It’s truly amazing how easy barbers can make it look when they’re good at what they do. Just because it looks easy when Barbers do it doesn’t mean it’s easy when someone with no experience tries to do it. It’s even totally possible to mess up a baldy, let that soak in .. I’ve heard many students over the years say this is harder than it looks. And it sure is. Some barbers may get the hang of it in a few weeks and some take years to become skilled. It’s not just about cutting hair, it’s about learning the business, the service part of it. Developing communication skills and the list goes on. My point is don’t let the skills fool you. Being a barber is not easy.💈

There’s a different breed of lazy barbers out there for sure🤗 @truththebarberartist •@morcuts •The part where barbers are snoring and asleep while waiting for walk-ins just cracks me up. Some would say it’s because they work crazy hours.. others would say it’s laziness. But as a barber is there ever really an excuse for knocking out on your barber chair in the middle of the day? How does that make the business look as a whole? Could that shop still be categorized as professional? A client walks in to ask for a haircut and drool is coming down from the barber’s mouth as he snores. The client has to tap the barbers shoulder for them to wake up. It might be a funny moment for some and for others embarrassing depending on who you ask. Sure I’ve seen many barber’s fall asleep. I’ve also seen what happens when they sleep. In some shops everyone just lets them sleep and no one gives them any clients. Their tools might also get used by neighboring barbers. So pretty much they’re wasting their time. Aside from the good rest there’s no productivity. A good nights sleep helps a barber to be at their best. Imagine a world where all barbershops worked together. All on the same page, all with the same mindset of success, all with the same system. Skies the limit!! I have talented barber friends all over the world and I’ve referred my traveling clients to them many times. There’s nothing wrong with sharing clients but it’s a different scenario when it becomes stealing clients. It’s disrespectful to promote your shop in front or even inside of a different barbershop. There’s many different was to work together despite the competitiveness. Good work always gets recognized so those extreme tactics aren’t necessary.

Of course there’s no magic pill to help cure barber laziness. If it were that easy shop owners would be buying these every week. I truly believe it all comes down to understanding how the business works. It’s important to have the patience and discipline it takes to build a solid clientele. Some barbers are never taught that. I see it all the time with junior barbers. All they talk about is wanting to cut 30 heads a day in a new shop. Not understanding how long it takes some barbers to achieve that and still, some never do. If there’s no walkins and a barbers trying to build then self promotion should take up the majority of a barbers free time. Don’t wait for this magic pill to drop because most likely it never will. 💈

I remember my grandma taking me to the barbershop when I was a kid. The first thing I noticed were those big old barber chairs and the porcelain shampoo sinks right next to every work station. The smell of pinaud after shave and the sound of shears snipping were also part of my fondest memories. The clients would wait for their cuts while getting their shoes shined. All while reading a freshly printed newspaper.. Wow remember when people read newspapers? Lol.. I never thought I would teach people how to become barbers but it’s what I do best.. I always include valuable information about the tradition of the craft in my lessons. Every new student barber should know how awesome barbershop history is and how far innovations and technology have come.🤷🏻‍♂️👊🏼

Some student barbers have a tough time learning how to use razors, shears and just barbering tools in general. Not everyone picks it up instantly. Some barbers find that using the straight razor in particular is challenging. Like this young barber here quickly found out.. you can’t rush when learning how to use the straight razor.
