Martian Successor Nadesico (Deconstruction semi comedy anime of composite Gundam/Macross/Getter Robo. Talented chef who happens to have a biomechanical key that allows for piloting robots is co-opted onto Not White Base by his childhood friend and now they have to navigate the Earth - Jupiter war together with the rest of the crew while also avoiding the EDF's attempts to get back their experimental ship.
Vandread (During a military drill, a vicious gang of cannibal pirates attack and kidnap a trio of misfits. Except the "vicious gang of cannibal pirates" thing is actually just military propaganda from their home planet, its actually just aliens. And by aliens I mean women. Because their whole home planet is only men. Guess we're going to have to unpack all of that. Also the robots combine and they aren't supposed to be able to do that.
Goddanar (So you wanted to watch super robot show and an ecchi show but couldn't decide? Try Goddanar today! ...its really not that great, and has plenty of flaws, but the actual backdrop is fairly fun with giant insect aliens preying on the darkest emotions of humanity.
Outlaw Star (Jury is constantly out on "does this count as mecha?" and the answer continues to be... sort of. The grappler ships do qualify. Extremely sci-fi space cowboy. Our protagonists find a girl in a box and it turns out that girl is the central processor for an experimental spaceship that was SUPPOSED to be delivered to the space Yakuza. But people aren't parts, and they are not giving her back.)
King Gainer (Tomino's not-Gundam show based loosely on a series of French post apocalyptic novels about trains. Misunderstandings lead to misunderstandings and our protagonist is swept up into a cross-country trip to prove the world can recover. That robot can dance too.
Aura Battler Dunbine (Never really got into it, but the designs are absolutely stunning. Yet another Tomino work, this time about giant robots who are bugs in a high fantasy setting. Some people really loved it?)
Magic Knights Rayearth (So you wanted to watch a magical girl show but not That magical girl show. Or that one either. Yeah, or that one. And now you're about 1/4 through and OOPS, turns out its also mecha! Three girls are transported to another world where willpower rules reality and must work together to save the land. Pretty typical premise, just handled very well.
