Red berries ONLY
I’M CAN’T BELIEBE.
That noise of disgruntlement at the end!
Fun fact! Chickens are attracted to the color red! This is why, when chickens are kept in large groups, they have to trim the point of their beaks, bc if you don’t chickens will peck a bleeding chicken to death. The other solution for this issue is putting red googles on them so they see everything as red!
Thanks for listening to my chicken Ted talk
Oh fuck off. Abusive strategies used to manage behaviours caused by intensive farming is not a ‘fun fact’. Both of these are lazy alternatives to providing an enjoyable life for farmed birds bc it’s cheaper. Its a way of maximizing profits and minimizing expenditure. Capitalism impacting on the autonomy of animals is not fun fact.
Debeaking is unnecessary. The fact it’s not used on organic hens or any chicken outside commercial rearing/farming (so those with higher welfare standards than barn and caged) and the fact DEFRA is looking to ban it is fair evidence that major pecking issues are caused by shit lives and debeaking isn’t needed. Debeaking causes chronic and acute pain, difficulty eating, drinking and preening (good amount of studies about pain linked here for further info, literally hundreds of others on google).
Red goggles are also ridiculous. They were invented in 1903 and haven’t been used large scale since 1973. They’re fitted either with a cotter pin piercing the nostril (illegal in UK since 1982) or hooks into the nostril. Idk where you’re getting you’re info but it’s seriously outdated (as in, they’re now collectors items and not actually used x x ) and you’re advocating a practise that literally got abandoned bc it was viewed as less humane than debeaking which is like. Seriously saying something. Idk if you’re thinking of peepers/bumpa bits/blinders or something but again, similar welfare implications and can’t be used for more than 2 weeks. Further reading x x
If feather pecking, cannibalism and bullying are an issue in a non commercial flock do you resort to removing their ability ti fully use their beaks or alter their vision? Of course you fucking don’t. You look into why the chickens are behaving that way and you fix it. Instead of removing a body part so they’re physically unable to do these behaviours, you address the reason why they’re doing these behaviours. Basically you literally just provide enrichment, good diets and like. the bare minimum in terms of husbandry. x x x x x x x x
If I thought my chicken having a food preference would lead to people presenting abuse like it’s fun and quirky I would never have posted it. Franky it’s very disturbing you view it that way and fuck you.
The idea that chickens naturally will peck each other to death over the colour red so we have to mutilate them is absurd and its terrifying that people wholeheartly believe mutilation is beneficial to these animals
If animals sls that naturally live in flocks are acting hyper aggressive it is their environment and care that is the problem
But that response really does showcase how normalised the neglect and abuse of farm animals is
Its so normalised that we see their extreme stress behaviors as normal because most of us have never seen these animals reared in a healthy, natural and/or enriching environment
