I've seen a lot of fic and fanart depicting Ice smoking since TGM came out, and while there are lots of possible reasons for this, I did wonder if it had anything to do with his cancer.

I think I've mentioned this before, but not one but two of my uncles have/had throat cancer. And it is for this reason that I know that the vast majority of throat cancers are not smoking-related. They're from HPV.

So statistically, Ice's risky behavior is giving head.

absolutely one-hundred percent it's his self-sacrificial nature & how unwell i am over it.

this man is reckless through tg86 and tgm, right? like, no argument, bends the rules more than a little in order to get the right outcome/prove what he's capable of in the air/etc etc etc. and then in tgm, it's just. it's so heartbreakingly beautiful to me?

probably because we know he lives. if he'd died during the mission, i think i'd be a lot angrier about it HA. but as we have it canonically, maverick is ready to go in tgm. he's in darkstar and ready for it to be the last flight he makes so that the people he works with still have a place to keep this up. pushes past mach 10 because what does he have waiting for him on the ground, anyway?

begs ice to send him on the mission knowing that someone won't come back from this. literally says "please don't ask me to send someone else to die. send me."

maverick is so ready to atone for his sin (self-perceived, anyway; feeling responsible for it) of goose's death, but he's inadvertently surrounded by people who trust him despite all rational thought and support him.

idk i'm just. i'm really emotional and incoherent about how maverick spends so much of tgm quietly desperate to go and then the kid he never wanted to burden with any of this is the one that grabs him forcefully by the shoulders and yanks his sorry ass out of that abyss.

it's what my dad would have done.

because goose never would've blamed maverick the way maverick has blamed himself. and maybe it's okay, it's finally okay, for maverick to believe that himself.
