this might rub some people the wrong way but oh well... fanfics about cregan stark marrying a green and being team green are such a character assassination, it shows that some people have no idea who cregan really is. he was one of the main commanders of the blacks, after rhaenyra died he fought hard to get justice to her, to the point where he marched to king's landing with a huge army to get aegon ii out of the iron throne. he was deeply loyal to rhaenyra because his father made an oath and starks never break an oath, so he would die before joining team green, no matter the circumstances
i’m sorry if this comes off wrong but what happened to if you do not like it just move on its just a fanfic. ssems kind of weird to shame fanfic writers like this who do make him tg and claiming they do not understand him. a fanfic does not have to comply to a characters canon personality some can change or it can be an AU situation
But if you don't like a character's personality then what do you like about him? If you don't agree with his personality, then why write about him, especifically? It seems odd. It is one thing to write a modern AU in which the character has the same personality in a different setting, it is another to change his personality. It's like a fanfic where Aemond is a good guy. He is not! He is selfish, arrogant with major self esteem issues. If you take it that away from him, he becomes someone else. Like I said you can think that the actor is hot but if that is all you like about him, you might as well write an OC x OC. And to emphasize, Cregan is no random supporter, he is one of their COMMANDERS, he is one the frontlines in Rhaenyra's name, raising HER banner because he is honorable and loyal and he honors the oath made to her past the end.
It’s not odd. It has always been done in fanfics. Its OOC. people like certain things about character or want to use the character for practise writing same with AUs or just love the actor
you can emphasise about Cregan but it does not change the fact you can simply not read those type of fanfics. No one is forcing you too just let people enjoy the fanfics they want to read and write
But if you just love the actor, you can create a new character based on him. For example, Tom Taylor is a natural golden blond, which would make him a perfect fit for House Lannister (same for Tom Glynn Carney and Ewan Mitchell) and you create something original, that fits what you want. Plus fanfics were created by the Star Trek fandom for basically Spirk and other ships, also to explore different minor characters and planets. I say "created" because they were closer to the coined term in the timeline but by definition we can trace it back to Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, in the 14th to 15th century, maybe even earlier than that and they did not include the alteration of existing characters. No, it did not always exist in fanfic and I am sorry but butchering a character is not a good way to do so. It is a lack of respect for the hard work another author had creating that character.
And some people do make new characters with their favourite actors but some prefer to keep the original character the actor played and change the personality like I said previously some use it as writing practise.
If butchering a character is a lack of respect towards the author then would any and all fanfic not be disrespect? It changes what the author originally wrote about the storyline and its characters but I doubt George RR Martin lies awake at night because someone wrote a niche little fanfic where in some alternate universe Cregan Stark would be on the Greens side because he married Alicent’s daughter.
Let people explore their creativity by making these fanfics. As long as they are not profiting from it I doubt anyone who worked on the original would lie awake at night.
If you do not like it do not read it
