Makeup Essentials for Beginners #2 - Powder
Summers can get reaaaal hot in Nepal. Your face gets oily… you use blotting papers but it still doesn’t make a difference half an hour later… I get it. I used to go through compact powders like a crazy person during the summer (I did use it in the winter but not so much). I thought it was just my skin. Turns out, its just the weather and I felt the need to keep blotting no matter what I wore that day to keep my face from being too shiny/oily looking. For this, another MUST-HAVE for any makeup beginner is a powder. It can be just a blotting powder, or if you want more coverage, you can get a foundation in a loose powder or compact form. This will help make your face look even and will remove the oil and shine.. and it also comes in handy when you have a compact in your handbag to touch up your makeup. So ready to hear about my experience with powders?
My favourite high-end powder foundation/ blotting powders I’ve used so far have been:
Bare Minerals Original Loose Powder SPF 15 - Medium Beige
I feel like bare minerals owns it in the loose powder department. I don’t even know how to describe it. It feels so smooth and soft and you just feel really great and your skin feels great after using this product. I have used this and the Bare Minerals Veil and I love it. However, I don’t like their powder concealer that much. I think having pretty heavy dark circles comes with having dark skin :( That’s why I need a heavy duty concealer and a powder one just doesn’t do the trick !
(US) Available at Sephora : $27
(UK) Available online (Amazon, bareminerals.co.uk) : £25
MAC Studio Careblend Pressed Powder - Medium Dark
I am in the shade Medium Dark. My sister mistakenly got the shade Medium Deep for herself, which is slightly darker than this one. If this happens, don’t worry ! You can use it as a bronzer for contouring your face… More on that later ;)
This product is really fine and it blends easily in the skin. I love this powder and have nothing bad to say about it. However, there are many drugstore alternatives which perform much better and which I think are just neglected because people just want to buy high-end makeup.
(US) Available at any MAC counter/ Store : $25
(UK) Available at any MAC counter/ Store: £20
Speaking of high-street makeup….
My favourite high-street/ drugstore powder foundation/ blotting powders I’ve used so far has been:
Revlon Photoready Powder - 020 Light Medium
I am telling you girls, u CANNOT go wrong with this. I have combination skin (with an oily t-zone) and this powder is amazing! I never used foundation and even now I rarely do. This powder gives you amazing coverage. You can just put on some moisturizer, pat on some concealer on your under-eyes/ blemishes, powder this on, and you are good to go ! This evens out your skin so well I have no words to describe how awesome I think this product is—- and not to mention HIGHLY underrated !!! Why hasn’t it gained more popularity? Well in my opinion, Revlon can “do no wrong” in the makeup business and maybe I am biased like that. (On an added note, I did not really like the Revlon Photoready Concealer. Read about it here.)
(US) Available at Walmart (or any other drugstore I guess) : $11
(UK) Available at Boots/ Superdrug : £11.29
Available in Nepal
Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder- Natural Beige
Also, the Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder is one of the best powders out there in the drugstores
(US) Available at Walmart (or any other drugstore I guess) : $3.97
(UK) Available at Boots/ Superdrug : £3.99
So as you see, this is a really cheap but highly effective and well-loved powder. There must be some reason why everyone loves it so much right? … and it’s not gonna break your bank too ! That’s always a plus point !
I really hope this post was helpful for the beginners. Powder was the fourth makeup item I started using, (It’s weird that I remember right? lol) and now I cannot live without it. To find out what my first makeup item that I used was, come back next week and there will be a brand new post waiting for you ! :)
Stay beautiful girls !

Makeup Essentials for Beginners #1 - Concealer
Well you are now at a point where you feel like you want to wear some makeup ! You have no clue where to start and what to buy !
If you’ve never used makeup before, you might not want to experiment too much and keep things simple. Start with neutrals and then build up so that it won’t be as bad even if you mess up. This series will talk about essentials for your face, eyes and lips to help you towards the right direction… So let’s get started !
When I started applying makeup, I started with just a black eyeliner, eyeshadows and a pressed powder. Still, I felt like my face never looked that great. Then someone pointed me towards the direction of a concealer !! Never did I know such a thing existed. It has honestly made my life so much better. Even now, when I don’t want to wear a face full of makeup, I just dab on some concealer and I’m good to go ! Good concealers conceal really dark circles (like mine) and also any spots or blemished you might have. This, in my opinion, is a MUST-HAVE beauty product in any kit.
My favourite concealer so far has been the BOBBI BROWN creamy concealer. I am obsessed with this concealer. I have never tried anything so great and I’m on my third one right now. This has just the right consistency. It is not too dry and also not too liquidy and goes on pretty smooth.
At first, I got the one with the setting powder as well, but it just didn’t work for me. It just made my under-eyes white and other setting powders worked much more than this one. In the end, I just ended up using all of the concealer and the powder remained untouched. To avoid this wastage, I would suggest getting the single one.
(US) Available at Bobbi Brown, Sephora : $23
(UK) Available at Debenhams, John Lewis, House of Fraser, Bobbi Brown, Harrods : £ 18
Another concealer that I really love, is the MAC Select Moisturecover. It is a liquid concealer, but it does the work really well, specially for the under-eye area. I am in the shade NW30 and NW 35 depending on the weather and area I want to apply it.
These can be found at any MAC Store around the world.
US: $18
UK: £ 14.50
If you don’t want to go for the pricey concealers, you can go for different drugstore alternatives. I heard many good reviews about the Revlon Photoready concealer and decided to try it out. I have a very VERY dry skin so it didn’t work quite as well on me as it did on people with normal to oily skin. I think it would work best on those skin types. However, to make it work on me, I had to moisturize my face reallly well for the concealer to glide on smoothly whereas others didn’t seem to have that problem. I am the shade 004 Medium.
Available in Nepal too.
US: $ 8.99
UK: £ 6.49
Another great drugstore concealer thats really cheap is the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. I discovered this with the help of FleurDeForce, one of my favourite Youtubers and it really is a good concealer. It is a thick liquidy concealer with a great consistency and is great for under-eye dark circles as well as blemishes. I am in the shade 4- Deep.
Available only in the UK (although it might be found in ebay too) : £ 4.19
I hope this first post on concealers was very helpful. Knowing about concealers was life-changing for me and now I don’t have to worry about my blemishes or dark circles anymore !!
Stay beautiful girls!
