lauren from living well with schizophrenia becoming a keto influencer was not something i saw coming. on one hand i don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that some people's bodies can have unusual responses to certain foods and that this can have neurological effects; celiac disease would have sounded ridiculous too before it was discovered. but based on what i've read, the research into the link between ketosis and psychotic disorders is very speculative and has had few clinical trials. based on the content she's putting out i would be very surprised if she wasn't being paid by the diet industry to make these videos. and it's disconcerting that the number of "i sent your videos to my son to convince him to go off his meds" comments she gets have not given her pause.

the annoying health insurance people accidentally sent the forms to my parents' house and my mom read my autism test results -_- we have not spoken about them but today she called and recommended i take this adult workplace social skills etiquette class thing.

maybe it's because i also have other issues but the way masking/unmasking is presented as a clear binary with masking being bad and unmasking being good is hard for me to conceptualize and apply to myself. some situations i'm nervous and clumsy and apologize a lot, and other situations i can talk eloquently about an interest and come across as very confident. and i'll tailor my vocabulary as best i can to try to sound polite or professional, but still neither social mode is a deliberate fake self

i seem to be in the minority in disliking writing approaches that emphasize "this character is [member of marginalized group] and they're just like everyone else. neither they nor anyone around them ever thinks about it." i don't feel "represented" by it, but more importantly, it feels like a waste of fiction's capacity to build empathy and explore the complexity of another person's unique personality and life experience. i recently read a tanya titchkovsky book about disability studies and she described the condescension in the "see the person, not the disability" mantra. she writes that this approach implies that disability is not only separate from but threatening to personhood, rather than part of the range of ways to be a person. i was struck by what she described as approaches that aim to avoid offence simply by avoiding encounter -- approaches that emphasize "diversity" in a flat, feel-good way rather than granting space to how different people experience the world differently. i feel similarly about writing that treats people's sexuality, race, religious background, etc. as merely incidental.

i am the first to admit that the humanities and social sciences have a lot of bullshit and are prone to buzzword soup that either means nothing or makes horrible arguments (like when queer theory gets used to argue that supporting the material rights of LGBTQ people is somehow regressive), but wholly dismissing these fields and the entire study of sociology or arts or language or ethics or history or politics etc etc as worthless is just mindblowingly asinine.

yes there are people making bizarre paper-thin claims in these fields, but they’re also areas of study focused on learning the skills to make an argument, reason it through, and support it with evidence. some people – or even a significant number of people – failing to achieve these skills doesn’t mean those skills are no longer to be valued, nor does it mean that everyone who has dedicated those their lives to studying these things is operating out of cynical pretention or naive emotionality.

it is a fact that analytical reading skills, knowledge of different cultures, an understanding of ethical implications and responsibilities, and insight into sociological dynamics are all vital areas of knowledge in which many experts in the hard sciences are ill-equipped. medical interventions can be more effective if doctors' skills were paired with an understanding of the role of sociological factors in health, illness, and treatment. emerging technologies can be developed more safely when scientists and engineers consult ethicists and historians about possible unintended effects.

any subject takes a massive amount of time to learn well, and it’s easier to blow off entire fields as worthless than it is to take the ego hit of recognizing that even if one is “smart,” other people also have knowledge one doesn’t.  

plus acting like no one in STEM makes ego-fueled batshit claims regarding things they know nothing about is transparently untrue.

yesterday i went to a friend's house and we played old first generation pokemon games together, and it was the most fun i've had in ages. she kept asking my advice for finding towns and what pokemon to catch and what moves they learned. very exciting for these thousands of hours of lifelong fixation to finally come in handy.
