best advice i ever got as a writer was to pick a hobby that i hated more than writing and stick with it. iām a runner now and itās miserable and i Hate It and writing is so lovely in comparison. bonus: iām in excellent shape and running gives you a lot of time to think about writing. iāve solved a lot of plot complications while running.
This is such funny advice. Writing is so excruciating, you gotta take up Self Torture so that writing feels like a fun little break š

Koisenu Futari ep1
Let's talk about how hubris is not Wei Wuxian's fatal flaw.
I am very, very tired of this take.
Hubris is the fatal flaw of many a hero throughout history. The hero thinks of himself better than everyone, has a high self-confidence bordering on arrogance, and finally, it leads to his downfall.
Those stories are indeed an amazing exploration of human arrogance. But MDZS is not such a story. WWX is not such a hero.
Perhaps people are misled because WWX is not a character afflicted with self-esteem issues (whatever CQL may choose to portray or popular fanon may claim). He is completely confident in his actions, assured in his competence, secure in his endurance. He does not doubt his morals, he is righteous and brilliant and competent.
This is confused with arrogance, especially because much like Gui Dao, his so-called 'arrogance' is often called the reason for his downfall. And until the very moment of revelation, MXTX gives us scenes that are out of context to give us the impression that WWX's downfall was his own fault.
I have said this before, I will say it again, I will say it a thousand times. WWX's demise was the punishment the society forced upon him for having the audacity to stand up against cruelty. For having the audacity to do the right thing when the world was drunk on power and hatred and vengeance and passivity.
Now then. About Hubris.
āNot everything was because of his cultivation path. Wei WuXianās personality is quite immoral. Oneās deeds will be paid, one way or another; what goes around always comes around.ā
We have this in the prologue, which, as we all know, are rumours surrounding WWX that are systematically decried throughout the book.
A moment that WWX's apparent arrogance is shown to us is during the empathy with NMJ. His perceived arrogance is clearly shown as a mask when WWX himself says that he was joking with JC as he walks away. However, after this, he has a fight with JZX, a fight that at that particular time, seems uncalled for. JZX inquires about JYL, and WWX does not care for it. Out of context, this seems like WWX is making trouble for no reason.
But later, during Phoenix Mt. Hunt, we find out that JZX's last interaction with JYL ended with her sobbing until she almost couldn't breathe. That JYL was content to stay far, far away from him after the soup incident. WWX's anger makes far more sense, especially because JYL is described as someone who very rarely cries.
Fanon about WWX's 'hubris' is almost inseparable from his use of Gui Dao, or perhaps, more specifically, his control over it.
From the moment he comes back from the Burial Mounds, commanding resentment, LWJ confronts him about his control over it.
Lan WangJi, āSome things you cannot be able to control at all.ā
Displeasure flashed across Wei WuXianās face, āOf course, I can control it."
An important thing to realise about this moment I feel, is that when LWJ says this, WWX is just a few days out of the Burial Mounds. WWX knows he can control Gui Dao - it's not arrogance, its confidence built on the fact that had he not been able to do so, he would not have survived the Burial Mounds. LWJ is questioning his control, and WWX's anger, aside from distrust from the man he held in high regard and was so fond of, is very likely to have stemmed from his time in the Burial Mounds being very, very fresh in his mind.
Later, at two more instances, the two being Yunmeng meet and Yiling meet, LWJ expresses similar concerns, and WWX again affirms that he knows his own powers and can control it.
Now the Hubris caused WWX's downfall fanon obviously holds up two specific moments as the moments where his Hubris comes into play. JZX death and JYL being injured.
But when we think about the two instances, in fact, they are two moments that show us that WWX in fact does know his cultivation best.
First and foremost, the two instances are most notably, moments when WWX is in mortal danger, surrounded by people who want him dead, being attacked by them, and under enormous stress. In QQP, there are 300 archers. In Nightless city, 3000 cultivators wish to kill him and then slaughter the innocents he protected. Both are moments where he is vulnerable and very, very alone.
Don't for a moment forget that WWX fought in a war. Instincts like that do not disappear. Similarly, and more importantly, WWX was in a place akin to hell for 3 months, surrounded, helpless, in mortal danger.
In QQP, WWX tells JZX to stay back. I can't understand how people read that and not understand that WWX is well aware of his own control. He tells JZX to stay away. JZX, the Enormous Idiot that he is, doesn't. What he does do, is lunge at WWX. When WWX is being attacked from all sides, when he is focused on protecting himself and has already told him to stay away.
In a similar vein, WWX absolutely has no intention to hold back at Nightless City. He has been confronted with the stark reality that the Righteous Cultivation Sects would stop at nothing to kill the Wens, to see him dead. He is shot, and he himself is filled with anger and rage. However, the moment JYL appears on the battlefield, he leaves the roof, fearing for her safety. He knows that his cultivation is volatile at the time, surrounded by danger as he is.
It is enormous control he shows to calm down in those situations and calm the corpses, all at JYL's request. It is undoubtedly stemming from his concern for her, his want for her to be safe, but it shows that WWX, can, in fact, control his cultivation because he is shown doing it in a circumstance of immense pressure.
It is interesting to note that post 13 years, WWX still uses Gui Dao, and LWJ, with 13 years to grow and having understood better, never questions him on his control over it. But this is very easily forgotten about - and I absolutely blame CQL for demonizing resentful energy and actually making WWX's confidence in his cultivation seem like arrogance and pride.
Making WWX and his Hubris the scapegoat is a very easy excuse to make for the Cultivation World. But it is a severe injustice to the very strenuous circumstances he is under, as well as the trauma he has gone through.
Can WWX bear the weight of the responsibilities he takes on because of how morally upright he is? Yes. But even he buckles under the pressure when the world turns against him. This is why things are so different post his resurrection because he is not alone anymore. He has someone who stands by his side, no matter what the crowd says. He has Lan Wangji, who supports him, who stands by him, and Wei Wuxian knows Lan Wangji is there. He has a guardian, a protection he has never, ever had before.
WWX's fatal flaw is not Hubris. His demise is not the making of his Arrogance. His death was a tragedy precisely because he was punished for doing the right thing.
Very good points! And just to add on: we know that hubris was not WWXās fatal flaw because nothing about WWXās situation would have changed without it.
Hubris isnāt just pride or confidence, itās excessive, unwarranted pride or confidence. Confidence beyond oneās actual abilities. However, WWXās didnāt decide to save the Wens just because he thought he could (and it turned out he was wrong). He was acting on a moral imperative.
A moment later, Wei WuXian spoke up, āLan Zhan, you asked me if I intended on staying like this from now on. To be honest, Iād like to ask something as well. What can I do apart from this?āĀ
He continued, āGive up the demonic path? Then what about the people on this mountain?Ā
āGive them up? I wonāt be able to do it. I believe that if you were I, you wouldnāt be able to do it either.āĀ
He continued, āNobody can give me a nice, broad road to walk on. A road where I could protect those I want to protect without having to cultivate the ghostly path.āĀ
Lan WangJi gazed at him. He didnāt reply, but both of them knew the answer in their hearts.Ā
There was no such road.Ā
No solution existed.Ā
Wei WuXian spoke slowly, āThank you for keeping me company today. Thank you for telling me the news about my shijieās marriage too. But, let the self judge the right and the wrong, let others decide to praise or to blame, let gains and losses remain uncommented on. I, too, know what I should and shouldnāt do. I believe that Iāll be able to control it as well.ā
(Chapter 75, ExR, emphasis mine)
I think this section is very clear about WWXās situation here. He is using guidao not out of confidence, but out of necessity. Even if he werenāt confident about his abilities, he would still be doing this, because he has no other choice if he wants to protect the Wens.Ā
He ends this speech withĀ āI believe that Iāll be able to control it as well,ā but that feels almost like an afterthought to me. He wants to reassure LWJ that he can control it, but the main point is that heās doing it this way because there is no other way he can do it. His confidence in his success is besides the point.
Wei WuXian, āNobody can walk safely on a single-plank bridge for their whole life. It couldnāt be helped.ā
(Chapter 43, ExR)
When talking to WN after his resurrection and considering what happened in retrospect, he doesnāt blame his own arrogance. He blames the circumstances. He was forced onto the single-plank bridge because, as he told LWJ, there was no nice, broad road where he could still protect the Wens. His control over guidao was secondary to his decision to protect the Wens, whatever that required.
If WWX had not gone around telling people he could control guidao, what would have changed? If he has been more uncertain about his control, what would have changed?
He still would have had to protect the Wens, and he still would have had to do it with the only tool he had, guidao.Ā
Nothing would have changed if he had not beenĀ āarrogant.ā What killed him was that society didnāt want to let someone with his power live freely, and didnāt want to let the Wens live at all.
This could save your life.
BOOST.
Absolutely vital information to have if you live where the waters freeze over.
I especially appreciate this guy's commitment to actually showing the steps himself. That cold-shock response is a bitch and willingly subjecting himself to it couldn't have been fun.
I donāt live anywhere near water like this, but I am still memorizing this knowledge because:
* I might use it in a story someday.
* Any knowledge that staves off the dying is good knowledge.
thereās such a peculiar poignancy to saying āI miss [this fictional character]ā or āI miss [this work of fiction/media]ā
because you could always just pick up the book / rewatch the movie/TV show / re-consume the media again but itās not quite the same. itās not just āI miss discovering everything new about themā but also āI miss who I was when they filled my waking hours.ā yes we joke about a character/book/movie/TV show living in our head rent-free but when they move out, you feel their absence. they haunt you, or perhaps, you haunt yourself with the memory of what it had been like, because thereās the bittersweet knowledge that you have also changed since you came into contact with this text or this character, that they have changed you with the revelation of some experience or identification or emotional truth, and you now carry them with you wherever you go but you will never be able to fall in love with them again for the first time
some loves are long-enduring but others fade to embers, and there is something particularly heartbreaking about wishing that you could love something again as much as you used to
on translation (again), ē„å·±, "soulmates", danmei, and cdrama subtitling
aka, cyan wanders off into the weeds and lies down to be swallowed by the earth because whatever.
almost two months ago, i made a brief impromptu salt post after encountering something frustrating at the end of a long day. i didn't actually want to have a conversation about it, but then everyone kept talking in the replies and i said fuck it and wrote like 7k words in an emotional frenzy before shoving it into my drafts because i couldn't stand to look at it anymore. but hey, i came back to it and did my best with whatever the fuck this ended up being, so here, have the full avalanche of only marginally organized thoughts. take it or leave it.
if you're new here, you may want to read my last big post on translation. there are two other posts linked at the beginning of that one which provide context. they will (hopefully) give you some idea of where I stand when it comes to translation as an art/practice if you don't already know.
i am also going to be blunt: those posts were made over half a year ago and i had a LOT more patience to spare back then for anglophone cdrama/danmei fandom. these days, i can't even browse fic for five minutes without losing my temper, so like. you know. fair warning, I am still trying to be kind, but I hit my breaking point sometime back in 2020 my dudes.
if you're still with me, cheers to u mate let's go
basically: at this moment in time, I despise "soulmates" as a translation for ē„å·± in the contexts of english subtitles for danmei live-action adaptations. when CQL first came out, I was neutral-critical of the translation--it wasn't what I would have chosen, but I understood why the choice was made, and it was tolerable to me in most cases. there are even certain situations where I still think it makes fairly good sense, ignoring metatextual concerns. however, approximately *checks notes* two years later and after the entrance of SHL onto the anglophone danmei cdrama fandom scene, I've revised that opinion to no, actually "soulmates" is bad and i hate it, specifically for how it's been picked up and misconstrued in anglophone fandom spaces and the consequences thereof. i swear to GOD if i had KNOWN how much psychic damage I was going to take because of this translation choice, I would have salted and burned the earth under it at the outset!!!! hindsight is 20/20 (ha) or whatever!!!
i know that that's a controversial take, but if you wanna hear me out, i shall continue forthwith beneath the cut
anyway I found out last night that the voice actor for Yan Yujin is the same as the voice actor for Wei Wuxian and Iām losing my mind just a bit

About wangji's evolution - I believe he grew up to be what he was going to be - he didn't evolve any extra than anyone else would during such political upheveal. I find that when characters like him (quiet, stoic, introvert, highly moral) have an arc, it is exaggerated & attributed to the other character ( extrovert, life of party, ect). While the other way never happens. That is, no one thinks the chatty/naughty one has changed for better due to the silent one - any change is about "love".
To me, LWJ didn't really "change". More importantly, his morals are the same. He only gained experience and because of this, he matured, got stronger and wiser.
What's different in present timeline is that LWJ expresses himself more. For example, he now talks back to WWX and is openly playful. In the past, WWX just didn't know these sides of him because he didn't see them. LWJ also wouldn't show much. I guess that's related to the forehead ribbon too, with how it means to regulate oneself. In a way, present timeline LWJ is unrestrained when he's with WWX.
What did change were his feelings for WWX. When they were studying in Cloud Recesses together, he wasn't in love with him. So maybe that's why he can seem impatient to some (but considering how awful WWX was, he was very patient to me).
His self restraint improved though. LWJ learned from his past mistake (kissing WWX without his consent) so even as WWX gets in bed with him attempting to undress him, or tries to bath with him, he stays still as a mountain.
And I wanna say, although WWX was initially shocked by LWJ when he was reborn, in the end, after everything happened and they got married, he says to him (chapter 113), "You really havenāt changed at all."
Lol about WWXās awfulness! He was so annoying sometimes!
I too think LWJ simply matured, not turn into new leaf as some people seem to insist.
You probably have a meta explaining LWJ timeline of falling in love? Because rest of fandom ( and cql lwj) have a different opinion and I am intrigued to read yours! I am slowly making way through your meta tag so probably not read that yet.
Well, a 16 yr adolescent vs 30 something man - yeah self restraint changes.
I haven't written a timeline of WangXian falling in love yet, but I think LWJ fell in love (or in other words, realised he was in love and accepted his feelings) when they were in XuanWu cave. It's hinted by the bite of the arm, that represents a chinese proverb about a lifetime oath (X). LWJ may have liked WWX before that but that's when he chose him as The One. MXTX also summarizes chapter 53 with "Wan-Jun wrestling out of the Yao-beastās mouth, falling in love through a piggyback causing turmoil to the maidens heart". It's when LWJ sings WangXian to WWX too.
beginnerās guide to danmei

i have a disease calledĀ āi believe i will have the love i have been reading about all these years one dayā
Minor quibble but I wish that more people would write LWJ more like his canon teenage self rather then the post-13 year termpered one.
I feel like people forget how impulsive the guy was- the kiss in the forest, or like biting WWX multiple times in the Xuanwu cave.
Like I know the joke is 'haha repressed Lan' but he really did have trouble expressing himself! and that was a genuine problem. it's not an uwu cute thing or some sort of gimmick. He really genuinely needed to work on this aspect of his behavior. Nobody is saying he needed to fake his character or turn into a smiling chatterbox, but being able to communicate is necessary and honestly a basic courtesy to people who haven't done aything to you.
And he wasn't upset about liking a dude, he was in denial because WWX often broke his Sect's rules and on the surface was someone he should not have liked! at all! the problem was that he did like him and he struggled with the rules of righteousness he grew up with vs. the guy who actually did the acts of righteousness.
I could be wrong I guess but a lot of people write LWJ as if his pining was obvious to everyone except WWX when in fact it was obvious to no one except Xichen. He had a frozen face, he had trouble expressing himself and did not know how to handle intense emotions.
Post-13 years LWJ is much more steady and tempered man and cannot be copy pasted onto his teenage self. Like even in fics where WWX gets together with LWJ during earlier and events change, so many fics just switch to post-13 year LWJ's steadiness and understanding of WWX and the world. While the fluff is enjoyable I always feel like we kinda miss out on prime teenage LWJ material who does not have the same control and does not know how to communicate as well and angst and humour that can come with it.
LWJ isn't perfect y'know and his journey to be a better man is fascinating too. He had flaws he worked on and sometimes i wish more fics would have him actually mess up and make mistakes so he can learn and grow just like WWX did and also a chance for WWX to show the same support and love like LWJ always gives in fics.
I feel like LWJ's journey is the most fascinating thing about him. Some people is so distracted by the supposed 'love at first sight' aspect that they don't see how much he privately overcame because life taught him lessons through WWX.
I see so many takes about him - like he's boring (he's absolutely one of the most fascinating characters in the book)
Or he's a poor pining teenager being pushed and teased. Idk how people miss a lot of WWX and LWJ both contributed to the misunderstandings between them. They were both clueless teenagers with vastly different personalities. (ngl I twitch every time someone brings up that MianMian thing and says WWX is stupid for the comment because - LWJ risked his life for her and was acting all huffy bc WWX interacted with her- just what was the boy supposed to think?)
They're like the most epic enemies to friends trope to exist. Both were ridiculous and communicating poorly for the first half of their lives. Let LWJ be a sulky, offended teenager that he had been. He was constantly vacillating between teenage horny gay and asking his heart 'you chose this????'
It is hilarious.
ALL RIGHT!!! all right all right all right, I guess my first ē ēę¦ LYB meta is going to be about Lin Chen, because I love him, and I think heās one of the most important characters in the show despite the fact that heās there for oh, maybe nine episodes out of fifty-four
keep this image in your thoughts, Iām gonna come back for it
and really, it all boils down to this:
Lin Chen is Mei Changsuās friend, not Lin Shuās.
