“Comfort Character” and it’s a character who brings discomfort to everyone they interact with
im ngl ive had the thought when jervis get put into his arkham cell hes across from joker or something and jervis is like "i dont want to go among mad people" and joker responds with the "were all mad here" (and 100% joker doesnt even know who jervis even is yet so he doesnt know that was just the wrong thing to say) and jervis just fully Breaks Down, laughing hysterically at the bitter irony of it all and joker is either like "Oh sweet, hes already crazy! >:D" or hes like "...well if i knew itd be that easy id have saved that for later"
Ack! This ask was too good to pass up… what a lovely idea :D!
how tf is there not some sort of 'caine is the circus' or 'the circus is caine's body' tag on ao3, i thought folks would be getting all sorts of mileage out of that kind of thing! i mean canonically, "This is his world, one he created out of nothing, so naturally, he has control over everything." no one else took that line and started thinking up complicated metaphors for the body as a location or the environment as a sensory organ or anything?
maybe ART from the murderbot diaries spoiled me for this kind of thing but i really though it'd be more popular, this is the only one i could find that comes close. other people do fun stuff w caine's avatar, especially with gender, and that's all fantastic, but i want to talk about this man as the digital version of a mycelial network running through the world he's created.
does anybody know how to get out of bed. or be a better person
wow
nostalgia bait is much less effective when you have memory problems. "hey its that thing from your childhood, don't you love thing from your childhood?" i wouldnt know </3 i forgor.
Having a traumatic childhood means you cannot talk even objectively about your basic foundational experiences without it being "venting", even if you're not actually venting. You just straight up have a huge chunk of your life you can't talk about, full stop, without it being trauma dumping.
And it not being socially acceptable to talk about your own childhood is super alienating. Sometimes people want to know why, and any answer you can give them is going to be off putting.
It's to the point I get irritated when something I said is framed as venting when I'm literally just talking about my life experiences, doing my best to keep emotion out of it.
when I was in high school, I overheard two older students talking about a friend of theirs.
One of them said something like, "it doesn't bother me that [Friend] was in residential mental health treatment, I just wish they wouldn't talk about it ALL the time".
The other replied, "Well, that was all of last year for them. So when they say 'when I was in treatment,' it's like when you say 'last year'."
I try to remember that any time someone says something that sounds Shocking to me. sometimes one person's scary special crisis is another person's last year.
If you want to be accepting of mental illness, you need to accept the fact that some people's everyday lives are going to be terrifying to you. That doesn't mean they don't get to talk about it. Stop forcing hurt, isolated people to become even MORE hurt and isolated because you can't fathom toughening up a bit.
So if Caine and Kinger finally have a father-son relationship… does that mean Kinger calls him by his first name, all three middle names, and last name when he’s about to unleash the full force of his parental wrath
A cuppa
Yk people have talked about how names are in dc sometimes (the most infamous being Edward Nygma and Harleen Quinzel) but i never see anyone talk about jervis’s name bc gang.
TETCH ISNT A REAL LAST NAME LOL
but Tetchy and Tetched are real words, and yall wanna know what they mean?
…sounds about right 😅
And this is a little more of a stretch but the name Jervis can be said to mean Spear, and what is the definition of being spearheaded?
And well. He IS the mind control guy 👀
I just thought it was interesting :]
Rogues and research papers
Saw a post by doxxed0367 about how Jervis Tetch/ the Mad Hatter had been researching the brain for years and probably published research papers
And this couldn't leave my mind :
A lot of the Rogues have diplomas that require research and as someone who's currently in a master's degree, it made me laugh because I was imagining being a student there and having to avoid to quote that one person because they became a rogue.
Because as someone's who's done a bit of research, I've noticed patterns such as :
1- the person did a fundamental discovery which led to them being quoted often BUT their moral actions do not matter because they're fundamental anyway and cannot be avoided in the construction of the field or of your research.
2- the work wasn't fundamentally new, it was just a rework or linked to topics not previously discussed.
In the case that the person is morally okay, then, yes it will be discussed. If it's not the case, well, there's a chance people will find the work replaceable.
3- the person and their works are bad and best avoided. By ''bad'' here i specifically mean that it was either conceived poorly and could be taken as problematic or that the work is problematic in itself due to the ideas conveyed.
(for instance, last year I've worked on reinterpretations of Alice in Wonderland and some papers I came across were clearly racist when talking about non-Europeans adaptations)
4- Someone can genuinely choose to work on someone else's work because they like their ideas, and possibly them, if there's known information about the author's life.
5- There's a consensus that this person is/was bad and most of the time their theories are used it's to dismantle them.
Anyway, just imagine being a student in Gotham and having to quote one of the rogues because their work falls under these umbrellas. I think the worst would be 4 or 5 since
4- means that you have to admit that you like the rogue and their ideas and possibly make you seem as dangerous
5- doing your thesis or work that way could get you killed by said rogue.
Just imagine being in science where you probably have to read and maybe quote Dr Pamela Isley if anything you're doing is related to plants, Harleen Quinzel and, way worse, Jonathan Crane, for psychiatry and Jervis Tetch for neuroscience. And that's just a few.
(also imagine doing your work on the rogues or what they've done. And thinking you're dead at any moment because of what you said. I also feel like some would congratulate you for using their research too)
(I'm also pretty sure the rogues are a constant source of academic research in Gotham and in this version of America in general. Maybe even in the world ? )
genuinely the best shot in the show holy shit
WHOSE BLORBO'S DEAD NOW
This is for all the people who laughed at us Caine fans after Episode 8
How are you supposed to write when you realise that you pour your entire heart out in your fics ? That they are a way to cope with things as insignificant as the end of one of your favourite show and as significant as repressed grief (and probably depression) ?
At the same time I love writing fics because it let it out, and because I finally have the content that I crave and I just write for myself.
But on the other hand, I still remember my teachers telling me I could turn out to be a successful writer if I tried it, and I remember stopping writing because of a lack of time.
I am starting to write again, but it's so hard to not be judgemental over yourself when you know you've done so much better when you were younger.
And again, I pour my heart out in some fics and realise I've been using them to cope with life and it hurts me. But I wouldn't regret writing them. It's so infuriating.

MY DREAM COME TRUE this is the best day ever💯💯💯
Thinking about the significance of "Isn't She Lovely?" in TADC
Because no.
Jax wasn't lovely. Jax was awful, cruel and pushed everyone away, and never took a single chance given.
He wasn't lovely.
But she could have been.
Oh Jax. If you just accepted yourself and the people around you sooner, she could've have been lovely. You would've been happier with yourself and the world around you. If you loved yourself for who you were, you probably would've hurt less people.
But you let her exist far too late. It took someone personally traveling through your torment to the point you couldn't hide anything anymore, to let her breathe.
The moment you admitted "I don't want to go" when the entire rest of the series you were begging to fade away, you admitted you wanted to keep living as her. That's why the song started at that moment. She was born far too late.
At least she lives somewhere, out there. Drinking at Riley's bar with some friends.
Still thinking about Jax in The Last Act since seeing it two days ago.
To me, her story is meant as a sort of cautionary tale about transness, and especially about staying in the closet for too long when you know that you're trans. It also relies heavily on the dilemn that many trans people face which is between being their true self (but risking being abandoned) or staying stuck into the perception that the others have of you (''I'm the funny one'').
As a trans person who's currently unable to transition, I need you to know that sometimes there's comfort with being stuck in such a position. Sure, there's even greater amounts of discomfort, but having to face people just to defend yourself everyday is hard and tiring, and knowing that telling people that you are trans could make you in life-threatening danger is even worse.
From what I've seen, that's mostly why some people choose to detransition. To not lose their loved ones, to stop the peer pressure from growing, for their safety... and that's also the main reason so many people have to wait to transition.
But on the other hand, not transitionning while knowing that you're trans makes you bitter. Sure, it doesn't not justify outright hate or malice towards others and yes, Jax was a problematic character whose transness do not absolve all that she's done, but it can explain some things about her.
I also think that this bitterness of not being able to be the person you want to, that you know you are deep inside mixed with the regret of not being able to transition and being able to live your life like you wants eats you in the end, and i think that abstraction is a perfect metaphor for that as, from what I get, it's more like depression than death.
