for me, this only works if cleradin and byler are ultimately endgame. i’m such a fan of mike the brave and mike wheeler being accidentally pulled into the other’s universe and experiencing the Other Will’s but only if it helps them learn more about themselves in relation to will in order to get back home to their True Will

will the wise is mike the brave’s north star, so when he winds up in 80’s hawkins to find will byers, he’s of course enamored with him, but knows it’s not his True Will — but it’s mike the brave’s duty as will’s paladin to protect him, so he shows will byers love and care like he’s never seen before

mike wheeler can’t function without will byers, so when he ends up in the medieval fantasy world with will the wise, he freaks out for two reasons — he’s without his True Will, but he’s with the childhood fantasy version of him that mike has only dreamed of. cue mike wheeler nerding out over will the wise’s powers while he’s just only sort of tolerating it. bonus points if will the wise unashamedly flirts with mike wheeler to make him nervous. but as they work to figure out how to reverse the body swap, will the wise learns that this mike, while not his True Mike, is true to another will, and just needs a bit of a push to accept himself and his love

bonus points for when the body swap happens but mike wheeler is sent back sooner and finds mike the brave flirting and standing awfully close to will byers and mike, who’s now aware of his feelings after his time with will the wise, flies into a jealous rage surprising both will byers and mike the brave — and so he sends mike the brave home with gusto, finally confessing his love to will byers

byler gets together, and cleradin returns home to each other, as soulmates do

au where will was never found in s1 so in s5 when everyone is in the upside down they each split off to explore and when mike is alone someone runs up behind him and puts a knife to his throat and he's terrified for a second but then he turns around and recognises that will byers glint in the eye even though he's a grown man now and he just softly says "will?" in his will voice (which he hadn't used in years) with the most extreme heart eyes ever and will just drops the knife and goes "mike?" with the exact same expression and they just stare at each other for a moment and then hug each other so so tight and just cry into eachothers' arms
