""Why you ask?" he says, and the translation computer is across the room by now, so I primarily hear it in his own voice, an octave below where it would usually be. He taps the question-particle with one claw, bop bop, into the flesh of my arm. "Want big strong sexy Eridian to hold you down?" Tap tap, again, and I can almost feel the point of that claw through the xenonite. I think it feels sharp."
Look I did say I'll take a break but then @twwings wrote T’hy’la and it's literally the scenario I've been thinking about since phm came out, down to Rocky pinning Grace's thigh to the side. What am I supposed to do, not draw something for this fantastically written, funny and really really hot fic?? Please.
Also yes whatever I forgot the xenonite suit but hey look at all those nice pencil lines and crazy perspective
nothing has made me more aware that i apparently live in a bubble than the internet's reaction to grocky. in the star trek and star wars fandoms, humans in relationships with aliens is completely commonplace in both fandom and canon. and then project hail mary gets big and a bunch of people who seem to never have encountered scifi before are shocked and appalled when it turns out people are shipping ryan gosling with the rock guy. they're saying it's BESTIALITY and when you tell them clearly rocky's not an animal, he can talk and he does engineering, they're all "it doesn't MATTER, a human doing anything with a nonhuman is bestiality"
and i mean, that'd clearly be the case in the real world, if only for lack of options - we haven't met any aliens yet and the neanderthals have sadly left us. but in a world where sapient aliens exist? come on now. like is this your first science fiction story ever. be so fr with me
The American left feels like it essentially operates as a subculture that fills a similar niche for many young people that music subcultures like punk or goth would’ve a few decades back, offering a space of socialization around shared values.
But that’s not good enough. The left shouldn’t be a clique of the likeminded, it should be a fighting force that seizes victories. We need to be as integrated into the everyday lives of working and oppressed peoples as capital is if we wish to win and winning during an escalating climate apocalypse means survival.
I was thinking of a very specific dynamic for Thomas and Vincent post conclave
Vincent is having a very hard time with this whole pope business, he's a man of action, of getting his hands dirty, not of politics and speaking and making statements to thousands if not millions.
He's also very lonely and isolated, many popes had friends and established relationships when entering the papacy, they knew who to trust and had some personal support.
Vincent has none of that, enters it all as a stranger to everyone, if he had friends he left them behind in every place he's been and gone, never really put down roots anywhere and in the Vatican it really does come back and bite him in the worst way possible.
Vincent becomes very despondent and depressed, manages to function because he always has but he sinks deep into this darkness that comes out when he's alone. Finds solace in prayer and that's all he does alone, no hobbies no none work related conversations, just praying and meditating, his personal prayers become more and more desperate and sad.
And then Thomas is there, faith restored, vows to himself to protect this pope and support him in any way he can. And Vincent really admires Thomas and relies on his advice and help but he doesn't feel that it's within his right to impose on Thomas in any personal capacity, Thomas is a senior member of the cardinals who frankly should have been pope instead of him. So he doesn't let Thomas in on his troubles. And Thomas is well meaning but he's a tad oblivious to anything emotionally related that isn't smacking him right in the face.
Eventually he would notice Vincent's depression when it becomes too much for him to hide, maybe he gets thinner again, maybe he starts the day with red eyes after sleepless nights of praying while crying quietly.
And when he figures it out all hell breaks loose. And by hell I mean Thomas Lawrence becomes the most mom friend you've ever met. He is not going to leave Vincent alone. He starts chatting with him about random books he's enjoyed, asks him about music he likes, gets him a personal cell phone to send him pictures of turtles. He offers to sit with him for post work tea time, just to chat and relax while upholding the sacred rites of the English Tea Ritual. He turns up his humor capabilities to 11, suddenly cardinal Lawrence is a court jester at every meeting? And he has English humor so 80% of the curia is baffled by him. But not Vincent. Vincent cracks small smiles at first that eventually turn to full blown laughter, Vincent starts taking more walks outside so he can send Thomas pictures too. Vincent starts listening to music again so he can talk about it with Thomas. Thomas slowly but gently pulls him up, enough so that one day he can tentatively offer Vincent to help him, be an ear to his trouble, be a shoulder he can lean on if he needs to.
And Vincent breaks down crying at that. He clutches onto Thomas and cries and cries and it's ugly and full of snot and cathartic and he's not alone anymore.
Thomas can't carry his papacy but he can carry Vincent
the delicate art of cracking someone's egg honestly has a lot of parallels to trying to help a friend who you think might be in an abusive relationship
the egg prime directive is stupid as fuck because yes, you don't just assume based on incomplete information that your friend is in an abusive relationship and then try to force them out of it, but you don't just fucking do nothing either. you have to employ finesse
what is even conclave about bro
Beyond his art, Neal Adams is rightfully remembered as an eternal champion of creators’ rights and for the part he & his work played in the Comics Code revision of ‘71 but his contribution to John Stewart’s creation is – I think – a rather underrated aspect of his career, especially as it’s such a great reminder of the kind of person he was. Taken from an interview conducted and transcribed by Allen W. Wright over at the Green Arrow: Bold Archer fansite, here’s Neal discussing John’s beginnings (x).
Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.
Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.
There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.
i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.
I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case
My one boring tip to anyone in their 20s is to resist the temptation to rot in your room every time you get a free moment. Dismiss any neuroses you have about going outside and "being perceived". Be a dictator about it, plan your hangouts like they are binding commitments. No excuses! Go to the bar with your friends. Be kinda hungover at work. Socializing is like exercise; even if you don't feel like you want to, you should still do it because it's good for you.
it’s never a normal temperature anymore it’s always some fucking bullshit
I need you young people to know it was almost never this hot when I was a child. Millennials and Gen Xers are all nostalgic and excited about summer because it was about ten to twenty degrees cooler to experience it back then!
I cannot express to you how FAST it has gone. I grew up in a world that does not exist now. We're starting on the path to reverse it, globally. You might not know how much solar has EXPLODED in the last decade or two. It's gone from a side thing, a weirdo novelty that was just Not Viable... to whole countries investing in infrastructure. but we have to keep fighting big oil and fascism everywhere we can in order to keep on this road to a new better less scorching burning earth.
But any time you wonder wtf the weather is doing- THIS IS NOT NORMAL, NO. THIS IS NOT WHAT IT WAS EVEN TWENTY YEARS AGO.
Even Gen Z probably remembers the era of a summer news cycle that wasn’t 50% forest fires. I’m in my mid 40s and I don’t think I was ever once aware of a forest fire impacting my life or being a newsworthy story before my mid-30s.
xena gave us trans drag lesbianism as a treat
There are layers to this. Earlier in the episode, Xena discovers her secret while they're sharing a locker room. A woman she has got naked with turned out to be trans. It's the exact scenario terfs are always fear-mongering about, but Xena just shrugs it off.
Also, the kiss was a big deal not just because it was gay but because the trans actress was HIV positive. They wanted to show the world that you can't contract HIV just from kissing someone. Bear in mind, the AIDS crisis was still fresh on people's minds in the 90s.
Happy Pride.

OK I keep seeing people refer to the Michigan parasite outbreak and then others will chime in “it’s in my state too!” so to clarify this for everyone it is a NATIONWIDE outbreak reported in 31 US states as of today, July 12th 2026. There is no reason to assume it is not present in the rest of them
NBC News’ tally shows at least 26 states have reported cases of the parasitic stomach illness, as health authorities race to find the source
The CDC is tracking cases but they are significantly lagging behind the states on numbers (their data is weeks behind) so it’s probably going to be most effective to check your individual state’s infectious disease tracking.
This is a parasite that usually causes about 3000 cases of illness per year in the USA, Michigan currently has reported about 2900 (the confusion about “Michigan outbreak” is because Michigan is the first that caught an uptick in cases and has been very proactive about trying to trace them). Last official update from Massachusetts was 18 cases here centered in Greater Boston. The CDC recommends NOT assuming there are no sources of the parasite in your state even if no cases have been reported.
It isn’t an unknown illness but it is an unusual quantity of cases, and the fact that they haven’t been able to pin down the source after weeks of tracking is what makes it particularly concerning this year (harder to contain).
Wash your hands, wash your produce, cook it ideally, and advocate for farm workers to have access to safe and hygienic toilet facilities
People keep tagging this with “washing doesn’t help” or like “don’t eat ANY vegetables” and stuff that is either exaggerated or not realistic. Read the article it has actual public health guidance in it
when a woman points out that sports fans hate women and sports leagues hate women and athletes hate women people will often go "just watch women's sports" and it's a stupid fucking response every single time
women should be respected in every single sports space, none of these structural issues are solved by just ... sending them somewhere else + the way people say this always comes across as demeaning; watching womens sports is worthwhile on its own, it shouldn’t be prescribed as exile for women who notice that the wider sports world hates them
