This isn't just bad reading comprehension. It's a conceptual failure of the framework of justice people are using.
You see, Jax is a bad person. A murderer*. An ABUSER. She's karmically irredeemable. She's going to hell. So the way the show "should" portray this is by punishing Jax.
There's just one slight problem with this in the context of The Amazing Digital Circus: Jax spends the entire show miserable as a direct result of her own actions. Jax is constantly being punished for her bad behavior, and it almost never improves the situation!
Jax spends the entire show miserable. The only episode Jax has an unambiguously good time is episode 6. An episode where Ragitha attempts to sabotage Jax's relationship with Pomni because she fears Jax befriending Pomni will lead to someone's death. Where Jax successfully sabotages her relationship with Pomni after falling back into bad habits. Which she falls back into after she's reminded of what she did to her mother when she shoves Pomni. And as a result of this, she attempts suicide in episode 7.
Jax is repeatedly told by the people around her that they hate her. Jax gets assaulted. Jax gets tortured multiple times. Jax never gets to enjoy the wiskey sour she wanted because everyone in the circus voted made her vegan, and Caine temporarily ALTERS HER BRAIN to make her unable to eat animal products in response to this.
Jax successfully alienates everyone in her life except Pomni, to the point where Gangle and Zooble destroy a representation of her head with a baseball bat. Her two best friends are dead and she blames herself. She hates her body. She hates being a man and the fact she isn't one. She hates herself so much she chooses to die.
And at the end, she gets the cold comfort of living just long enough to realize she was lovable. That suicide was the only mistake she TRULY couldn't come back from. And judging by the mural, she even gets buried as a man!
Hurting Jax more doesn't unabuse Gangle or help Gangle heal from her trauma. It doesn't bring Ribbit or Kaufmo back. It won't make Ragitha or Zooble or Pomni or Caine's life better. And it was never going to make Jax a better person. We're still left with three dead bodies, an abuse victim, and four people with Jax-shaped holes in their lives.
The reality is, everyone's life would have been improved if Jax suffered less. Jax was failed by the Circus. Which implies that Ribbit and Kaufmo's abstractions and Jax's abuse of Gangle have to be thought of not just as a result of Jax being a bad person (which they are to varying extents) but as a systemic failure of the Circus.
And this may be obvious, but I think the story about a HOMELESS DEPRESSED TRANSGENDER TEENAGER COMMITTING SUICIDE is probably making some statements about systemic failures. If you expect a straightforward condemnation of said character, that's a failure on your part.
