sometimes i forget that the Rangers’ iconic mottled cloaks are literally just cameo.

i love headcanoning that they have like, cloaks adapted to snow, to sand, stuff like that, and that that’s a normal and known thing and not some special stuff for specific missions that would be in any way surprising to a full fledged ranger. sure they’re mostly supposed to operate in wooded areas, but it’s not like they never leave elsewhere? does it not snow in araluen?? anyway camo cloaks <333

Take off your glasses and make a fist with a small hole in it. Look through it like a telescope and it should become easy to see. I think it works via that principle.

you can’t write this and then not say that will has 50 parents. halt didn’t know what the hell he was doing, he brought that baby to the next gathering and got 50 different people stepping up to babysit, raise the kid, teach him, get everything he needed.

every gathering since halt adopted will, someone (most likely multiple someones) would have a new handmade toy for him. his favorite toy is a weak toy bow and arrows (dulled points, obviously, make out of wood).

To be fair, who would expect such a cocky warrior to go for a borderline suicidal move like jumping in front of a charging battle horse?

Ever thought about how haunted the apprentices must be when they first kill a human? Wargal, Kalkara, those are monsters, but actual humans, albeit bad, can you imagine how haunted they must be from the image? Knowing that they took a life. They know that it's their job, stopping evil, but that doesn't make it any easier

The apprentices get nightmares for weeks, if not months. Will first does that in the war, it's a war and he has it in the Skandia PTSD package, but what about the others?

Gilan has always trained with dummies. Has fought in the war, against Wargals. But the first time he stops a bandit, it's different. He gets nightmares for weeks, he wakes up in the middle of the night, sweating, with his eyes wide in fear, heart racing. He can't believe himself. What he's done.

Halt knows what it feels like. He knows Gilan gets nightmares, and he takes to coming to him every night with a fresh cup of coffee and talking with him until he falls back asleep. Nothing of this ever makes it any easier though.

I think every apprentice goes though that. They're human beings and they suffer, their conscience suffers. It never gets any easier, this part of a Ranger's job. Any thoughts?

The first royal ranger book shows maddie go through this and it and the sequence leading up to it both felt like a gut punch. The tone shift to a scared little girl being hunted down and after defending herself having to acknowledge that she just killed a man hit so hard.

Things Traditional Publishers Can Learn From Fanfiction

tagging systems are a big draw for readers. both for content/trigger warnings, and for genre information. knowing the tone of the story and whether the ending will be happy/sad/satisfying is a deciding factor for many readers.

word count: especially important as digital books become more common. books are more accessible when readers have a way to check both the total word count and the chapter word counts.

there is a big audience for short stories featuring characters from book series. It used to be more common for authors to release short stories or anthologies in between novels, with shared characters & settings. (Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, P.G. Wodehouse, and the Rumpole series all did this.) Unfortunately this has fallen out of practice, but as fanfiction has shown, there is still a huge reader interest.  

there is a demand for expanded universe content, particularly for content with a different format or atmosphere than the original canon. audiences like variety; e.g. fans of high-stakes/dramatic stories are also interested in seeing their favorite characters in low-stakes/humorous situations. these stories are not inauthentic nor do they pander to the audience; they simply allow audiences & creators to explore characters through a different lens.

similarly, there is a big interest in spin-off content featuring secondary characters. audiences see a great deal of potential in supporting characters, with most fandoms having clear “favorites”. short stories expanding on such characters have a great deal of marketing potential, and allow writers to explore expanded canons without any risk of altering primary characters/storylines.

Give audiences accessible, satisfying stories in a variety of formats.
