sometimes people on here talk about "accountability" in a way that shows they think that the person they've decided is in the wrong can't actually do anything to redeem themselves other than like. suicide.
Things Accountability IS:
Apologising for the harm that you've caused.
Trying to change your behaviour.
Accepting that not everyone will forgive you and they don't have to.
Things Accountability ISN'T:
Wallowing in your guilt until you think of yourself as nothing but bad.
Accepting an overly distressing punishment for your actions.
Twisting yourself into knots to make sure everyone knows how disgusted you are by yourself.
Other people can't move on if you never do.
If you're demanding eternal groveling and evidence of remorse and evidence of changed behavior with no opportunity for any behavior to actually change because the transgression you're so upset about just happened and everything is still raw and ongoing, you're not demanding accountability. You're being cruel.
There are several conversations before this where Lavellan and Solas grow closer, but I still think the conversation after she returns from the time-travel incident feels especially meaningful.
Lavellan does not simply say, āYouāre special.ā Instead, she tells him he is ānot most people.ā And somehow, I think that is exactly the kind of compliment that would reach Solas in this moment.
She even says she appreciates him not being most people.
Because after waking from uthenera, Solas must have known the loneliness of not being most people. He woke into a world that no longer remembered the truth he knew. When he tried to tell modern elves about the past, about the Veil, about being FenāHarel, they did not believe him. He was even attacked for it.
So when Lavellan says she appreciates him not being most people, it feels like a quiet reversal of that loneliness.
The very thing that has isolated him ā his difference, his distance from the world around him ā is, for a moment, treated as something precious.
She is saying she is glad he is not like everyone else.
Glad that he is, in some quiet way, himself.
Maybe thatās a bit much, lol. But still.
And Solas, of course, answers by lightly deflecting with a joke about Orlesian fashion and magical surprises. But I think the softness still lands.
On the surface, it is such a quiet flirtation, carried through an intellectual exchange. But underneath, I feel like it touches something much older and lonelier in him.
yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.
I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.

your month, your mini cat!
June 1st
Listen, marketing-as-exploitation discussions aside, Rainbow Capitalism is, has been, and continues to be the canary in the coal mine of social acceptance for the queer community.
If youāll all pardon my Americentrism for a moment, the amount, visibility, and flamboyance of Pride merch available in clothing, home goods, and comestibles stores is a DIRECT reflection of how safe it is to be queer in public in the United States.
How? Simple. Out groups arenāt profitable. If youāre not āacceptableā in the current social climate, big franchise businesses will not market to you. (Prime example - Look how quickly Target dropped all their Pride merch after having been wall-to-wall rainbows every June for almost a decade prior.)
Sure, capitalism sucks and being viewed as an exploitable marketing demographic isnāt a fun concept.
HOWEVER.
The grim truth is that being normalized enough to be considered profitable by corporations IS A GOOD THING in terms of the barometer of social acceptance.
Same thing goes for smaller businesses that throw kitschy Pride events or even just put a token rainbow flag in the window or somewhere inside the shop. Thatās a level of acceptance that DID NOT EXIST thirty years ago, and I can tell you because I was there.
The fact that we can scoff and bitch about being an exploitable marketing demographic nowadays means we have made GIGANTIC strides since the 1990s. It also speaks to the fact that the drive and the conversation surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance are continuing. And getting louder.
You can be cynical about it if you want. But I will take a store that puts out lip-service rainbow merch over a world that pretends we donāt exist any day of the week. Because that will always mean something.
Sincerely, An Elder Queer
