Production Techniques: Tips for Aspiring Songwriters
Hello, lieblings! I’m back with another issue of “Production Techniques.” In, oh, August of last year or so, I posted about the basic structure of a song, and it got a lot of attention. It was essentially teaching people how pop songs, or songs in musical theater with a pop sound, are structured, a sort of rough template for how to write one of those. But then it occurred to me that the people who read that column might have been aspiring songwriters themselves. Given my standing in the industry, such as it is being in the fringes at the moment, I felt I could offer some more (sometimes practical) advice in regards to practicing the craft. Note that I am not a songwriter myself, but most experienced songwriters agree that this is the way to go.

Road Trip: Tips for the First-Time Touring Performer (Part 1 of 3)
Even after making it on Broadway, few actors can sustain a successful career by only working in New York City. Life on the road has become an unavoidable necessity for many Broadway performers. For some, performing on a Broadway national tour is preferable to performing on Broadway. There is more money to be made, in every town you are treated like a rock star, you get to see the country, and you are free from the everyday responsibilities and challenges that come with living in New York City. However, the road also places strain on an actor’s personal life and romantic relationships. Many performers simply lose their grip on reality.
In order to avoid you losing your grip, I’ve collected this set of stories (some of which are excerpted, under Fair Use doctrine, from Making It on Broadway: Actors’ Tales of Climbing to the Top, by Jodie Langel and David Wienir) from so-called “road warriors,” along with practical advice about what to pack, how to cope with the situations that may arise on the road, what to do with your money, and more!

In the first part, we covered some of the basic day-to-day stuff, like what and how to pack, and doing your laundry on a touring schedule. Now we get down to the nitty-gritty. The brass tacks. In Part 2, which follows the jump, we’re gonna talk about money and how to save it, and how to keep from getting bored and slipping into dicey habits.

Now, after the jump, we cover perhaps the thinnest ice in the lake. Emotion is defined as “agitation or disturbance of mind; vehement or excited mental state.” And, as The Rocky Horror Picture Show pointed out, it is also a cruel and irrational master. Life on the road with the same group of people every day can take an emotional and psychological toll. Cliques, friendships, and even the dreaded “showmance” will all have their part to perform. But since I know what you randy young first-timers really want to hear about, I’ll get through the clique and friendship stuff as quickly and as generally as I can. Love is the kind of minefield that deserves as much attention as it can get.

““I am a tragedy, Bound by this role I play the lead. Could You write a new ending? Tear out these pages, Rewrite this story.””
— - Philmont (Letter to the Editor)
“You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.” - Rene Dumal
This quote has stuck with me ever since my ranger told me when we were hiking through a tough part of the trek. I think about it near daily..
“Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt”
— A T-shirt hanging in the philmont dining hall
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. -Edward Abbey
So I’m taking a chance and applying for the backcountry scares me the most, for a lot of reasons. But that’s what Philmont is about isn’t it? Taking a chance, and growing from it.
