mature themes
I see this a lot and on the one hand I can understand how someone feeling bad might want to avoid a movie that'll bum them out, but they're never just saying that, y'know? There's always this guilt-riddled implication that "grim" or "dark" art is the purview of people with such spectacularly robust mental health that they're somehow immune to the emotional impact of those works. And like, this is so funny to me because it's nonsense if you think about it for longer than eleven seconds and is only really possible to posit if you already feel existing shame about not consuming different art and feel the need to personally justify it to someone who almost certainly does not give a shit what you, personally, are and aren't watching!
hokay so i was curious as a point of contrast to the Guardian list how well tumblr would do on a best 100 SFF novels list. so i went looking for one and google directed me to NPR's top 100 novels list and i'm like aight i'll just use that one keep it simple. but as i scrolled down the list i was like wait there's been no Octavia Butler at all?? which i honestly found quite offensive but i was deep into adding books to my list challenge by that point.
also the version of the list i was looking at only had 97 entries on it; i am unsure if that's a counting error bcos some of the entries are series or if it's just missing 3 items off the NPR list but i opted to rectify both issues by adding 3 Octavia Butler books on the end.
so here is my list challenge of the 97 book long NPR top 100 list but I added Octavia Butler:
NPR top 100 books except there were only 97 on the list so I added 3 Octavia Butler's on the end. why in the world the original list had...

Read through Maus last week, which to me was at its most interesting while grappling with the father-son relationship
Okay so I didn't intend for this to be the twice as old as me square but also it would feel like a waste if I didn't use Moby-Dick for anything so
I actually was having an incredible time during the first 25ish % of the book because Ishmael is incredibly dramatic and there's a surprising amount of homoeroticism and humor, and then my mind wandered in the middle when he's talking about the science and history of whales and whaling and ships (I struggle to visualize some things so maybe one day I'll invest in a nice physical copy with illustrations.) And then I locked in again toward the end.
Giving a 3.5⭐️ rating because Melville absolutely loses points for racism and whale phrenology, no matter how much it makes sense for a book published in 1851.

I finally finished another book for the bingo board!
Out There Screaming is a horror anthology featuring a wide array of Black authors that I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a diverse read! As an anthology it is a little hit or miss (the last story is formatted as a play and while I respect that it's something I've come to understand I struggle with) but I'm still thinking about The Most Strongest Obeah Woman of the World by Nalo Hopkinson.
