Add Some Oomph to Your Spells with Magical Timing
Like herbs, oils, and crystals, you don’t need to work with magical timing for your spell to be successful. You can cast a spell at any time, no matter your intention, and get your desired results. However, working with the energy of the sun, moon, and days of the week can add an extra power boost to your magic.
Think of it this way: certain energies are dominant at certain times. Those energies are easier to connect with because they are closer at hand, so to speak, so you can bring them into your life and your spells more easily and in a more powerful way. That doesn’t mean you can’t call on other energies during these times — it just means that you may not connect to them quite so easily.
If you choose to work with magical timing in your spells, there are several yearly, monthly, weekly, and even daily cycles you can align your spells with.
The Cycle of the Sun: Solstices and Equinoxes
These are the turning points that mark the solar year, and are associated with the relationships between day and night, light and dark, summer and winter. Each solstice or equinox marks the end of one season and the beginning for the next. Because they are so rare and so potent, these days are a great time for your “big picture” spells or for spells that need a big power boost.
Winter Solstice. The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, and falls between December 20 and December 23, depending on the year. In some pagan traditions the winter solstice, or Yule, marks the beginning of the new year — you may choose to set intentions for the coming year on this solstice. After the winter solstice, the nights start getting shorter and the days start getting longer — so spells related to healing and bringing things into the light are especially effective at this time of year. The winter solstice marks the end of the “dark half” of the year and beginning of the “light half” of the year; at this point, our focus turns from inward reflection to outward manifestation. You may choose to think of the time between the winter solstice and spring equinox as a “planning phase,” where you examine yourself and your desires, decide what you want to work on in the next year, and make plans for manifesting what you want.
Spring Equinox. An equinox occurs when the day and the night are exactly the same length, representing a perfect balance between light and dark. The spring equinox marks the beginning of spring and occurs between March 19 and March 22. The Christian holiday of Easter and the pagan holiday of Ostara are both related to the energy of this equinox. At this time of year, the natural world is coming back to life as winter begins to fade. Plants are beginning to grow, and baby animals are being born. This is a powerful time of year for fertility magic and any magic related to new beginnings. You may choose to think of the time between the spring equinox and the summer solstice as a “planting phase,” where you “plant the seed” of the things you want to manifest and begin doing the work to make it happen.
Summer Solstice. This solstice marks the longest day and shortest night of the year. It occurs between June 19 and June 23. As I am writing this post, we are coming up on the summer solstice (June 20, 2020). Life, fertility, and growth are at their peak during this time of year, which makes this solstice a perfect time for big manifestation spells. At the same time, this marks the end of the “light half” and beginning of the “dark half” of the year, so after the summer solstice our energy shifts from outward manifestation to inward contemplation. You may choose to think of the time between the summer solstice and fall equinox as the “harvest phase,” where you reap the results of your hard work and manifest your desires in the physical world.
Autumn Equinox. This is the other time of year when the day and night are perfectly balanced. The autumn equinox occurs between September 19 and September 23 and marks the beginning of autumn. This is traditionally the time of year when crops are harvested, and many pagan groups celebrate harvest festivals around this time. Nature is beginning to die or go into hibernation in preparation for the coming winter. This is an especially powerful time of year for shadow work or for magic related to endings and transitions. You may choose to think of the time between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice as the “reflection phase,” when you retreat from the outside world to rest, focus on yourself, and do your inner work and self-healing.
Important Note: This post lists dates for the solstices and equinoxes in the Northern hemisphere. In the Southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed. If you live in the Southern hemisphere, you would observe the winter solstice in June, the spring equinox in September, the summer solstice in December, and the fall equinox in March.
The Cycle of the Moon: Lunar Phases
If you don’t have time to wait for the appropriate solstice or equinox, you can still connect with the cosmos in your magic. One of the biggest pros of the lunar cycle is that it happens roughly every month — so you never have to wait very long for the next full moon. The moon is also associated with magic and spirituality in several traditions, which makes it an especially powerful astral ally for witches.
New Moon. The new moon is when the moon is completely invisible in the night sky, and is the phase opposite the full moon. The new moon is a powerful time for shadow work (because it deals with things that are hidden) and for magic related to new beginnings.
Waxing Moon. The moon is waxing when it appears to be growing in the night sky; this is the phase between the new moon and full moon. This is a powerful time for any magic that deals with drawing something in, building something up, or strengthening something that already exists.
Full Moon. Many witches believe that the full moon is the most powerful time of month for any kind of magic. This is a good time to cast any spell that needs a serious power boost. The full moon is also an especially powerful time to release what no longer serves you or to work healing magic.
Waning Moon. The moon is waning when it appears to be shrinking in the night sky; this is the phase between the full moon and new moon. This is a powerful time for any magic that deals with sending something away, banishing negative energy, or bringing something to an end.
Dark Moon. The dark moon is the three day period immediately before the new moon. In some traditions, it is believed to be bad luck to cast spells during the dark moon. Other traditions hold that the dark moon is the best point in the lunar cycle for destructive magic, such as curses and hexes. Many modern witches don’t recognize the dark moon as a separate moon phase at all. I personally like to use the dark moon as a time for self reflection, and may focus on shadow work during this time.
Magical Correspondences for the Days of the Week
The days of the week also have their own unique magical energies, and each day is linked to a certain planet and to certain deities.
Sunday. Sunday is, of course, connected to the Sun and solar deities. Sunday is the best day of the week for any manifestation magic that needs an extra boost. Its energy is also associated with healing, personal growth, power, and success.
Monday. Monday is associated with the Moon and lunar deities. Monday is a quiet, introspective day, and can feel very ethereal. It’s the best day for magic related to intuition, nurturing, and shadow work.
Tuesday. Tuesday is associated with Mars and with gods and goddesses of war and action. (It is named for the Norse/Germanic god Tyr/Tiw.) Tuesday is a very “active” day, and is good for magic related to action, activism, victory, or finding courage.
Wednesday. Wednesday is associated with Mercury and with gods and goddesses of wisdom, learning, and communication. (It is named for the Norse/Germanic god Odin/Wodan.) Wednesday is all about mental activity. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to thought, travel, communication (written, spoken, or digital), and learning/study.
Thursday. Thursday is associated with Jupiter and with gods and goddesses of prosperity, wealth, and protection. (It is named after the Norse/Germanic god Thor.) Thursday, like Jupiter in astrology, is all about outward expansion. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to career, prosperity, and wealth.
Friday. Friday is associated with Venus and with gods and goddesses of love, fertility, and sensuality. (It is named after the Norse goddess Freyja, or perhaps the goddess Frigg.) The energy of Friday is fun, lighthearted, and sexy. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to love, beauty, and sex/sexuality.
Saturday. Saturday is associated with Saturn and with time and wisdom. (The day and the planet are both named after the Roman god Saturn.) Saturday is practical and wise, but it does have a little bit of a dark side. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to banishing and protection.
Magical Times of Day
Okay, so you’d like to start working with magical timing, but what about emergency magic and last-minute spells? What if you don’t have time to wait for the next full moon, or even the next Sunday? You can still align your spell with magical timing! There are several moments of power each day, and each has its own magical associations.
Sunrise. Sunrise is, of course, the birth of the new day. This makes it the perfect time for spells related to new beginnings or expanded possibilities.
Noon. This is the peak or high point of the day. This is a powerful time for healing magic.
Sunset. Sunset is the end of the day, and forms a gateway between light and dark. This is a great time for spells related to accepting endings, releasing that which does not serve, and moving on from the past.
Midnight. If noon is the peak of the day, then midnight is the peak of the night. Midnight has a very ethereal, transformational energy. Like with the full moon, some witches believe that any spell will be more powerful if cast at midnight. This is a powerful time for both banishing and attraction magic.

Whites trynna practice hoodoo is so…? Why are you praying to the deceased ancestors of African American people who died under white supremacy, which you benefit from? You really feel entitled to the service of black folks, even in death?
hey fellow white magic workers/witches/pagans/polytheists, we should all be reblogging this.
I responded to this earlier but I misread African Americans for native Americans. my stance still stands that as long as your being respectful to that faith, you should be able to practice as you please. Religions or practice knows no skin color or race. You don’t have to be Scandinavian to be odinist, you don’t have to be Indian to practice Hinduism, just like you don’t have to be wiccan to be a witch. People don’t also realize that here↓ In the United States of America, slavery was already on the way out and the south was prepared to get rid of it. I could go into it but knowing that most people either don’t care or want to hear facts contrary from what they learned in school, I refrain. So in conclusion as long as your being respectful, there is nothing wrong with it. Because no one choice their race, therefore no one should be ashamed of it.
Actually hoodoo does see color our spirits and ancestors are not friendly with non black practitioners. Hell they can be violent towards us if we really fuck up so what makes you think they’ll be kind to you. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again this is a closed religion for a reason. Not only because it IS a black only religion but for people’s safety. People have lost their minds dealing with some deities. But I mean in all honesty if y'all are so hell bent on trying to steal and claim a religion you have no business in I truly hope you get everything the spirits and ancestors give you.
If these dumbasses really want to fuck around with hoodoo let them. They’ll get exactly what the fuck they deserve.
EVEN THE ACTUAL WHITE SPIRIT PRACTITIONERS IN THE NOTES ARE TELLING Y’ALL NOT TO DO THIS AND YOU’RE INSISTING ON BEING WHITE AND DUMB SO IF MY ANCESTORS RISE UP AND BUST Y’ALL IN THE ASS ALL I’M GONNA DO IS LAUGH HARDER
I also have to come in from the Asetru side of things to point out that over 90% of people who call themselves Odinists do think you have to be Scandinavian.
It’s a red flag for white supremacy.
Which may well say something about the person using that term.
It always kills me when these white people go “as long as you’re respectful” but by appropriating this closed religion you are inherently being disrespectful. See, it’s a recurrent problem amongst white practitioners that they have this entitled mindset and they tell themselves that as long as they aren’t being *overtly* racist by saying slurs or tying nooses, then they are free to do whatever. But being truly respectful means keeping your hands off closed religions especially black/African ones.
I’ve had so many ~uwu blessed be peace and love~ white witches get angry and violently so on this post which is exactly what I’m talking about. White witches and practitioners aren’t any different from white Christians with that fucking colonizer mindset. The second you heard “No”, y'all were trying to tell a black person they were stupid and wrong and the “real racist”
Things to Consider in a Tarot Reading (Other Than Card Meanings)
It’s important to look at the meanings of tarot cards, but it’s very possible to pull even more out of a reading that individual card meanings. Here’s some other stuff you might consider bringing into your interpretation when it feels right:
🍄The position of the cards. This is why spread design can be so important! I’ve had instances where all the cards, in their positions, had the subjects looking or pointing towards one specific card. It was wild. What did it mean? Maybe nothing, but maybe something very significant, depending on the question!
🍄The visual element of the cards. Sometimes what’s depicted on the card can give more specific insight than the actual book meanings. The pictures were done that way for a reason, so don’t be afraid to give them their own weight! Also, sometimes the spread as a whole will have a flow of design (like when one half is much brighter than the other) or a specific card is WAY more colorful than the other cards on the table. Any of these could potentially carry meaning.
🍄Jumper cards. This is when a card pops out while you’re shuffling! I usually just put them back… UNLESS the question has already been presented, and I’m shuffling with that question in mind. Then, I keep them as extra advice, bonus cards.
🍄Reoccurring numbers. Maybe you do a four card spread for a friend, and you get the four of cups, four of swords, four of wands, and the Emperor! (IV.) What does that mean? What does the number four symbolize? Well, a lot of things, potentially, depending on what you study. Some tarot designs incorporate the Kabbalah’s numbered paths in the tree of life, others go with numerology. Maybe, the number four just means something special to you or the querent in particular.
🍄A bunch of cards in order. I’m not talking about when you forget to shuffle. I’m talking about when you give it a really good shuffle and you still get the ace, two, and three of Pentacles all in a row. This can be seen as a sign of progression, or that the events are all much more closely connected than anticipated. It can also mean it happens over a shorter period of time than normal. It’s up to you, your cards, and the contexts.
🍄Proportions of different features. Maybe you’re doing an obstacle spread, and your obstacle is something like the nine of swords. That’s pretty nasty, but if all the other cards in the spread are Major Arcana, then it’s probably not going to be that difficult to surmount. The reverse can also be true. Additionally, a high number of reversed cards in a spread typically signifies a lot of confusion, conflict, and turmoil.
🍄Reoccurring symbols. Beyond just the four suits, because that’s a given! But maybe your spread shows a lot of cards with images of fire, people dancing, or birds. Do these mean anything to you or the querent? What do they typically symbolize?
🍄Any hiccups or unusual events during the reading. Once I had a querent pick up a card to examine it, drop it, then pick it up and put it back reversed. Since it was the overall outcome card, I interpreted that as a heightened ability to change her own fate in this given situation, since she had turned the card from quite a bad omen to a good one. Sometimes little accidents like dropping cards, accidentally shifting them, or laying out the spread wrong are meant to be there and add to the meaning!
I hope this gives you some ideas! Feel free to add more. What do you interpret alongside the cards in a reading?
I love this! I would add:
🌻 Skipped cards: what I mean here is when you get cards in order like listed above, but something is missing. In a spread I recently did, I got the 3 of Swords right next to the 5 of Swords, and the images of my particular deck really drive home the fact that the energy of the 4 of Swords (rest, recuperation, peace) were missing from my current situation even though I was fighting so hard for it. Look for cards that show up in order but skip over a card!

I understood at a very early age that in Nature I felt everything I should feel in church but never did. Walking in the woods, I felt in touch with the universe and with the spirit of the universe. To me, being spiritual means whispering to trees, laughing with flowers, falling in love with sunrises and sunsets, worshipping the stars. One hand to my heart, one hand to the Earth. And sparkles. Tons of them🌱
Summer Ritual Cookies
So I made these for the first time for my Beltane Feast, and they ended up a wonderfully yummy addition. With the fire-associated cinnamon and the warmth of honey, maple, and vanilla, these cookies work well for any summer ritual or gathering. Use them as offerings or to share with friends.
Ingredients
¼ cup unsalted butter, softened*
¼ cup coconut oil, melted
½ cup maple syrup, room temperature
¼ cup honey**
4 large eggs, room temperature***
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup coconut flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons cinnamon
3 tablespoons sugar
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray baking sheet with cooking spray or line with parchment paper.
Beat together butter, coconut oil, maple syrup, and honey until smooth.
Add eggs and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.Slowly add coconut flour and salt. Mix until combined.
In a separate bowl, mix cinnamon and sugar. Use batter to create little balls and roll them in the sugar mixture. Place on pan, flattening slightly with a spoon.
Bake for about 13 minutes.
Transfer from pan and chill in fridge until ready to serve.
Notes
**To make vegan, swap for agave syrup or just use ¼ cup more maple syrup instead.
***I haven’t baked a vegan version of this recipe yet. You can use aquafaba (3 tablespoons for each egg), but I’m not sure how it will affect the taste or texture.
You can serve these warm, but I found that the texture was slightly better after being chilled. You can also drizzle a little maple syrup on top for an extra bit of sweet.
Nonverbal Witchcraft
For my witches who cannot speak, struggle to speak, or choose to remain quiet.
This post is a compilation of ideas and personal methods from fellow nonverbal witches. Not everything may fit for you, but hopefully it will give you a starting point!
Spells:
Write the words and focus your energy on bringing them into being. You could burn the piece of paper to finish off the spell. One contributor also mentions burying the paper.
Our thoughts are powerful. Focus, and say the words in your mind.
You can also mouth the words without speaking them, if that helps you.
Whispering is also great if that works for you!
Find power in silence, use it as its own tool.
Use instruments to create certain rhythms for different spells, instead of chanting.
If sound is helpful, play music that you feel relates/connects you to the spell.
Cast circles and finalize spells by snapping.
Sigils are concentrated intention–use that to your advantage. They can absolutely be a base for spellwork.
Use a power source; the elements (candles, soil, the air around you, a bowl of water, etc.), crystals, burning herbs, etc.
To feel energy without using words to confirm: use tools that have stronger energy that you can physically feel.
Make spell candles, jars or sachets.
Use sign language! I’m of the opinion that everyone should at least learn the basics, and there are plenty of free resources out there!
Specific spells:
Casting a circle: “You can cast a circle by walking in a circle and visualizing your footsteps imprinting on the earth below, creating a barrier of light (color chosen to correspond to intention at the time), walk the circle 3 times and see the barrier in your mind forming a perfect sphere around your work space, becoming brighter and stronger each step you take.”*
To banish: write the things you wish to banish on a piece of paper, light them on fire with a black candle and place in a burn bowl.
To release and invite: use two pieces of paper. On one, write down everything you’d like to release from your life. On the other, write down everything you’d like to invite into your life. Burn the release paper and dispose of the ashes, keep the invite paper. (Optional: I like to do this on the new moon, and have a black candle above the release paper and a white candle above the invite paper).
Protective charm: (click here)
To raise you out of a dark place: (click here)
Spell of destruction: (click here)
Energy work:
Use a cajon, bells, singing bowl, steel tongue drum/moondrum, or other instruments to raise energy!
“I have a specific snapping rhythm that is ‘magic time’. When I snap the rhythm once or three times it’s go time and I fall into the zone.”*
“For energy work and to raise energy I dance and as my heartbeat gets louder in my ears I mentally chant with it, focusing on a short phrase, intention, or incantation with the energy I physically raised and the meditative repetition of my mind.”*
Use a power source; the elements, crystals, burning herbs, etc.
Most energy work involves movement, rather than words (click here for energy work with restricted movement).
Other ideas:
Worship: write letters, devote your actions, decorate an altar. Prayers don’t need to be spoken! Or write your prayers and place them on an altar, burn them, or keep them. (Bedridden worship)
Divination doesn’t require spoken word, especially once you have a bond with your tools. You can always use writing, sigils, or your thoughts to channel your intent/question. (Bedridden divination)
Charge crystals with your intent and wear them/carry them in a pouch.
Kitchen witchcraft, garden magic, tea magic, etc. etc.
Utilize the correspondences of the items in your life.

Say it alittle louder for the people in the back!
Planned parenthood has NO business saying happy Mother’s Day when their job is to take motherhood away from women with lies and manipulation.
Wrong. They're planned PARENTHOOD not planned abortion.
I was harassed by demonstrators screaming in my face last year when I went into a Planned Parenthood.
I go there because the healthcare providers there are the first non-judgmental gynecologists I've ever known, and they make me feel safe to ask questions, to say, "Hey is this normal?" I go there for my pap smears, for my breast exams, for my birth control. They're affordable - on my insurance I don't spend a dime to see them. At my last provider, I paid over a hundred bucks any time I wanted a depo shot, and I made far less money than I do now. Worked as a grocery store clerk and was still on my mom's good insurance, she was a nurse.
The woman who shouted in my face got quiet when I told her I was there to make sure I didn't have cancer. One of the many men who were there didn't hear me and continued to yell that I had options. That intimidation and rage against a woman's body shakes a person, and I shook with anxiety and anger both.
Why should my choice have to be to see someone who might charge me a lot of money, who might want to tell me "hey, you're in your early thirties now, maybe you should have kids before it's too late" when I don't know if I want them, when I am happy to adopt if my indecision does make it too late, when we may have trouble conceiving because of my partner's medication anyway, who might have refused to help me with an iud because I haven't had kids yet, who makes me so uncomfortable that maybe I skip my next exam, and that's the one that would have caught cancer early?
I made sure to thank every person in there for being there that day. It can't feel good to work with people calling you horrible things outside.

Learning A New Tarot Deck
I don't know if this might be helpful to other people, but this is how I learn my tarot decks:
I do a daily draw, and study the card, noting down my interpretation of it absent any research. I then check the companion book (or if I have misplaced it, the internet) and compare/fill in any gaps/note where and why I differ from it. I rarely forget what a card means after seeing it and analyzing it once, and it allows me to pace myself and grow more intimate with my cards.
Today's daily draw for May 13, unfiltered, so you can see my method (and also my self talk nonsense):
Card: Strength
Deck: Prisma Visions Tarot
Time: 8:28am
Phase: Last Quarter
Mood: Peaceful. I have discovered a spiritual commitment to taking care of my body to feed my mind and soul. Yoga was hard but good today, and showering was beautiful and I felt so much love.
Intuition:
What must I do or learn today? Strength. There is a field of male lions, but a pride rarely has more than one male. These look like alpha males potentially? They are roaring! Trapped in the grass and doing nothing but roaring - it's a little reminiscent of the more toxic elements of patriarchy. Also, lionesses hunt and do the work for the pride - there are no lionesses here.
And yet in the background looms a human, shadowed and dark and possibly naked. A lack of any phallic hint means that even if the figure isn't female, they have feminine energy. They tower over the male lions, who are so tiny to them as to be beneath notice. Indeed we don't see their face, while we see the faces of these lions.
Strength as a card in many different iterations makes me angry somehow, probably because it's so fucking REAL. This card is no different but makes me laugh in a way - all these manly men with masculine (read - toxic/traditional/racist) tendencies scream out from among the weeds, while the feminine energy above them is not ruled by them at all. Where I am angry, they simply exist, powerful and as they are.
Funny enough, the little companion book agrees with me but doesn't focus on the toxicity of the male lions, but rather says they are her strength and make her fearless (they use the gendered "she"). I reject that meaning for me, but I will keep it in mind for others.
(I don't hate men! To the contrary - I may be questioning and wondering if I like women, but that's in addition to liking men. My fiancé is a man - not a beast who wants to rule over others crying out from among other likeminded beasts.)

🌙 use old socks to make spell satchets! these are also great because theyve spent a lot of time with you, so the spell will have an enhanced effect :))
🌙 buy your herbs in bulk!!!!!!!!! never pay more than a dollar for a lil bag of herbs! buy huge bags of them, you wont regret this! i recently bought a huge container of cinnamon sticks, i absolutely love it.
