my name is caysen, and i'm 19 years old, gay, and nonbinary for what it's worth. i'm working three jobs currently, and i'm still really struggling to make ends meet. i'm behind on rent for three months, as i have been struggling to pay the hospital bills from a suicide attempt in january. my landlord has come to me and, while she is waiving late fees for my rent payments, she has stated that once the eviction moratorium lifts at the end of the year, the owner of my house may consider pursuing legal actions if i do not pay my accounts in full.

i have been skipping meals as much as possible to help stretch money more, but it's not enough. i currently have $350 in my account, and i have to pay this month's rent and my medical bills within ten days or i will be reported to credit agencies to have a formal collections placed on me to pay in full.

i need another $250 by october 12, 2020 or this will happen.

my rent is $530.

on top of that, i still have utility bills, a phone bill, and credit card bills to make payments on. i have had to drop out of classes, as i cannot afford tuition and my family cannot assist me.

even working more than full time, i am still drowning every day, and any help you can provide would mean the world to me. winter is coming soon and in northern nevada, it is extremely important to have warm clothing, and while i can make my own hats and gloves, i cannot afford to buy winter clothing such as coats, shirts, or pants.

I have seen this sentiment popping up way too much, in too many fandoms. And while, on the surface, I can kinda see where people are coming from—it sounds good in theory, that is till you really think about it—I personally think this way of thinking is harmful to queer actors and the queer community overall.

1. Stating that gay roles should be played by gay actors infers that straight roles should be played by straight actors.

2. It also demands that actors publicly come out about their sexuality/sexual preferences, when they may not want to, in order to “earn” the right to play a certain role.

3. It ignores the fluidity of sexuality. Not everyone realizes they are queer in their teens. It’s not a black and white, you are or you’re not type situation. For some of us (and speaking from my own experience as a bisexual woman I think this is particularly true for bi/pan sexual people) it can take us awhile to realize we’re not as straight as we first thought... it’s complicated, damn it.

4. It’s called acting for a reason. An actor doesn’t need to be a serial killer to play one, or have actual superpowers to play a comic book hero... so why does an actor need to be gay or straight to play a gay or straight character? And before you say, “because chemistry!” I’ve seen quite a few straight people have amazing chemistry with their same sex on screen partners and vice versa for gay actors playing straight roles. (John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness anyone? He had just as much chemistry with his female costars as he did with his male costars... and for the record, I adore him for it!)

Corporation support is not the source of social change, it’s the visible indication of it. A mall covered in rainbow flags with ‘pride month sales!’ is nothing that makes LGBT people more accepted, nor do tweets from companies about supporting the BLM protests do anything to stop police violence, but they DO show the shift in public mindset. Corporations don’t take risks. They don’t make bold statements that they feel are unpopular or will lose them money or support. They’re a litmus test for when a statement or symbol that has been taboo becomes a commonly held belief. 

When a corporation makes these kinds of statements, it means that the people out there fighting every day for these movements are having an effect. Their fight is causing a change in social perception to the point where businesses who carefully choose every single thing they say can post about solidarity with protesters and feel confidant that they are saying something that represents the feelings and beliefs of the majority. A mall being covered in Pride flags is a sign that the country will accept a mall filled with Pride flags. That those working to make social and cultural change are succeeding.

One thing I’ve not seen talked about at all is Armondo and Isabella’s fight. Isabella tried to make it seem like Armondo has done something equally as bad as her. I was expecting to find out he also cheated on her but he just got in a fight with his boss over her cheating. That’s not equally as bad in my opinion. Especially since Roger looked completely fine when we saw him so obviously he didn’t get beat up supe bad.
