love island should introduce a "scheming eunuch" islander who is like a smart and completely asexual islander exempt from being kicked off or being made to participate in any challenges and they're just there to provide advice and be a sort of sounding board for the other islanders when they need a disinterested party to talk things through with. but the scheming eunuch has secret goals unbeknownst to anyone e.g. a cash prize for talking a certain couple into breaking up etc.

#i appreciate how genuine and non-judgemental this comic feels #like left one is not upset at right one for caring while being powerless #and right one seems genuinely distraught and not performative
I'm glad the facial expressions are coming across accurately! It can feel so absurd to say gosh I hope the torment maze removes some fire and rusty nails soon, but alas, sometimes that's all one can do.
this might be kind of a reach but is there a way for printers to connect to devices so that documents can be printed from them
At the local hamburger shop and they said yelled out “order 167!” And three middle school age kids yelled in perfect unison “ 6 7!” Life is sometimes so beautiful
If you reference 67 you deserve to be executed on the spot tbh
If I was king for a day the first thing I would do would be to sentence you to a life full of love and understanding.
I think there’s a really odd gap in general supply chain knowledge in which people scapegoat AI as this new devastating environmental concern, when internet data centers have been an environmental problem before that. The internet already had the infrastructure to support it in 2017, before GPT-1 was released. Data centers are not a new problem. The internet already had a large physical presence, but people didn’t really think much of it until there were new AI-related developments (and then attribute all data centers to being related to generative AI? Where do people think YouTube videos are stored? The literal clouds in the sky?)
A Makeship plushie has a bigger carbon footprint than a thousand LLM queries but it is seen as an acceptable environmental impact, because it has been deemed socially acceptable to contract low wage factories in the Global South to make toys to sell to customers worldwide at a 3000% markup, with all the profits staying in the Global North. Not many people think of that environmental impact
What's the last show you watched that you loved & what's the best book you've read this year? 💜💜
new show? i guess the pitt but the last show i watched that i enjoy and love is im rewatching the americans
best book is much harder as i don't read much - small things like these & a matter of obscenity: the politics of censorship in modern england. these make up 50% of the published works ive read this year lol
yesteryear thoughts
i devoured yesteryear in one sitting on friday night - i certainly found it to be an engaging pageturner.
but, it didn't work for me. the main character, natalie has real faith and belief - not the kind that is never shaken, but the kind that demands you rise to the occasion. those reviewers who see her as a grifter both miss the entire point but also speak to the poorly constructed world of yesteryear. the whole point of "Who is our Lord and Saviour, if not the original audience member for our lives?" is to show us natalie's true conviction, that she is determined to perform as she should until her actions and belief become one. she is clearly compelled to fit within the confines of her religious world - this is why we're shown that she is willing to give in to her mother's cajoling to go for a jog days after giving birth, why we're carefully told that it opens her stitches and worsens her postpartum bleeding. this is a woman willing to suffer immensely to become the Good Christian Woman.
however, we do need to believe the author understands what this would mean for natalie. it's fine not to specify which denomination natalie was raised in, or identifies with, or whether her husband comes from the same denomination, but there's a reason some readers have ended up so confused! burke clearly did not even bother to forge a coherent motivation or belief system for her main character. this is much of what doesn't work about yesteryear - it's a high concept novel which has not been given enough time for the characters to be fully realised. (ahem, it needs a towel thrown over it to rise). i hate to participate in the discourse surrounding authors needing to have lived experience with the worlds about which they write - i very much disagree - but burke doesn't understand the fundamentalist world and it's glaringly obvious.
which is why i can't understand the twist ending - spoilers ahead - why would you give natalie such obvious and extreme psychosis?! it pulls all your punches! give me the natalie who strives so desperately to get into heaven that she must punish and abuse her children for the good of all their souls, deliberately. (does burke understand here the possibility to include the doctrine of spare the rod?) give me the natalie who can clear-eyed demand how a Good Christian Woman must be.
500 years from now there’s gonna be some film historian who’s entire career is built off of searching for a copy of goncharov
and they're never gonna find it cuz they fucking took it off poob
