So I'm a Bangtan and One Direction fan too (hi!) and talking to that T Swift ask directioners can act like no other act has had the same problems. Bangtan have dealt with a lot of shit too. Its a boyband thing. You don't need to put down women or other bands to pretend the boys are the most victimised. They have all had a bad time and we can love them and know their experience isn't new.

Mhmmm! 

I think sometimes our fandom can be very...oppression olympics. I think people have invested in this idea of One Direction (and particularly Harry and Louis) being, as you said, incredibly victimised and they don’t deal well with being reminded that unfortunately its actually the entire industry. Which does not mean its fair or excusable, but I really don’t like seeing people shitting on artists who are women or POC and pretending they haven’t had struggles, just so they can pretend One Direction are/were in an entire class of their own oppression wise. 

BTS is a good example. They’ve taken nearly a decade to get any traction in the United States, and its not because they aren’t talented or charming or don’t have good music. It’s primarily because they aren’t white and mostly don’t speak English, so people truly can’t be fucked with them. Imagine working as hard as they do (they train like 24 fucking 7 and had a notorious one month break in the last...nearly a decade), and knowing people won’t even bother with you because Asian. 

They also get worked to death (you only have to watch Jimin performing through his throat closing up or Jungkook performing through what looked like heat stroke to feel awful for them). They also have politics and restrictions placed on them. Because they are Korean they often have to tread carefully when talking about eg China - like that one time RM accidentally didn’t mention Chinese soldiers in a speech or something and it went very badly. They are from a country which is definitely not LGBT friendly and I suspect a few of the members are LGBT and god knows THEY CANNOT come out. They aren’t allowed to publicly date anyone like Jungkook was in a shit tonne of trouble for having lunch with a woman one time and was publicly humiliated. 

Whether its BTS or Kesha or Rina Sawayama (not even being nominated for a Brit because she’s originally from Japan, even though she’s lived in Britain for a very long time), lots of artists deal with discrimination and closeting and assault and being overworked. 

One Direction are no exception, but they are also NO EXCEPTION. We don’t need to say they are they most oppressed band in history or Harry and Louis are the most victimised people in the music industry to know that they have had an awful time. We don’t need to completely ignore the existence of intersectionality or POC or women in order to have a reason to love the band.

Also if it was about Eleanor it would have been named ‘Walks (My Dogs)’.
