redoing this post for the third time because we received some really bad news last night.

my girlfriend and i are getting kicked out of our house in two months. my girlfriend made the unfortunate mistake of telling our roommate we planned on moving out next summer and now she’s forcing us out of the house months before we were ready to leave. we’re already living in a very small conservative town where we are constantly harassed for being gay.

i know times are so tough right now but if anyone can help us it would be so appreciated. we’re trying to raise enough money to cover moving costs and our bills while we look for jobs.

Ive been a huge fan of this channel (and both of these bois) since the start of their year long journey with Unus Annus. I kept putting off doing some fanart thinking ‘eh I have a year’ and holy shit the channel is literally gonna end in like a week what the FUCK where did this year GO.

this morning NASA abandoned their mars rover Opportunity (aka Oppy) because it (she) got hit by a storm on Mars and it knocked her camera and wheels out and her last words to the team were “my battery is low and it is getting cold”. I know she’s a machine but I’m devastated. Oppy is the one who discovered water on Mars. RIP oppy ily space baby

This is what’s great about NASA and it’s what’s great about people. These are world-class engineers. When they sent a rover to another planet they could have easily looked at it as just another scientific tool. But people don’t do that. We can and will get emotionally attached to the most inanimate of objects. We can and will anthropomorphize anything. And frankly Opportunity’s camera mast looks like a little face with eyes and everything, so why not?

So they started calling it her.

They nicknamed her Oppy.

They told her to take a selfie not long ago.

After 15 years of Oppy flipping the double bird to her original 90 day life expectancy, when a planet-spanning dust storm finally knocked her out and she stopped responding to the engineer’s wake-up messages, they started playing music for her.

And after 8 months and almost 1000 unanswered wake-up messages, when it was finally clear that Oppy was never going to wake up, the last thing these world-class NASA engineers did for their little rover on another planet

Not only was the performance done on 20 minutes notice, she had no rehearsal and simply heard Pavarotti’s rehearsal once on a goddamn tape player and just listened, nodded and said she could do it. the most famous opera song in the world, on one of the biggest nights for music in the world, no rehearsal, and she just went out and did it.

More backstory: she’d performed Nessun Dorma at another event two days before, but got asked to take Pavarotti’s slot and basically instantly accepted— WHICH HAPPENED AFTER THE SHOW HAD ALREADY STARTED. (The producer didn’t hear he wasn’t coming until about 1:50 before he was supposed to be onstage.) She got a recording of Pavarotti practicing, and got to sit with his conductor and rehearse until it was time for her performance (the originally scheduled one) and for a bit of time afterwards. She didn’t know that there was a 30-strong backing choir or 50-piece orchestra till she saw it on her way down. What a queen.

If you’re noticing she sounds a little more rock and a little less opera on that last little bit (which is a combination I want more of tbqh), it’s because those two kinds of singing require very different skills. I actually remember learning in one of my college music classes that some opera singers will not eat before the performance because even the tiny bit of their torso cavity that would be taken up by a full stomach is too much, and for some opera singers gets in the way of the fucking insane amounts of air they need.

Aretha was an absolute queen, so when I say this, understand that I am not disrespecting her in any way (quite the opposite actually):

She was trained in gospel and R&B. Not opera. Which requires extensive and specific training of its own.

She pulled that out of thin air AND IT’S A FUCKING ARIA SHE, BY RIGHTS, SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE TECHNICAL SKILL TO SING. I can find no record of her ever training for opera, nor of her ever extensively performing it—although she sang this specific piece a few times afterward, she had no operatic repertoire or, that I can find, even an opera instructor.

She sang this with about 20 minutes’ preparation, no formal rehearsal, only one previous performance of the piece under her belt, AND WITHOUT THE FORMAL TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE.

To call her a queen for this is to damn her with faint praise. This is, without question, the performance of a lifetime.
