Movies in The Vampire Chronicles, by Character

Lestat

Lestat watches both Apocalypse Now and Death in Venice in the prologue of The Vampire Lestat. In The Tale of the Body Thief he watches Suspicion through the eyes of the old woman he kills in the opening chapter. Later in the same book, he and David are talking on the cruise ship, and Lestat asks David to summarize Body and Soul for him to kill time. Lestat doesn't actually mention the movie The Maltese Falcon or having watched it, but mentions in Blood Canticle that he has had ambitions of playing the lead character, Sam Spade, since reading the original story in Black Mask magazine.

Louis

Lestat mentions Louis being a fan of three movies in The Tale of the Body Thief: The Company of Wolves, La Belle et la Bête, and The Dead. Armand describes him watching Romeo + Juliet from outside of a video store in the rain in The Vampire Armand. Fun fact: The Company of Wolves is by Neil Jordan, and was included in the series before he became attached to the 1994 Interview with the Vampire.

Armand

Daniel describes Armand watching Blade Runner and Time Bandits in The Queen of the Damned. Pandora describes Armand watching Shakespeare movies, including "new films with Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh and Leonardo DiCaprio." in Pandora. Romeo + Juliet, staring DiCaprio, is also referenced by Armand in relation to Louis, and Branagh's Hamlet is discussed in Blackwood Farm.

Quinn Blackwood, Mona Mayfair, and Michael Curry

In Blackwood Farm, Quinn talks about Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet with Rowan, Michael, and Mona. Later he talks to Michael about what movies Mona has watched, and they talk about the three Powell and Pressburger movies: his two favorites, Tales of Hoffmann and The Red Shoes, and Black Narcissus.

Quinn Blackwood and his teacher Lynelle

Quinn's teacher Lynelle first introduces him to movies when he's a child, and he says that they watch Amadeus, Immortal Beloved, A Song to Remember, and Tonight We Sing. She is also the one who first introduces him to The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann.

Lynelle rents movies from "Robocop to Ivanhoe," and occasionally his mother Patsy joins them. She likes The Crow, Dark Man, La Belle et la Bête, and Coal Miner's Daughter, but she gives up on watching movies with them after The Seventh Seal.

Aunt Queen

Quinn speculates on what he'll find Aunt Queen watching when he gets home, and speculates it might be Dragonwyck, Laura, Rebecca, or Wuthering Heights. When he gets there, he finds out that tonight's movie is Gladiator. Fun fact: Ridley Scott was one of Anne Rice's top choices to direct the film Interview with the Vampire.

What is the origin of your blog name?

In the Prince Lestat book they reference TVC books as “Vampire Scripture”. I thought it was a cool concept, since the books are ground breaking in vampire culture, the first written recorded story- history. They also are imprecise, personal recordings non-archival history, like some of the most famous religious scriptures, so I liked it.

Also since this was supposed to be a book-only blog, and every version of “vampire chronicles” “coven of the articulate” was taken, and this one was available everywhere, it kind of fit perfectly.

What is your ‘I will always order this” food?

Caprese salad.

What’s the last thing you hyperfixated on?

The Vampire Chronicles. For over a year now, it does not show signs of slowing down.

What’s an oddly specific thing that brings you joy?

Getting into an ocean that is full of seaweeds, that’s a perfect sensation.

What smell instantly makes you happy?

I agree with @yewfae , vanilla. Also turmeric (cúrcuma).

What’s something you loved as a kid that you secretly love now?

That awful Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick. I am not sure it counts, because as I got older I refused to rewatch it in case I hate it now, since I really loved it as a 7-year-old. So it lives in a limbo xD, because I sitll love it (as a memory), but I wouldn't dare watching it again, just in case, since everyone seems to hate it.

What’s your phone wallpaper right now?

Just a black background. Particularly, the black image that appears in the Wikipedia entry for “black”. This is kind of sad xD.

Are you a morning person, night owl, or something else entirely?

Very morning person. I love getting up at 5 am. It feels like being in an apocalypse movie, the world is yours.

If you work, what is your work profession? And do you like it?

Teacher. I love it.

my favorite story is that Anne Rice’s original title for Memnoch the Devil was A Dark and Secret Grace, because the book was originally going to feature a human protagonist, and at the end of his journey through Heaven and Hell, he would declare, “I have received a dark and secret grace”

except then Lestat insisted he be in the book instead, which means that the end now features Lestat telling God and the Devil to fuck off before clawing his way out of Hell—losing an eye in the process—and screaming at people outside of a cathedral that “God and the Devil are idiots!” until the other vampires force him into a quiet corner.

so obviously that title wasn’t going to work.

One of the funniest parts of Queen of the Damned is when Armand and Daniel see Jesse at the concert hall, and Armand immediately recognizes her as Talamasca, and Daniel is all, "That's a cool word, what does it mean?" And Armand is just like, "It means Lestat is a fool!"

Armand totally knows exactly who and what the Talamasca are, and what they do, and he is just so fucking done. Lestat is going through with his concert and they're probably all going to die, and now to add insult to injury, the Talamasca are there to record everything and probably ransack their vampire corpses for their collection afterward, and he's 100% over it.

I also love that Daniel is just obsessed with how cool the word sounds. Dude is so high on being a vampire for ENTIRE DAYS after being turned and it's so great.

Notes:

Written for the VC secret gift exchange! I got vampire-scripture on tumblr, and their prompt “Armand and Nicki and art”. This was such a fun fic to write, thank you so much for the excuse to write more of these two!

The title is taken from the poem Standing Female Nude by Carol Ann Duffy.

The fic itself is set some time nebulously 4-5ish years into their decade running the theatre, and for anyone who wants the playlist that accompanies this fic, then that’s on youtube and spotify.
