SVARGA DJIVASNA {Bird of Paradise Pose} | twice born
HOW:
From Uttinasana (Forward Bend Pose) separate your feet about shoulder-width apart. Bend your right knee and take your right hand down in front of your right foot. Bring your left hand behind your left hip, to your right upper thigh, for a half bind. Reach your right hand behind your right leg, interlacing your fingers or grabbing hold of the right wrist. Root down through your left foot, possibly adding a slight bend to the left knee. When you’re ready, lift the right foot off the ground, coming to stand, and keeping a bend to your right knee. Keep opening through the chest, and standing tall. If you have the stability in your body and flexibility in your hip, extend your right leg straight out to the sky. Stay in the pose for 3-8 breaths. To come out of the pose, bend the right knee, bringing it down to the mat and releasing your bind. Repeat on the opposite side. SECRET MESSAGE: Renewal
Similar to the balance and interdependence of Arda Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose), Svarga Djivasana requires the balance of masculine and feminine. It also embodies the transformation of the Huma bird, the Bird of Paradise. A blog post I read put it into the best words:
“Rooted into the earth is the leg of my masculine nature: my stability, my strength, my stamina; and lifting up to the heavens was the “wing” of my feminine nature: my creativity, my flexibility, my compassion. I felt grounded like a fire consuming itself, but I also felt the flight of my other leg, rising anew from the ashes like the phoenix. And just like the Huma bird, the Bird of Paradise, I felt the sensation of being “twice born”, neutralizing the polarities of my masculinity and femininity into a balance of paradise.”

ARDHA CHANDRASANA CHAPASANA {Sugar Cane Pose}
HOW:
From Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose), begin to bend your free leg, bringing the heel to the glute With your free hand, reach for your free foot and grab hold of your ankle As you engage into your glutes, pull the free heel closer toward your bum and feel the hip flexor opening Keep the chest wide, as you breathe deeper into the pose Stay in the pose for 3-8 breaths. When you are ready to come out of the pose, release your foot and move with control into Uttanasana (Forward Bend). Repeat on the opposite side.
SECRET MESSAGE: indulgence
Ardha Chandrasana Chapasana is a yummy stretch that opens both the hips and the heart. It requires the powerful connection of the sun and moon energies, just like in Ardha Chandrasana. With your strength and interdepence of these opposing forces, this pose variation requires you to be fearless and indulgent.
If you have the courage to play in this pose, be generous with your breath and movements, allow yourself to feel spacious in the sweetness of this challenging pose, and celebrate it when you do!
Practice Ardha Chandrasana Chapasana the next time you’re feeling brave, and playful. Be open physically and mentally, as you explore your breath, and your body. Have fun!
