A Honeypot in Sheep's Clothes, Part 1: The Truth Behind Sockgate
It has come to our attention that someone in the Luigiland community has been exhibiting what can be described as honeypot behaviors. A “honeypot” is an attractive person (usually a woman) who utilizes their attractiveness to gather information from a targeted individual, also known as a “honey trap”. They lure targets by appearing charismatic and well-intentioned, extract their targets of everything they have, and after achieving their objective, leave their targets devastated and destroyed.
However, this honeypot did not enter Luigiland suddenly; it was through a gradual process that went under our radar. This is the first part of the process that went overlooked for so long.
It all began with sockgate/the heart-shaped notes. Because they were signed with R/ Free Luigi, Ashley from the Free Luigi subreddit and Discord was accused of writing them, along with Joan from the legal team for being involved. Despite her insistence of having nothing to do with it, she was harassed, mocked, and doxxed, resulting in her going off the grid in the early-mid summer of 2025.
This all happened despite the fact there is ZERO evidence proving she wrote them, nor does she hit the criteria the culprit would have:
Handwriting. Some argue her handwriting looks similar to the notes, but it’s not an exact match. You can see this by cross-comparing each individual letter. There’s also the fact that the sample was posted by a random account on Reddit, not by Ashley herself; therefore, it’s not confirmed that it is truly her handwriting.
Location. Ashley didn’t attend the February 21st court hearing, nor was she physically in NYC. How could she have given the notes to someone or put them in Luigi’s socks if she wasn’t there?
Logistics: She may have connections to his legal team, but she doesn’t have connections to anyone who works for the courthouse; some of said people are involved in the process of getting Luigi’s clothes. As for Joan, she still works for the legal team, so it’s clear she had no part in the notes either. If there was undeniable evidence that she was part of that, she would have been fired.
Motive: Ashley didn’t have a motive for writing the notes. The person who did write them knew that signing it with Free Luigi would discredit the subreddit and cause distrust in the community. Because no matter how innocent the notes try to look, they were an inherent act of malice. As the head honcho of Free Luigi, why would Ashley do that to herself, and a cause she’s dedicated herself to? It doesn’t make sense.
This raises the question that if she didn’t write them, who did? Here I propose the real culprit, who meets all of the criteria:

Something to note is that none of these are posts from her social media that show her at the hearing in real time. Yet, not only was she there, but she’s posted being at every hearing in real time since then. . .including the December 2024 one:
Why would she post being at every hearing in real time except February 2025? Perhaps. . .she had something to hide?
Regarding the logistics of how she could have gotten the notes into his clothes, unlike Ashley, she has confirmed that she has connections to the courtroom:
While she specifies that she was given his card in September, it’s unlikely that a court officer would give out his card upon a single encounter. Surely they must have had some repertoire for him to have done that, no?
Then comes her motive: to infiltrate and destroy the Luigi community. This will be expanded upon further, but sockgate was the catalyst because by framing Ashley, she discredited the largest and most powerful part of the Luigi community, causing the community to turn against each other and separate into smaller factions. These smaller factions simplified Abril’s process in sneaking her way into the community and taking control over every large-scale attempt towards supporting Luigi.
However, Abril didn’t start her infiltration right away; that would have been too blatant, and Ashley was still publicly involved enough where Abril still deemed her as a threat. It wasn’t until the later summer/early fall when she started entering the public eye and joining support projects. On her Instagram, this is her first post to be liked by a Luigi support account, on July 23rd 2025:
The reason this timing is significant? It’s because Abril made her entrance merely weeks after Ashley went off the grid. Entering a community shortly after one of its pillars stops being active, along with everything else, doesn't seem coincidental. After that, it didn’t take long for Abril to wreck havoc everywhere she went. . .but that's a story for another post.
