the more i think about the new professional women's baseball league the sadder i get. groundbreaking in many ways, but by aggressively marketing themselves as groundbreaking, their silence on the most obvious exclusionary issue in sports today is all the more egregious. without any kind of explicit statement or policy in the matter, all that's left is speculation. there's rumors of trans women being quietly turned away from tryouts. it's a can that they're kicking down the road for as long as they can, but the worst part is that i can't entirely blame them for trying to avoid the issue as long as possible. the truth is that if they allow trans women to play, it will open their fragile and fledgling national organization up to unsurvivably expensive lawsuits from an unfriendly federal government and its extremely resource-rich allies, not to mention the uniquely dangerous threats and harassment that they will surely get from a full third-to-half of the country: .it's a pattern of attack deployed against school districts and athletic orgs all across the country, over and over, even in "safe" states like mine. this women's league is not the MLB and surely does not have the means to weather this level of targeted hostility and surely does not have the means to guarantee protection to their players, especially any trans ones. meanwhile, banning trans women from playing, it makes a very small and already unprofitable section of the population upset. it depresses me that, if i was trying to make the first ever racially integrated women's baseball league in american history, it's a no-brainer for the sake of lasting more than one season. and it depresses me that the most that i can hope for is that any official of the organization would just honestly admit to these circumstances when asked instead of trying to weasel out of it. or, yknow, instead of actually being glad to exclude us anyway.

So! This is a perfect case study in situations where you should be wary of misinformation.

Take a moment and ask yourself, a project like this requires a lot of time, money and dedication of resources, why would scientists dedicate that time to something that could just be done by a tree?

The answer is they wouldn't. So that means this claim requires further investigation!

This project is called LIQUID 3, and it's not meant for cities with wide open spaces, it's meant for cities like Belgrade in Serbia. These cities are densely populated and heavily polluted, to the point where pollution actually chokes out current trees and makes creating green spaces difficult.

Liquid 3 was a PhD scientists answer to these problems. The microalgae tank is intended for spaces where you either:

Don't have enough space to plant full trees, or

Don't have enough time to plant trees and wait for them to grow up.

The tank is extremely efficient when you consider the amount of space needed compared to the amount of CO2 turned into oxygen. The tank can operate throughout the winter. And most importantly, it can be quickly set up in areas that desperately need relief from air pollution NOW not in 10 years when trees are done growing. Children currently suffocating on polluted air can't wait for trees to grow, they need to be taken care of now, and Liquid 3 is one of the ways to take care of them. Depending on the species of microalgea used, a number have shown a pretty amazing capacity to pull heavy metals out of the air which is something trees can get choked up by.

The tanks aren't just tanks either! Liquid 3 have solar panels placed on top, they have lighting and mobile phone charging, and they work as public benches. The designers of it want to encourage green spaces where there's room, but where there isn't room or time, Liquid 3 can step in. Realistically, this isn't a replacement for trees. It's replacing boring metal city benches with new, cooler benches that also clean the air (and have at least some heating during the winter).

Not only that, but the microalgea that grows is native to Serbia and all that microalgea has a ton of great uses! It makes for great fertilizer, compost, wastewater treatment, cleaner biofuels and even for helping create new tanks for further air purification. They only require a quick algae divide once a month, and the produced algae can be carted off to where ever it's needed. This makes them effective solutions for areas that can't sustain complex installations.

So yeah, there's actually quite a lot of places that would like these. Lots of people currently breathing in terrible quality air would much rather have their boring city benches replaced with really fucking cool algae tanks that clean the air and can be used to help create + sustain future green spaces in cities. I dunno about you, but I'd take that over a dumb metal bench any day. Put these at every bus stop and I'd be delighted.

Serbian here living in Belgrade! This is all true and I've actually seen some of these around the city a few times. They're amazing at what they do and really cool to watch up close because you can see pretty swirling inside them. It's not only functional but aesthetically pretty nice as well!

New research pushes the earliest known origins of dice, gambling and the exploration of randomness back six millennia and into North America

This is SO cool—archaeologists have proposed, based on a study of historical dice from multiple different Native American communities and traditions, that these wood and bone artifacts from 12,000 years ago are also dice. It’s a fascinating article and makes a very reasonable case. Which means that, in North America, dice pre-date the previously-known earliest Mesopotamian/Indian dice by 6,000 years! And have been in pretty continuous use since then.

As the scholarly article linked in this writeup says:

This finding is all the more significant because historians of mathematics frequently identify the invention of dice and games of chance as a crucial early step in humanity’s evolving discovery and understanding of randomness and the probabilistic nature of the universe [...] This is so because dice throws produce “characteristic random or patternless sequences of outcomes” to which “the calculus of probability applies straightforwardly” (Franklin 2016:1). Consequently, the making and using of dice represent humans’ first known efforts to intentionally generate, observe, and record streams of controlled, random events (David 1962:ix) and harness the probabilistic regularities that appear in them (such as the so-called law of large numbers) to power games of chance.

And the archaeologists hypothesize that the games weren't just played for fun—rather, they were structured ways of barter, trade, and interaction between nomadic groups who didn't have a lot of close contact but met up for specific gatherings and festivals. Rather than market-like bartering, games of chance were a mediating activity that put people on an equal footing, "allowing them to interact economically and socially for their mutual benefit." Which is absolutely fascinating! A peek into the social complexity and social lives of people who lived 12,000 years ago.
