esp. since she and her prairie dog babies are actually in the larger Squirrel family, and the family behavior just kills me (in the very best way)

critters in the snow 2/6/26: red, grey, and fox squirrels

An hour ago it was a whiteout in wintry Michigan, a whopping 16F*

With a break in the snow, the word went out that the big biped (me) had put out more food. Time to feast before it all gets buried when the snow begins again.

Spotted: A flock of sparrows descends on the picnic grounds while a squirrel loads up on the black oil sunflower seeds I put out. The black oil not only helps them pile on a little extra weight, but it can also help them with their thirst as an alternative to eating freezing snow for water.

Also spotted: One of the Kirby family of fox squirrels. Many of my fur babies come from across the allée or down farther into the forest. I have to imagine it takes some body fat to come all the way here and back. It must be a net positive for them as far as food-in / fat expended on the long sprint back to their nests.

Paulina Possum has four hands. So does mama Paulette.

Their hands are weird. Really weird.

Possums are by far the strangest animals I’ve ever seen irl. They walk so strangely — walking on four hands rather than feet. Just a truly bizarre creation of chance.

I’d always wanted to see a possum hang by their tail. I assumed it would be from a tree. But hanging by their tail in the seed bin is pretty much just as good.

When Paulette, the mama, shows up at a little past the 1/3 mark, you get to see how possums climb and exactly what their feet look like - in action and everything.

Bun Bun in the snow, 2am

This shot was taken at 2am (?!) and it was actually this light out. All I’ve done is bump up a wee purple tinge to make Bun Bun’s markings pop. It was overcast, no moon, yet somehow it was this bright.

Birds actually choose to live in Michigan and I cannot grok that. This little junco chose the windbreak of my grill even over the sunflower seeds. And yet still willingly lives in Michigan in winter. Whyyyyy? Peer pressure?
