#newblogpost “Home interprets heaven Home is heaven for beginners.” — CHARLES HENRY PARKHURST I remember the first couch my husband and I ever bought when we first got married. It was floral print, mauves and greens. It was our first attempt to create a home that was comfortable and uniquely ours. We were so proud of that couch and to have a space that we could call our own. The couch was too big for our small first apartment, which ironically worked in our favor, since we didn’t have much else. We soon figured out that if we each turned the opposite direction facing each other on that couch, we had plenty of room to stretch out completely. We spent many nights up late watching movies and eating popcorn, heads turned sideways and body’s long, comfortable and content. We were so young, determined to live the life we had both dreamed about, together as a couple, but we had no clue how to create that life. We struggled to recognize the value of having a place in this world filled with people who restore, encourage and mend the bruises of each day. #newblogpost It seemed like a good day to have an outdoor lunch. I picked out two of the softest pieces of bread that I could find from the almost two-week-old loaf in the pantry. I should have been on my way to the grocery store in response to the sad state of my cupboards, but instead I made my way out to the front porch. I had been doing that a lot lately, responding differently to the needs around me. I had spent a big chunk of my life in a state of emergency towards every situation and guilt would seize those vulnerable and rushed moments like fire, burning away all of the joy of my work. It is so vital to be a part of a community that “stirs up” our faith and encourages us to be thankful, to be accountable to a community that pushes us to develop more fully in the Grace that we have been given. 🌿 We need people around us daily who are more concerned about our insides than what we look like from without. Deep fellowship, meaningful prayer, true belief and spiritual perspective. I got a new #cookbook today. I saw it in an overpriced thrift shop and ordered it cheaper online. This is one of those books that I’m going to read from cover to cover like a novel. #newblogpost A few nights ago I attended an event that ran really late and when I finally got home the house was dark and still. I began to put my things away before heading upstairs when something caught my eye. My youngest son, who is almost twelve, was up and waiting for me while the rest of the house slept. He was dressed in his favorite camo PJ’s and hiding in the corner of our living room, waiting with excitement for our eyes to meet. He grinned from ear to ear when they finally did. I know this boy. I felt the hand of God knitting him together long before he was introduced to the rest of the world. I know his weaknesses and his strengths. I know what hurts him and what makes him laugh. We settled in to pray, four parts becoming one voice, the way that each member expresses trust becomes uniquely inspired. - To hear our children pray is such an intimate way to know their hearts. When they speak they allow us to hear the way they see God, life, joy and pain. - As my youngest son began to pray he was reminded of a story in the book that he has been reading. He remembered that the main character in his book, as powerful as he was, had a great weakness. - He was not in control of his life. All of his power was contained in a stick that is burned on one end. Whatever happened to that stick determined what would happen to him. - I heard his recognition of Gods sovereignty and control. My son was recognizing that our lives are in Gods hands... that He is a good God and His plans are perfect. When we are laying down the really hard things in life we have to hold onto that Truth. - Brooks prayed, “Our lives are up to you God and it’s your choice what you do. #newblogpost My alarm clock went off with a loud buzz… I count the seconds before I react one…two…three. It shocks me every morning even though I should be used to it by now. I quickly reach across the right side of my body and push the snooze button and when I get my bearings, I turn it completely off and climb out of bed. It is really dark and there is not a single shred of light anywhere in the room. I can’t find my shoes so I turn on the bedside lamp for just a single second to peek down at the floor. I turn it off quickly so that I do not wake my sleeping husband. There is a deep chill in this old farmhouse built in the early 1900’s and made of iron ore rock stacked two stories tall. Overnight the temperature dropped and the air in the house dropped with it. Be still and know that I am God. ~ Psalm 46:10 At the break of dawn, before the sun rises, there is a rose-pink color in the sky. It spreads out wide the hope of something understood... the sun is coming. The dawn announces its entrance, it ushers in its arrival. Deep breath. I can trust Him. I have been restless. My mind has been tangled up and I have spent too much time tracing the lines back and forth, for weeks, desperate to find the ends in hope that something might begin to make sense. Yesterday I noticed a small block of wood with the words of Psalm 46:10 painted on it. It had been sitting on my counter for over a year, dismissed. Be still and know that I am God. It will happen again this morning. The rose-pink announcement across the sky. A reminder of His sovereignty and His very present help in trouble. I have missed this assurance as I have been consumed with outlining my problems. I may not know the ins and outs of my circumstance right now, but I can know God. I can trust Him with every tangled part of me. I can be still - I can stop tracing as I lift my eyes and settle my gaze on Him. Stability lies in how steady the subject of my gaze is. He is the only thing completely secure in my life. After it rains the grass puffs up and stands tall towards the sky with deep green praise. Flowers come alive with rich, vibrant color communicating satisfaction with their Creator and Sustainer. Everything looks plumper, a picture of health, after the rain falls on the earth. Rain is a blessing in nature because there is always a dependent thirst. The sky turns dark and the thunder sounds a deep rumble. I can imagine the anticipation in the trees, the excitement of the wildlife. Reverence. It begins slow, like a dripping faucet.
