one important fact about deserted island Shane is that he gets rescued by the Disney Cruise company scouting out a private island for their new cruise destination. They try and invite him back to the island three years later for a luxury vacation and he Respectfully Declines
This does mean that the first thing he eats in 18 months, other than fish, crabs, and coconuts, is a waffle in the shape of Mickey mouse.
The fun thing about the deserted island survival fic is that it's actually a Survival story for both of them. Shane is trying not to die from starvation, exposure, and scurvy, and Ilya is beating away the suicidal thoughts with a stick made of pure spite
Notably, I'm planning on setting this during Ilya's first year with the centaurs, so he truly picked up his entire life and moved away from his support system to be with his boyfriend...only for his boyfriend to immediately go and "die" on him. It's really rude of Shane, honestly

I could SO imagine an au where Ilya thinks Shane is playing like some 4D level mind fuck game with him when he comes over to shake his hand (twice) and compliment his playing, so instead of doing his cocky asshole schtick he earnestly takes the compliment and returns it in kind. And then Ilya goes in for the kill, expecting to call Shane's nice guy bluff by asking for his number. Ha. Bet you weren't expecting THAT, Hollander.
But then Hollander seems,,, weirdly pleased?? And,,, actually complies?? Before practically skipping off, like he got what he wanted?? What??
And then they're texting back and forth and Ilya still partly thinks this is some kind of long con, but then it's been weeks and then it's been longer and suddenly they're at the draft and Shane is looking around the room and when he spots Ilya his entire face lights up and he's making a beeline for Ilya and he's still smiling as he says "Ilya!" like he's happy to see him,,, because he IS happy to see him. Because they've been messaging basically constantly for months now and oh fuck oh shit Ilya is so so deeply screwed.
And so, instead of their canon rivals-with-benefits arrangement, we get the ten year slow burn best friends to lovers narrative.

#ok but we did know this#recaptcha was explicitly invented for crowdsourcing fixes for OCR errors#and it was a really good idea at the time because the ocr algos were way less accurate#none of this was secret#arguably recaptcha launched a whole line of crowdsourcing work in ML fields it was an important and well documented technique#obviously the end result isn't great!#but again none of this was secret. they told you if you ever clicked on info about the captcha Yeah this has been public knowledge for almost 20 years. I don't think I really buy the labor argument either-- I think two seconds of identification work is a reasonable price to access an otherwise free website, and a price I'm WAY more willing to pay than displaying ads. There ARE machine learning projects worth doing and I would argue that OCR and, yes, vehicular computer vision are among them. And as pointed out in the above tags, information on what the recaptcha was doing was available to any given user.
Captchas that didn't do anything BESIDES spam filtering predate recaptchas, and we'd still be spending that time on them if recaptcha hadn't been invented. The whole idea was that we might as well be doing something useful with it.

I think at some point Ilya’s therapist gets concerned by what seems to be a codependent and anxious attachment btw Ilya and Shane. When Shane the Doer hears about it, For the sake of his husband’s mental health’s improvement and the preservation of a healthy marriage, he convinces Ilya to try installing boundaries and do activities separately. It lasts a week before Ilya comes home sobbing from a video game session with Troy communicating that if they keep this boundary thing up he’ll need to switch his meds’ dosage because he’s miserable. Shane jumps from the couch he’s been sitting on for 40minutes because he was supposed to eat diner with rose but he kept wanting to make jokes and look at ilya to see him laugh but he wasn’t there and it SUCKED OMG and Shane starts sobbing too because if they keep this up he will have to get on his own meds and let’s never do this again I hate it when I can’t smell you near me

working on the shane doe fic and i've decided that baby shane only laughed one (1) time before he was kidnapped. yuna has spent her entire life trying to remember exactly what it sounded like. the first time shane laughs after the reunion, she bursts into tears.

So I'm maybe just a liiiiiiittle obsessive, and I wanted to work out the timeline of the show, and figured I'd share it with you all. I can't quite figure out how to format this for tumblr, so I'm going to just c&p images of the tables and then dump all of it in unformatted text I guess under a read more? Canon to me: Shane, before important games--the games that determine playoff spots, the games that knock a crucial division rival out of the reckoning, Game 7 of a brutal playoff series, the conference final, all three Cup finals--going through his pre game rituals, psyching himself up, settling into his headspace, reaching for that ice-cold calm inside himself, standing in the tunnel waiting to feel the bite of his skates on the ice... In those moments, the last thing he says to himself, the last voice in his head, is "Shane Hollander... will you disappoint them?"
And Shane, soft and barely a breath, will whisper, "Nope." And then he goes out onto the ice.
