Itās 2 weeks after S4. Eddieās name was never cleared. To Hawkins PD, the FBI, and Jasonās basketball goons heās still the satanic murderer who āopened the gates to hell.ā Theyāre hunting him. And Steve finds Eddie hiding in the boathouse. Instead of turning him in, he says two words āGet in the car Munson.ā Steveās done watching the government bury the truth remembering barb Heās not letting them take Eddie too. So he snaps. Now theyāre on the run. Steve plans the routes, Eddie hotwires cars when the van gives out, talks them past roadblocks. Heās calm, calculated and the wheelman. Eddieā whoās just loud and , chaotic feeling nothing left to lose. But under it heās terrified Steve will realize heās not worth the risk. So he plays it louder, funnier, more reckless just anything to keep Steve from leaving. Money runs out. Theyāre starving. Eddie disappears into a gas station and comes sprinting back, cash in one hand, a revolver from the stolen carās glove box in the other. āDrive, Drive, drive!ā
Steve stares at the gun, then at the crumpled $60 Eddieās holding. āYou robbed them for sixty bucks?ā Eddie grins, wild and shaky. āBonnie and Clyde started small too, Stevie.ā Now for them itās cheap motels and fake names across the Midwest. The rest of the Party isnāt sitting still because theyāre hunting Steve and Eddie too, trying to reach them before the cops do.
One night their latest stolen car stalls. Eddieās under the dash, cursing at wires.
āShit,ā he hisses. āI donāt know stick.ā
Steveās already panicking: āYou donāt know stick?! Iām teaching you?!ā He does. And every time they peel out of somewhere, Steve mutters āride or dieā like itās a joke. Until one day it isnāt.
Eddieās got a song stuck in his head. One he wrote about Steve. Itās just him and a guitar in their living room. He messes up twice because his hands wonāt stop shaking. By the second verse, Steveās crying. Eddie stares at the floor. āItās stupid, I knowāā
Shut up,ā Steve says, voice thick. āItās not.ā
Thinking about Dustin biking over to Steveās, seeing his car out front and wandering into the backyard after knocking for a bit.
Expecting to see maybe Steve back there swimming or smoking or somethingā¦Not spray painting roses black.
When interrogated, Steve explains that Eddie had self-deprecatingly joked about how no one heās been with has ever gotten him flowersā¦and Steve took that personally.

I like a Steve who exists as āIām not a good friend. Iām not a good personā in his own head, until he meets Eddie and ends up baking cookies at 2 am and learning how to wrap a present the fancy way and heās googling āhow to give a sincere compliment without sounding fakeā because he has no clue why he sounds like THAT when he tries and he even uses Robin as a stand-in to practice being sincere and they both cringe at the way he sounds but it actually doesnāt matter because Eddie loves Steve at his bitchiest and weirdest anyway š
thinking about steddie childhood best friends. Steve's first day of kindergarten and he's feeling shy because his parents haven't put in the effort socialize him with any other kids. And now he's at school and all the other kids are running around and screaming and he's overwhelmed and wants to cry. But then he finds this first grader, Eddie, who is hanging out by himself by the fence and decides to approach him. Eddie welcomes Steve into whatever little solitary game he was playing and they get along right away. Steve is happy to be around someone who (at least outwardly) seems like he knows what's going on. And Eddie is happy that someone finally wants to play with him.

Eddie's finger is hovering over the red button. Just waiting for the right time to press it down. Casey Kasem generally does pretty good about not talking over too much of the songs, so it's a decent time to record them.Ā
Not that what America considers the Top 40 is Eddie's top anything.
But it's definitely more Steve's speed.Ā
And this is for him.Ā
Casey introduces Bob Seger, and Eddie flips the switch to record Like a Rock.
Eddie's been working on this mixtape for a few weeks. Months, really.Ā
He needs the right songs, and that takes time. It'd be easier if he could pop down to the record store and buy all the new releases, the hot music and dub them that way, but, well ā money.Ā
And there's the fact that the town still loathes him. Name cleared or not. It's easier to just lay low until the heat dies down.
If it ever dies down.
Eddie hits the record button. The play button goes down with it.
"Whatcha doin'?"
Eddie nearly jumps out of his skin. Gareth's standing behind him.
"Nothing," Eddie says, defensive. Curling in around the boombox. Like that's gonna hide that he's definitely doing something.
"Are you ripping this? This?"
Eddie can't reasonably explain why he's ripping a Don Johnson song off the radio. Not at all. So he doesn't even try.
"Why are you here?" Eddie asks.Ā
Gareth doesn't answer, flopping down on Eddie's bed. It's been hard to get used to the new mattress. He misses his old one. He misses a lot from before Spring Break. Things have changed, and he'll never be able to go back to before. It's a very distinct line in his life.
A rift.
Just like the ones that ripped through town. Only, this one was through his own life.
Eddie doesn't dig his hole any deeper. Just sits in silence, and when the song is over, he presses the button, and stops the recording. Hoping Gareth will just let this go.
Carefully sliding it out of the tape deck, and back into its case.Ā
He probably has fifteen or twenty minutes left worth of room. So, a handful of songs. Maybe he'll get this finished by the end of the year.
"Can I see it?" Gareth asks, holding out his hand.
"No," Eddie says, sliding it into his shirt pocket. There's nothing to see anyway. The tape, and the case, are both unmarked. Nobody would know what's on this tape except for him without listening to the whole thing.
Gareth pulls his hand back, making himself comfortable on Eddie's bed.
"It's for Steve, isn't it?"
The question hangs there, unanswered, until Jeff and Goodie bust into his room, shifting the focus.
Later, when they're alone again, Gareth taps Eddie on the chest with the back of his hand, ring clacking against the plastic tape case in his breast pocket.
"For what it's worth, I think he's on the same page."
Eddie ignores this statement, because it's too scary to contemplate that Gareth might be right.
Eddie holds onto the tape. Leaving room for one more song. Finishing it means he has to actually give it to Steve, and he's not sure he's prepared to do that. Even if Gareth seems to think Steve would be on board.Ā
Eddie isn't so sure.
The finished mixtape is in his pocket. Burning a hole, as they say.Ā
Another night of them bumming around, shuttling the kids all over town as winter hits. Steve keeps flipping the station. Looking for something.Ā
"There's nothing on," Steve says, and this is Eddie's window, but his heart is hammering against his chest. Fuck.
Steve surfs past 94.5 again, and Eddie pulls the tape out of his pocket.
"Here," he says, handing it over. Hand shaking, but he can blame that on the bats. Easy.
"I'm not in the mood for screaming," Steve says in a snit, and Eddie loves him. Bitch that he is.Ā
"It's not screaming. It's for you," Eddie says, screwing up every ounce of courage he's ever had.Ā
Steve shrugs, and takes the case. Sliding the tape out, popping it into his tape deck. There's a smidgen of Casey Kasem on the front, but Steve doesn't seem to mind, and when Addicted to Love comes he starts bobbing his head with it.Ā
It feels like a win to Eddie.
The next time he gets in Steve's car, the tape is still in the deck, Steve's said nothing, so Eddie says nothing. They're going to Indy, and with Robin in tow, Eddie's in the backseat.Ā
When the tape ends, Love Will Conquer All finishing it out, Robin screws up her face.
"Whichever girl made you this has got it bad for you," Robin spouts off.
Steve's eyes flick up to the rear view mirror. Eddie meets them for a second, then looks away. Like the landscaping to his right is suddenly mighty interesting.
Eddie was not prepared for the slamming on the brakes, and braces his hands against the back of Robin's seat as Steve abruptly pulls over to the side of the road.
Robin's screaming at Steve, and Eddie's about to have a nervous breakdown. Maybe he should run.Ā
He doesn't have time.Ā
Steve has yanked open the back door on the other side of the car, and is climbing in, sliding across the leather. Eddie is scrunched against the door, pinned, trapped, and Robin has turned around, looking over the headrest at the unprecedented spectacle unfolding, and this is not how this was supposed to go. Not at all.
"Eddie," Steve says. It's a full question, and Eddie nods. A quick short movement.
"Holy shit," Steve whispers, and then he's scooting closer, hands finding Eddie's face that's hidden behind his hair, turning him, lips pressing against Eddie's.Ā
Robin's making noise. Eddie can barely hear it with the blood rushing in his ears, but Steve's lips are warm, firm, and sure.
Gareth was right. Steve's on the same page.

my favorite thing about fanon Steve is how bipolar codded he is. idk if people even mean to do this but they do. this works especially well when you combine fanon Steve and canon Steve.
he's the life of the party. someone you can barely keep up with until he's not. then he's a cring mess in the corner.
he has a giant ego that makes him think he's better than everyone else until he doesn't. then he's a failure who does nothing right.
his ego causes him to get into fights they could never win.
His mind goes from being full of so many ideas he can't keep up with them. To him having no motivation, no ideas and just wanting to lay in bed doing nothing all day.
sometimes they go with the masking depressed Steve who's secretly a sad mess but a lot of times they go with him having constant mood swings. going back or forth between having high highs and low lows. over and over again until the end of time. that's bipolar.
he'll have a mental break down. then just being fine the next day, acting like it never happened. the other characters will come down stairs from comforting a Steve who was practically on suicide watch the night before to him making them a 5 coarse breakfast like it's nothing.
bipolor Steve is my favorite Steve. I just want to scream at the characters In the story that it's okay. he has bipolar. he's not pretending to be fine. he's manic. let him be manic.
especially when this is combined with the head cannon that Eddie's mother had bipolar. Eddie tried taking care of her but he was 8 so it wasn't enough. his mother was also the safer parent not the safe parent. so when Eddie finds out Steve has it he knows what to do. while being paranoid Steve's going to be like his mother.
then he's not, he thanks Eddie for taking care of him. his mother never did that she just expected it. Steve uses his manic energy to cherish him instead of protecting an abuser. in fact Steve goes out of his way to protect Eddie from other people. if anything he's over protective. Steve's ego doesn't make him think he's better than him. he never talks down to him like Eddie's mother did. it causes Steve to feel overly confident about himself, Eddie and their relationship. talking about how amazing Eddie is. how happy he is with him. how lucky he is to find someone like him.
it makes him have to swallow the difficult pill that his mother sucked because she wasn't a good person. not because of her having bipolar like he's been telling him self for years
so Steve having Bipolor helps them both heal. Eddie's never had someone appreciate him for taking care of them. he likes taking care of them. the date nights that become them laying on the couch together cuddling while Steve cries into his chest are nice and comforting.
it's not much but it's exactly what Steve needs. To just not be alone. Steve has never had someone take care of him. he's used to people thinking he's too much. too sad, too happy, too emotional.
Eddie wants to take care of someone and be cherished for it. Steve wants to be taken care of and to protect the other person. so they are exactly what the other person needs.

people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.
If there was a scene that just screams #kataradeservedbetter (and there were quite a few of them), it would be this moment where she confronts Tagah.
Here, Tagah explains the reasons he's doing this, and in response, she tells him about how Aang is "the reason this world knows peace". And the reason why I take issue with what the writers chose to have her say is that, well, SHE DOES UNDERSTAND WHAT HE'S BEEN THROUGH (AND SHE'S ALSO A HUGE REASON THIS WORLD KNOWS PEACE)!!!!
Like, wouldn't she show that she fully understands what he's been through and empathize with him due to the trauma she suffered from Fire Nation's atrocities, which may I remind you made her one of the last remaining waterbenders of the Southern Tribe?! Wouldn't she talk to him about her decision to forgive Zuko despite all the terrible things he did to her and her loved ones, and how she doesn't regret forgiving him at all and still treats him like family? Wouldn't she talk about her own struggles and experiences in helping to keep the peace between every single nation as a council representative of Republic City? Wouldn't that have made for a more impactful scene than just having her hyping up Aang for a minute straight?
And to be frank, the movie does have a big issue with not giving enough development and focus to the other Gaang members, but what makes the treatment of Katara particularly egregious is that it's indicative of the treatment her character has suffered throughout the franchise (especially following her kiss with Aang). It feels like the franchise is deliberately neglecting the qualities she has and doesn't characterize her as anything besides Aang's lover.
And they wonder why so many people have issues with how her romance with Aang was handled. Myself included!
