Anyone have links to information about the different kennel clubs?
Or anyone feel like sharing what they know about the different kennel clubs with me? Even ones that are considered to be not so great?
I’m just bored and feel like learning some stuff because why the hell not yknow.
AKC: Very old kennel club. Does weird things to their conformation dogs, but otherwise very reputable, go-to for Americans competing in Things.
UKC: Also good but not taken as seriously. Has been open since the 90s I think. Least likely kennel club to host events you’ll get stabbed at. Family friendly.
FCI: Confuses the hell out of me still but it’s what my CO is registered under. It’s international and it’s European I think (I’d have to look that up but alas my app will crash if I close this on edit)
CKC: Canadian Kennel Club ( Canada’s AKC tbh, they even have their own version of CGC) not to be confused with the phony Continental Kennel Club which is scammy and registers anything including designer breeds for a small fee.
Thank you!!
I just know about the UKC! It was actually founded in 1898, only 16 years after the AKC was founded. It has a much larger register of recognized breeds, and accepted mixed breeds in sports longgggg before the AKC (I think the AKC just started accepting mixed breeds for sports in the last 10 years or so). It’s also a national registry, and I’ve heard it’s decently big in Japan and Canada. Their headquarters are in Kalamazoo, MI and they have a huge yearly national show there every summer, two days(it might just be one it’s been too long since I went) are dedicated to “invitationals” where they invite the top ten of all the breeds/sports together to compete against each other, and then Premier happens directly following that where anyone can compete. It’s a great place to see super rare breeds in mass if you can make the trip.
Most of the breed standards for breeds recognized by both the UKC and AKC are virtually identical, but the UKC in practice focuses more on “working” dogs.
As far as conformation goes I think the point systems are pretty similar (but don’t quote me on that), but I know the obedience is pretty different from AKC. Different routines, different judging rules, different titles, etc. Oh and UKC offers altered conformation classes too and has for a few years now, I don’t think AKC does but tbh I don’t keep up with them very much.
It is a much friendlier club in general than most of the others, and a good place to get your toes wet if you’re new to events. Okay that’s all I can think of atm.
Aaah so cool!
I saw someone once say UKC was shit and not a real registry so I got confused and bummed because it’s like one of two that recognize American Bulldogs and since I wanted to try confo. With Bulldogs in the future I was kinda lost.
So I’m glad to get this information and know that person was wrong!! Thanks so much!!
Okay I have some thoughts and feelings about the crap UKC gets and sorry but y'all are gonna hear about it.
I have yet to see a standard for a breed both clubs recognize that isn’t almost word for word identical. I know maybe one or two judges who only judge in the UKC, most of the time judges judge both UKC and AKC. Anyone and their mother can register their dogs in either club with little to no difficulty.
And yet… I see people alllll the time shtting on UKC and telling people they aren’t a reputable club?? I call bullshit. And you know what I’ve noticed the biggest differences are in the club? UKC events tend to be cheaper. UKC puts a lot of focus on hunting trials and bench shows, weight pull, etc. The UKC recognizes a lot more breeds and the founder of the UKC bred APBTs, the FIRST dog, with the UKC registration number 1, was an APBT.
You can go in the ring in UKC in a t-shirt, flip flops, with a normal collar on your dog and still win. There’s so much less focus on the handler to the point it isn’t allowed to pay someone to take your dog into the ring. At least it wasn’t when I was showing.
In general, at least in my area, at AKC shows it’s a bunch of white middle aged people, and I’m not saying the UKC didn’t get a lot of that too, but I noticed a lot more minorities at UKC shows that’s all I’m saying.
Of course everyone has different experiences but the only snotty people I met at UKC shows were AKC people who wanted to cross title their dogs.
I’d also like to point out that most byb in my area register their dogs with the AKC and use it as a selling point.
And in the working dog world that I’m familiar with, the AKC has a bad reputation about messing with good working dogs and a fair amount of breeders breeding dogs not recognized by the AKC have no desire for their breed to be recognized. (Dutchies, APBTs, American Bullies, etc. )
It seems to me the AKC treats dogs as an abstract idea, whereas the UKC treats dogs as dogs. Does that make any sense?
I’m not saying one club is better than the other, but I think people who think the UKC isn’t a reputable club might need to take a look at their prejudices and why they have that opinion.
oh shit she’s bolt
eddies settling in well, it’s been a rough couple days but she’s sleeping better now!
sure would be nice if people kept a leash on dogs that don’t listen to them
i love autumn cus the grapevine goes deep red and glows in the sun, and the leaves make the coolest marks on the tiles!!
juno has this tiny cluster of white hairs in the middle of her face and it’s the cutest thing ever

the bees having their morning drink in the pond! they’re extremely docile and lovely little ladies.
mocha getting her kicks in the backseat of the beetle
morning chook visit! all of them sound healthy, and voddie stuck her mohawk in my camera. niqua (the angry black and brown one) is going through a hideous moult right now and she looks comical. yesterday i noticed dame edna wheezing again. her third time getting hit by this virus, and i promised myself after the cpr fiasco that next time we’d just let her go. however there’s a crazy chicken lady (she’s really lovely and i think is me in 30 years) who’s amazing at caring for them and last night we handed edna over to her. she’s gonna get so much love and care there! the other sick one, maggie, made a full recovery.
eddies sitting there looking all intent and patient and i love her and her little tail so much look how it goes up in the second pic
the breeder sent me a video of eddie! only one week left!!!!
