As Ladies Week starts to draw to a close, I wanted to thank everyone who participated! All the works made for the event were lovely, and it makes me happy to see some underappreciated characters getting some love.

As a reminder, everyone is welcome to continue to promote existing works that fit within the theme, and late submissions are also more than welcome. I'll be making a more formal archive/thank you post to ensure no works get buried in the shuffle in a few weeks, as well. This blog will remain active for late submissions, promoting other fandom events, and planning other events.

And as a final note, please consider reblogging and commenting on works with kind words to give the participants some much deserved love.

It is small and loud but well-lit. The walls are solid and the ground is steady. She is staring at the glass door, heart in her stomach, watching the scenery quickly change to metal beams and purple lights.

The Fool: New Beginnings, Idealism, Freedom

At first, I felt kinda bad about referring to Rem as The Fool, but this card really fits perfectly with her blank ticket philosophy and her belief that you can go anywhere and do anything with your life. The figure in this card is often shown as they are about to take a leap of faith, but Rem takes so many leaps of faith in her life (joining the Seeds crew, protecting and raising Vash and Knives, saving the ships) that it felt more appropriate to draw her mid-fall after she takes that leap. This composition draws more attention to her final action, her final leap of faith, which is saving the ships during the Big Fall. She falls into the light surrounded by people she saved, having no regrets and leaving a legacy behind her.

Tesla has been a magical girl for twelve years, and she has to admit, balancing it with a job and trying not to be a completely absent figure in her family's lives was proving a bit tricky.

Maybe Elendira was exactly the person she needed to show her there was more to life than burning herself out at a thankless job and fighting an unending battle by herself.

The Tower: Trauma, Upheaval, Destruction

This one really writes itself doesn’t it? The themes of The Tower card intersect both with the events of Tesla’s own life and with her role in the overall narrative of Trigun. She was robbed of her future and her personhood and her body was deconstructed and preserved in a (very tower-like) tube as if she were nothing more than a specimen. From a narrative standpoint, the boys finding her remains definitively marks the beginning of the upheaval in their lives and the lives of every person aboard the Seeds ships. Tower cards are often composed with two falling figures and I initially thought of having Vash and Knives fill those roles. Ultimately though, I decided against it because this is a Ladies Week prompt and I wanted to make sure that Tesla was the focus of the composition and that you can’t look away from what was done to her. Another traditional element of this card is the crown. When looking back at the manga, I noticed that Tesla’s brain had been removed and placed in a separate tube. You can’t remove a brain without leaving a mark, so in this composition, the crown is represented by the negative space between her split open skull. This version of a crown is not an addition or something bestowed upon her but instead is something that has been taken away.
